I noticed that there was a bit on the Fruits Basket page on Wikipedia about how there were no plans for a 2nd season.
Following the series release in North America by FUNimation, a grassroots effort has been mounted by the fan base to have a second season of the series produced in Japan. Funimation has had a sizable hand in this effort, organizing origami crane folding events at various anime conventions. These cranes were then sent to Japan as a form of petition for the production of a second season. At the beginning of 2006, however, Natsuki Takaya and Daichi Akitaro announced in two separate interviews that there will not be any more work on the anime for a number of reasons.[citation needed]

I noticed there were no sources cited about those interviews, which i comments on in the Discussion page. Well i'm trying to help otu since i started the ball rolling to see if i could find some source for those comments. The only interview i was able to find was one by the manga-ka Natsuki Takaya in Time, but it's mangs related with no refernce to the anime. Only other place i've had tiome to check today is the forusm over at Anime Suki but thats was adead end. Some people wre talking about comments confirming no second season as far backa s 2003 from both the director and Takaya-sensei but of course no links to sources. So i guess what i'm wondering is if anyone knows of any interviews where one of them confirms there will be no seocnd seaosn i would appreciate it. I'll pass it along to Wikipedia and make the updates. I actually hope it turns out to be just a bad change to the article because i still want to hope there's a chance for another season but i'm doubtful. Anyway, thanks for any help.

Confirmed? No, there would've been a big thread in R1 impossible to miss. Still possible? Perhaps, but we can only hope somebody like Lance is willing to offer some info because very little has been said about it in a long time.

Yup Fruits Basket and Berserk are the two shows this question keeps coming up. And everyone keeps hoping the next thread about it is offical. :horse:

Last that I heard was that Funimation was pushing pretty hard for this. While I like existing properties, I sometimes wish that they'd create new shows that are pretty good as well. I like certain series fanatically, but you can only have so much of say Hellsing before it gets stale. Full Metal Panic is in this time rut as they have tons of manga to still animate. Although there have been two other series since the original FMP.

Well I don't think that's so much the concern here, where you have a series that only had one season and didn't really "end" (same goes for the other example given, Berserk). I don't think we have to worry yet about having "so much" of Fruits Basket that it "gets stale".

To be honest, I can't think of many series that got brought back so many times that they've gotten stale. You could probably argue that many super long running series get stale, sure. But the trend for short seasons lately means that even if we're getting a third Nanoha, it still feels extremely new and fresh. Ditto on if we get a third rozen Maiden. It still seems to me like a lot of great original (to anime anyway) properties are getting animated every season. They certainly outnumber sequels to existing shows, anyway. I've definitely never gotten a feel that anime was going stale with sequel hell, but rather I'm always amazed at the new properties that come up and grab my attention, like clockwork, every few months.

And as for FMP, I suppose it's all a matter of taste, but I'd love to see more. And there isn't a ton of manga left to animate. Between the first season and Fumoffu they covered pretty much all of that. There are other novels that could get anime treatment though.

Well you still have a huge amount of story to go over with the latest novels(I'd love to see the Christmas novel animated). I have no problem with series like AMG putting out second seasons and the like, but I guess I have Gundam Seed fatigue syndrome. Every where I looked it was Gundam Seed Destiny, Gundam Seed Stargazer(I botched that), and Gundam Seed: We want to sell you models.

While I like existing properties, I sometimes wish that they'd create new shows that are pretty good as well.

For me, it really depends on the quality of the story. I've occasionally dipped into the Manga forum's thread on Fruits Basket, to see what happens after the anime ended, and I guess I found it interesting enough to want to see the rest of it animated.

On the other hand, I've read the Alien Nine manga, which goes far beyong the short OVA they made, and I can say that I don't have much appetite to see it animated, no matter how much I liked the OVA.

FMP, I'm pretty sure will be good enough to merit further anime treatment, so I hope that KyoAni and Kadokawa get around to it when they think there's a good way of doing it (in terms of putting together a coherent, viable half/full season).

So, it really depends on the quality of the story for me.

I guess I have Gundam Seed fatigue syndrome.
But unlike Gundam Seed (or well, unlike its fans say, I haven't seen it), FMP just keeps getting better.

I stumbled across something about this same topic while I was looking over Funi's site yesterday. They don't have much more information than you do, but here's a quote from part of it:

Apparently, Takaya-sensei stated that she does not want another Furuba series, but the site that had this information has since pulled it.

The page that said that is: http://astronerdboy.blogspot.com/2007/01/why-no-fruits-basket-2.html , and that page was posted here: http://community.funimation.com/forum/tm.aspx?m=18029

If you ask the person who wrote that blog the quote was from, they might me able to help you a bit. Based on that quote, though, I think we can still hold on to our hope for a season 2, if only for a little while.

Well we looked and looked for where Takaya-sensei had made this statement, but it is no longer on the web in English form. Its difficult for me to do any great searching in Japanese, but I've not been able to come up with anything yet. I decided to research it when I first learned that Takaya-sensei wasn't happy with the anime adaptation (which FUNimation stated some time back).

That said, if you read the blog entry I made (http://astronerdboy.blogspot.com/2007/01/why-no-fruits-basket-2.html), I think you'll see why there will never be a 2nd Furuba series. Feel free to let me know what you think.

I started to read it but stopped when you started going into manga spoilers (which haven't come up in the U.S. release yet) with no warning.

In response to your blog:

Adam Sheehan's reasons for no Furuba: With #1 being obviously false, I immediately question the validity of his sources. Therefore, I'll acknowledge the other two statements as rumors at best, unless a valid source shows up (which leads us back to this thread).

Hat: As you mentioned, could easily be fixed via flashbacks in a new season.

Ending Confrontation: As you mentioned, this could be tricky to work around, however, it could be done. The way I see it, they could either try to tweak future scenes to adapt to elements added by that scene (not 100% sure on the feasability of this option, since I haven't read all of the manga yet...), or they could do what some other shows have done and release a special edition version of that episode that replaces the scene with one that would fit better. Either way there could be problems, but at least there exists a way to move forward.

So my personal thoughts (optimistic as they may be) are that if they want to make more Furuba, they'll make it work somehow. It all boils down to wheither or not they want to make more, which is what we're looking/waiting for.

BTW, I apologise for not recognising you as an AoD member... :sd:

What spoilers are you referring to? Akito-san?

Anyway, I never felt Daichi-san was that enthused about doing another series and Takaya-sensei clearly would be irritated by the changes to Akito-san's character. But she was smart to retain some copyright control of her product, so if she doesn't want another series, it won't happen.
