Just been on the Gundam Musou PS3 game site watching the new video that went up and it has suddenly sparked an interest to check out G Gundam which, if the pilot in that clip is anything to go by, looks like exactly the sort of mech series I'd love to see.

I'm not the most experienced Gundam fan as I've only seen SEED and what has been released on R1 of SEED Destiny, but have enjoyed what I have seen so far.

Basically, is this one of the better Gundam series and would it be worth my time? Also, what is the best way to buy this - the Anime Legends sets or the collectors boxes? Any edits etc worth noting?

Thanks :neko:

G-Gundam is absolutely nothing like any of the other Gundam shows, so only being familiar with Seed is neither here nor there. Comparing it in quality to the other Gundam shows is rendered a pretty fruitless excerise as well.

That said, I absolutely think it would be the kind of series you would enjoy.

Well it does feature older animation, a testosterone filled lead character and, from what I've seen (although I may be off with this) some slightly Go Nagai influenced character designs. So yeah, it looks like it'll definitely appeal :neko:

I have seen almost every Gundam series and no G-Gundam is not one of the better Gundam series. However, it is easily the most unique Gundam series out there. Think Street Fighter with Gundams, that would be the best way to sum up the show. The early episodes are very repetitive but fortunately a plot does appear around episode 15 or so. Honestly I've only watched about half of the series so far so I can't comment on the last half but I understand that it does get better.

As far as Anime Legends vs the Collector's Boxes, they are the exact same discs in both sets so it doesn't really matter which you buy. Same thing, just different packaging. There aren't any edits to the series and the original Japanese opening and ending credits are left untouched.

If you liked SEED then you will like the original Gundam series and Zeta Gundam. They may be old, but they're classic. Gundam SEED borrowed heavily from those two series. If you want something a little newer there's always Gundam Wing. Before Gundam SEED came along, Gundam Wing probably had the best looking and most original Gundam designs. I don't think the overall plot is as good as SEED but it's still very entertaining.

Keep in mind that Gundam SEED, Gundam Wing and G-Gundam are all Alternate Universe Gundam series so they are absolutely nothing alike.

WTF? Hell no.

You haven't watched many Super Robot shows have you?

G Gundam is a Super Robot show much more in the same vein as Getter Robo, Mazinger, and the other shows of that type. It is filled with people triumphing with the power of courage, guts and just beating the shit out of their opponents.

I always speak of G Gundam as being the most honest Gundam series out there, in that it's very obviously trying to get attention, sell toys, and feature robots beating the crap out of each other. :P

It's a fun series that eschews the "war is bad" theme of most of the rest of the various Gundam series in favor of having a good time. Yes, it's more or less just a tournament fighting setup that happens to have Gundams in it, but it's almost because it has Gundams in it that it's that much more entertaining. The cast is enjoyable, and as you may see others mention here and there, I'm a big fan of the developing romance between our main character and his particular love interest, since it's written well, both in and of itself and in terms of how it fits into the series as a whole.

There's no difference between the original discs (singles or boxes) and the two recent collections, so pick up whichever one you can get the best deal on.

Now that is how you sell a mech show to me :D
It's settled *orders*

Thanks for the help guys.

It was kind of a dull series. Just a lot of whining from the lead character, some really odd plot twists, and some horrible ethnic stereotypes.
Having said that, I will now shame myself by saying that Rain has the best legs of any female in Anime.

Plus "Shining Finger" is just not all that scary a sounding finisher....

What Fencedude said!

IMO, it has its cheesy moments, but it was a nice enjoyable show with a nice plot and some great character development.

No. G is not one of the better gundam-shows. It's a little better than Superior Defender Gundam, but that's about it. Like someone said, it's like Street Fighter with Gundams. I'll add in it's like DBZ-Gundam coz of 'em really goes into some sort of Super Saijan mode. That's not all. It even features a Sailor Moon type Gundam. :sigh:

It's a bit of a fun dorky series, but just don't set your expectations high for it. Aim low. Really low. :sd:

Check out the mechas for it:

G-Gundam's one of my favorite entries in the franchise. It's a bit like Giant Robo meets Gundam, but without abandoning the core Gundam themes. And though it's cheesy and over-the-top, it's a good sort of cheese that complements the often fantastic proceedings. Once I got past the episodic setup portion of the show and into the story arcs, it really "clicked" with me and I enjoyed it all the way through.

I can't believe I've never seen this series before given all these sort of things people are saying about it. I think it was made with me in mind :D

Volume 2 of the Essentials is backordered at DVDPacific, but I'm hoping they ship vol 1 ASAP!

Well, this series could be called the black sheep of the Gundam Family, I used to call it DragonBall G :P , just because it harkens back to the Super Robot Shows of old with the over the top weaponry and mecha design, mixing it with a Shounen Jump type tournament anime and going full bore with the central themes of a Gundam show.

The action is hot and heavy, after a few eps that are of an episodic nature, the series go full bore with with storyline that develops the characters and the story up to the inevitable conclusion, with the fate of the world in the balance.

So go for it, I recommend it. ;)

I also recommend this show to anyone who likes the premises already given. I saw this show in its original run in Toonami and was completely enchanted. Yes, it is sometimes cheesy and spewing nonsense, but it manages to balance everything out with the character development and relationships in between said characters.

As for the releases, the individual volumes are still available, but the Box Sets collecting them are going OOP (there are many retailers that don't carry it anymore). The anime legends collections contain the same amount of disks with the same type of extras and all. They just don't have all 12 fantastic covers.

You can tell I love this show, can't you? :sd: To me, its one show I can watch again as it has great replay value.

Karen... (Off to scour the last Box (#3) for the best price). :P

Somehow...I think you just don't quite "get" it.
