I was thinking about this lately, a combination of me watching through Utena right now and seeing the anime girls threads... so which characters do you think look much better with their hair down (when it's not usually like that)? I was thinking of Anthy in Utena and Miwako in Honey & Clover. I suppose their usual hairstyles might be part of their charm for some, but they seemed 10x prettier in the few times they did have their hair down to me.

YUMI FUKUZAWA

Oh god, Yumi looks SOOOO much hotter with her hair down than in her normal style. I hope in her third year she starts wearing it down normally

Emma from Victorian Romance Emma. She has to keep her hair up in the "maid thing" all day but when she lets her hair down you can really see why William loves her.

Sophia from Last Exile is a good example. The scene where she kisses Claus is :virgin: The normally professional and stern looking first officer of the Silvana looks absolutely stunning.

And while Tessa from the Full Metal Panic! franchise is absolutely adorable with her normal hair style, especially when she absentmindedly plays with her ponytail, when the hair comes down, she instantly becomes a gorgeous, sexy light haired goddess... Uuuugh...

Nanoha and Fate... a major reason I'm stoked for StrikerS ^^

YU-ME-MI-YA A-RI-KA! I like her braids too, but her hair is down to little that I crave it more and more.

Hmm, Yumi I can sort of agree with, although I love her both ways. Nanoha maybe. Fate I disagree with though, gotta have the twintails. That's for younger Fate though, older Fate looks just fine with her hair down. I know there are way more but I'm far too lazy to try and remember.

Sakurazaki Setsuna. With the left-side ponytail, she's just kind of cute, but with the hair down and some nekomimi, she's :bignosebleed: squared.

To balance this a bit (and because I'm currently in Princess Tutu Fangirl Mode!..again)....

FAKIR.
He looks all fine and good when he has his hair up...besides how...large it is. (That thing is HUGE. What are you keeping in there, Fakir?!)
With his hair up:
Higher quality, from the side. (http://pics.livejournal.com/haleysings/pic/0000ea9e/g16)
Much lower quality, more from the front (http://pics.livejournal.com/haleysings/pic/0000fr6w/g16)

But when his hair finally gets out of that ponytail...free! It's free, I tell you! It can move! It can breathe! His bangs don't look like a bird's beak!
Plus, he gets a chance to show off how well he actually takes care of his hair.
(Okay, so the water may have something to do with it, too, but oh well.)
Nice close up of Fakir with his hair down. Rawr. (http://pics.livejournal.com/haleysings/pic/0000brcb/g16)
Smaller, farther away picture, where we get to see it moving free! Free! (http://pics.livejournal.com/haleysings/pic/0000cr9e/g16)
From behind, showing off how much hair he still has. O.o So...much...hair. (http://pics.livejournal.com/haleysings/pic/0000d7c1/g16)

Sadly, we rarely get to see it down. He goes to school with it up. He dances with it up. He BATHES with it up. HE SLEEPS with his hair in a ponytail. Doesn't it ever get a rest?!

Fakir, your hair wants to be free! Free as the wind blows!

Anyway...back to the girls. XD
(As a side note, Emma really DOES look better with her hair down...too bad that wasn't the fashion at the time.)

Ryoko from Tenchi Muyo! was the first person that came to mind. Although she is a lot more recognizable with her hair put up the usual way, I just think she looks a lot better with her hair straight and without all the gel even though it would make her look less unique and a bit more generic-looking.

I think Edward Elric from FMA looks hotter with his hair down, particularly during one of the episodes where he dyes his hair to hide his identity and he's clotheless expect for his boxers while he has his hair down in one scene in that episode. :>

Ayeka (Tenchi(though it looks fine with the braids too)
Kyoko (FMP) (glasses off, too)
Menchi (Hunter X Hunter) (what were they thinking when they gave her that hairstyle (http://img153.imageshack.us/img153/4618/hunter1pj6.jpg)...)

Different, but kind of similar... Mao (Full Metal Panic) looked a lot better with her wig on. She should grow her hair out.

I agree with Ed Elric looking better with his hair down. Renji from Bleach also looks better with his hair down.

Emma from Victorian Romance Emma. She has to keep her hair up in the "maid thing" all day but when she lets her hair down you can really see why William loves her.

Well, that and the fact that adult women in Victorian England did not wear their hair down, ever.

I suppose their usual hairstyles might be part of their charm for some, but they seemed 10x prettier in the few times they did have their hair down to me.

I don't have any specific girls to mention myself right now. Although I must admit there was something special about seeing Nanoha and Fate with their hair down in Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha. Still it's hard to decide if I like them better that way. However this statement does bring a thought to mind.

Sometimes what truly makes a girl attractive when her hair is down is just that. The fact she normally doesn't have it down. In other words it comes off as a very special event for the viewer. You finally get to see just how long her hair is as well. In a sense this only helps make her more lovely.

