I've seen claymation being used in Dual, Futakoi Alternative, Coyote Ragtime Show. Have they been used in any other anime? Do the rest of you like claymation in anime?

Well, as long as it's not in the episode, it doesn't really bother me. But I think it looks silly. I didn't like it in the UFO Table EDs (FutaAlt, Manabi Straight, and apparently CRS). I'd rather just get some nice animation to go with the song. If it's the claymation I just skip the ED.

Claymation is something that can be fun when used on the side as it provides a nice change of pace. It can also helps things stand out. However it's not something I care to see on a regular basis. Hence why I like the ending animation to Manabi Straight, but I'm glad it's not used for the actual story content. So in short it's good when used on the side.

It's also used in the eyecatches for Overman King Gainer.

I liked the claymation endings because it's something you don't see a lot of. It was just a neat little thing ala the Haruhi dance to add to the ending. Now I could see getting ticked about it if all of the sudden the show burst into claymation, but as a ending it's fine.

I have to agree with Disarm here, I wince in the scene where the characters wink in the ED for Manabi Straight. I also felt it really clashed with the style of the show for Futakoi Alternative and Coyote Ragtime Show. I'm usually a big fan of op/ed's but I pretty much always skip the claymation ones for UFO Table series.

Tristia of the Deep-blue Sea had a claymation ending, too, but that was also UFOTable.

I remember that in one episode preview for Lamune, it was done in Claymation. It was cute and funny with the giant watermelon. Don't remember if Lamune was produced by ufotable or not.

The only claymation sequence in anime that I can think of is Ninin ga Shinobuden's ED sequence; sure enough, another ufotable animation. (Funny, I don't remember Coyote Ragtime Show's ED at all...) I thought the Shinobuden ED was made really well. The problem was that since it almost acted as a story in itself (one that was good the first time through), I only found it humorous for the first three eps or so.

Speaking of this statement and others thing said in the thread if I ever watch a Ufotable anime without a claymation ending that's going to end up feeling severely out of place. I guess I'll end up becoming too used to the pattern. Maybe the claymation really is their signature.

I think part of the reason the claymation may appeal to me on a limited level could be the feeling it gives. Like they're saying "Yes even in this day and age some of us are still willing to make the effort to do something like this" In short it's like a reminder of the past.

Coyote's is a slow bar scene. It's rather boring, just like the ED song itself.

The only claymation I've liked was Ninja Nonsense's ED, but that's probably more because the song is really fun than anything else.

aye, that was the one I was gonna say

I have the clip on my myspace

interestingly enough, the final episode has the full-length song accompanied by an extended claymation sequence

See the entry "Puppetry and Stop-motion" (pp. 513–5) in The Anime Encyclopedia, Revised & Updated. For instance, while technically it's not anime (since the creative work was American), Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer was done as work-for-hire by Tadahito Mochinaga's studio for Videocraft (now Rankin/Bass), and a number of other shows were done for R/B by MOM Films, also Japanese.

Magic Users Club has a claymation ending sequence.

Also, the first Guyver series used pictures of models of the creatures in each episode's creature dossier. No movement, but no drawings, either.

All ufotable productions use it.... it's their trademark. I agree they've become increasingly out of place with their newer shows, especially Manabi Straight.

I dunno if I would call the Manabi Straight ED clay animated since the girls weren't exactly clay. But I don't know what else to call it so I guess that sticks.

To answer the question. I don't mind clay animation in anime. It shows the staff wants to think outside the box and not use some generic mostly still frame ED animation (Well, the songs are great). You also don't see much clay animation used much for anything these days anyway, it's mostly CGI. :P

I can't remember if tbere was any clay involved, but wasn't there a stop-motion OP for Honey and Clover?

Something like that, and it was horribly annoying. Definitely one I skipped every time. I guess they were trying to tap into the whole "artsy" theme, but it fell flat on its face. Ditto for season two. (edit: not ditto as in also stop motion, it was all cg, but ditto on being lame)

You mean the various shots of the plastic food? Interesting but I always have to fast forward when they get to that lobster salad. For some reason, it makes me cringe.
