so far i've seen the female as a goddess, angel, elf, vampire, android, alien (flcl, tenchi,) dragon (dragon half,) animal (tutu,) monster (kemonozume,) video tape (video girl ai,) weapon (elemental gelade,) hand (midori days,) and book (demonbane.) what other unusual romance where one of the couple is anything but human? i know ginban kaleidoscope has a ghost in it.

I guess Chobits fits under the 'android' umbrella, but if you haven't seen it and want to go to a more specific 'personal computer' subset, try that =P

And Ginban Kaleidoscope is a fantastic little show, definitely try that out.

thanks disarm but i am not really looking for anime recommendations. and i've seen A LOT of anime already so no need to recommend anything. i am just looking for more unusual romance categories that's all. maybe a female version of ghost, maybe a music instrument, maybe a flower, a fairy... who knows. and an example of each would be nice.

The only one I could think off the top of my head without repeating the ones already mentioned is werewolf (Riiya from Akazukin Chacha), though that is played for laughs more than romance...

Oh wait, shinigami (messenger of death) in Full Moon o Sagashite. The pair in question being
Takuto and Mitsuki.

Saikano, the story of a boy and the WMD he loves

Shakugan no Shana, the story of a Flame Haze and the zombie she loves, but won't admit to it.

The Melancholy Of Haruhi Suzumiya, the story of God, and the guy she loves, but won't admit it.

Well there's Kamisama Kazoku about the romance between the Son of God and an angel. There's also the incestous subtext between him and his family members and there's the other girl whom saying more would be revealing spoilers.

Don't know if it counts as another type..., but how about as a "living" Mech.

Dolores from Zone of the Enders fits that description. Though it wasn't quite what one would call a romance between the main characters.

ah i just thought of another type: doll (for those who don't immediately realize, rozen maiden.) i guess the japanese are outta ideas by now.

Grumble Grumble Grumble

And for another entry in the 'Personal Computer Accessory', there's the harem comedy series 'Hand Maid May' (And like Chi, May has a USB interface...)

Another unique one would be 'Plant' or 'Flower' in the series "Wolf's Rain"

Transport! Not seen it for a long time, but the woman on Goku Midnight Eye is an android with handlebars on her back, & not much else!

There's also a certain character in a movie who turns into a pink car to carry her lover to safety ;)

The guy in Spirited Away who is also a dragon & fancies Chihiro.

thanks for the list. you must have put quite a bit of effort into it. though what i am looking for is more on the non-human side. humans like ninja, psychic, magician, or time traveler are still human, just with special abilities. sorta like magical girls are human. anyway thanks again. any new categories?

any new categories?

Well, in Rune Soldier, Merrill has an obsessive attachment to a jar full of money. Although the jar itself isn't alive, Merrill behaves as if it were her child or her lover.

And in .hack//SIGN, Tsukasa is
an artificial personality created from data stored in an MMORPG.

Housing Engi has a few but the one that stick out most in my mind is Kibi and Suppusan. Kibi being a bird demon and Suppusan who looks like a flying hippo..

There are are few other usual ones. But that one takes the cake.

In Vampire Princess Miyu, Chisato is
a crow.

I don't really remember any romance involving Chisato but if you've thinking of the girl-girl subtext between her and Miyu :D :P , then we can also mention that Miyu is an immortal vampire.

That would be a wolf/flower romance, just to leave humans completely out of it.

"Hyper Police" had a couple-- a werewolf guy chasing a somewhat clueless half human half cat girl, and a nine-tailed (almost) fox married a human.

Then there's Canal, the spaceship in "Lost Universe." Was that a romance with Kane, or were they just buddies? Oh, yeah, Lipuwhateveritis in "Maps" is another spaceship.

In Ping Pong Club, Maeno claims to have fallen passionately in love with a ladybug, which he names Miyuki, so he and his "girlfriend" can qualify for a couples-only ping pong tournament.

Elsewhere in the series, a female ghost haunts Takeda because she has mistaken him for her lover.

Speaking of ghosts, Mitsuru in Here is Greenwood is haunted by a girl who seems smitten with him.

Does anyone know any anime where the romance is between characters who are not-so-good-looking or popular?

And I don't mean as a sideshow storyline, but I mean they are major characters.

Gan-chan, I seem to remember you had some sort of affair with a teapot, didn't you?

Also, Chibi-Usa had an equine boyfriend in the fourth season of Sailor Moon.

NO, I don't mean those "geek with hot girl/android/alien" types of shows, which there are plenty of. Either a guy with a not-so-good-looking girl or BOTH the man and woman are rather homely looking.

The girl in Brigadoon is a geeky looking girl with glasses. Her romantic interest is her living mecha protector.

Thanks! :) But I don't think it has been fansubbed, and the chances this will be licensed is very slim, considering the unattractiveness of the two leads, its age, and its long length.

I don't know, "L" looks reasonably attractive. From my brief "research" of it so far, there's a debate about whether she is "tall" or "big." I consider her a bit on the curvy side from the drawings, but 80s anime usually always did have generally "cubbier" women anyway.

Here are some screencaps (http://anime.mikomi.org/episode/1481/01.html). I wouldn't say she's ugly, but she's definitely not your typical gorgeous anime girl. For example, I wouldn't say she's as attractive as Madoka from KOR.

That's also called Pumpkin Wine yes? I wouldn't mind seeing that, just because the characters are not the usual suspects, but I have a feeling it won't make it over here anytime soon. :(

In Haunted Junction, the shinto priestess girl is all gaga over the little animated statue of a boy(golem??), and over little boys in general. There are various episodes with ghosts/spirits interacting with the people they have loved before in there as well.

In Requiem from the Darkness it is clear the female spirit and the historian might have a thing for each other by the end...

Jack Proton: Petitte cosette? I don't know, I din't think of of that situation being a 'romance' :sd: More like a seduction if anything. SCARY seduction.

In Fruits Basket, there is romance between people who can't really have romance with another person of the same sex because it will become a show inappropriate for the morally conscious

In XXXholic, at first I thought Watanuki will have a thing with Yuuko, who really is neither human nor god nor whatever on Earth she is...then I realized that he'll probably have a thing with a spirit/fairy...this is all speculation of course

In Genshiken, there is romance between an otaku and a normal human girl

In One Piece, there is no romance yet, but I hope there will be a tiny bit of romance between a rubber boy and at least 1 of his 2 female shipmates :P

In Black Lagoon, there is romance between a killer maid from the future and a young human boy

In Soul Taker, there is romance between a boy who is not really human and Question) a cosplaying mutant nurse?
Answer) a girl who is one part of his sister, who is not really human

In Bastard, there is much romance between an undead bastard and many many other female beings

In Maze, Maze is involved in every type of possible human romantic relation...including Maze himself vs Maze himself and Maze himself vs Maze herself.
Yep Maze would probably be the quintessential romance anime...that's right...

As a previous poster mentioned, Utena. The characters are [were?] mostly human, I believe, but the types of romantic relationships are almost comparable to that in Maze

I'm sort of surprised nobody mentioned this yet. (Unless I missed it...)

Ichiro and the Panda Bear in Nerima Daikon Brothers. I mean...I think Pandaikon isn't female (I haven't sen the show yet), but I'm pretty sure it still counts. XD

Jack Proton: Petitte cosette? I don't know, I din't think of of that situation being a 'romance' :sd: More like a seduction if anything. SCARY seduction.
True enough but I count 'scary seductions' as romances too. Its just a small matter of degree. For example, what would vampire lit from Dracula onward be without all those scary romantic seductions between monsters and pure swooning ladies. The object of the main character's affection in Cossette is still wooing him.