At least for me this is the appeal of seeing a girl with her hair down that normally doesn't have it down. This doesn't mean I like her better that way, but it does mean I feel rewarded when I see her like that. Again I bring up Nanoha and Fate as very good examples of girls I feel look good that way.

Her and the same thing for Nina-chan too.

Eri Sawachika of School Rumble.

She's hot with her twin-tails, pony-tails, and no-tails/hair-up/hair-down.

Oh, yeah. Tessa of FMP-franchise is divine, also. :neko:

What a scene that was... I liked Sophia already, but when she let her hair down, I was completely stunned. Wow! :virgin:

As hairstyles don't change all that much for most characters, it took me a while to remember another instance, but I finally thought of:

Pacifica Casull

When down, her hair rivals (bests?) Raquel's.

And while Tessa from the Full Metal Panic! franchise is absolutely adorable with her normal hair style, especially when she absentmindedly plays with her ponytail, when the hair comes down, she instantly becomes a gorgeous, sexy light haired goddess... Uuuugh...

Ok, I'm moving this up my rental queue a bit. :sweatdrop:

Since little girls like Nanoha and Fate was already mentioned, I can think of 2 more little girls that looked so cute with their hair down:

Misty from Pokemon and Chibi-Usa of Sailor Moon.

Oh, I just thought of one who I flat out didn't like at all until her hair went down, at which point I started to like her a lot.

Viletta Nu from Code Geass.

The Red Comet

This probably doesn't count since they're different characters, but Shion looks better than Mion from Higurashi no Naku ni.

And althogh it's not anime, Katara looked quite nice with her hair down in the Avatar: The Last Airbender season finale. It was the first thing I thought of when I read this thread.

Which makes an even stronger reason to make her the subject of my post :P

It's funny you mention Utena, because I always though Nanami looks hotter than a very hot thing on a hot day when her is down, like during her duel.

The thing about Renji, Fakir, Jin from Samurai Champloo and Kenshin is that they don't let their hair down; rather, it comes loose during a fierce battle, which makes it so much hotter. Ed seems to be the only male who actually takes his hair down on occasion.

Hmmm... It's kind of hard for me, as the ones I like usually have their hair down.

Lum Invader - She does have her hair up at times.
Kyoko Otonashi - She only puts it up for formal occasions (such as visiting her dead husband)
Haruhi Suzumiya - She looks best when her hair is not twisted into more than one "tail", but looks best with her post-explanation hairstyle.
Naru Narusagawa - She only puts it up for her "bookworm" look.

Those that counter this:

Kaoru Kamiya - She looks very cute with her hair in her ponytail.
Natsuki Sasahara - She's just too cure with her hair down, but looks best with it braided.

Of course, my favorite character can neither put her hair up or down, as it's a blue bob.

(the bolded part there is my edit)
Mm, true. I think the combonation of the water (which, with Princess Tutu's style, makes his hair look a little bit more like...actual hair...with strands...), and the scene that it's in probably helps Fakir's hair-down hottness. He really DOES need to wear it down more, though. Seriously.

And I think Ed always looks nice, so... :sd:

Oh! Good one! Actually her whole 'out of uniform' outfit makes her look much more feminine. It's a shame we don't get to see her wear it more often.

Tomcat beat me to it. :P Lum will occasionally put her hair up, and she is just fugly to me that way. Lony and wavy is definitely her best style!

Any female character who usually wears their hair up or bunched up in any fashion.

I also find preference to this rule for real girls, too. Hair that doesn't have scrunchies or clips or anything like that in it just looks more natural and beautiful to me. That's why I also think women can look pretty without putting on make-up. Make-up distracts, and not in a good way for me.

Quite a few already mentioned I like (particular Eri and Tessa) but the one that always stands out for me is Ruri Hoshino from the Nadesico movie. She's adorable in her pigtails both in the series and the movie, but when she comes out of the shower in that kimono and her hair down...she mimics the series looking like a yamato nadesico...sublime.

I was so happy when she let it down for a while... but then put it back up a few episodes later. >> << Darn it all!! :P

I think Pachi's answer was pretty much the most correct one so far, but I'll toss another as yet unmentioned character in the thread: Lumiere from Kiddy Grade.

I don't get tying one's hair back for style most of the time. I understand if you need to keep it out of your eyes when you put yourself through a work out or to make a certain impression at your place of employment, but really...just about every woman and man in the world should let their hair waft in the wind without restrictions, all shiny and mysterious-like.

Kenshin doesn't look "hotter" with his hair down- he looks downright demonic.

In regards to Pokemon:

If Jessie's hair was a bit "looser" (not jutting out from the back), and she curled it or something, I think it would look really good :) But then she would look like Jessibelle, and I guess James would have a heart attack.

Misty also look good with her hair down, though she very rarely does this.
