View Full Version : The Austin Powers effect in anime

For lack of a better comparison, the Austin Powers movies feature a gag where all kinds of normal ordinary items are used to block the nudity from being seen by the audience.

I've seen this happen a few times in anime. To give a few examples:
Neon Genesis Evangelion : A toothpick is used to obscure Shinji's you-know-what from the audience.

Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu , ep 9: Yuki Nagato is used to block the scenes of Haruhi forcibly removing Mikuru's clothes (blast you Yuki Nagato for denying us the pleasure the view the good stuff!)

What are some of the others that you found memorable? What is your favorite of such scenes?

This is neither memorable, nor a favorite, but in the second episode of Wandaba Style, Hanagata's afro and inability to sit still lend themselves well to covering up Kiku #8's naughty bits during a particular scene.

There's also the entire fourth episode of Tenamonya Voyagers, which might not entirely count since some of the items are worn as poor (though also excellent) substitutes for clothing, but there are moments here and there where a particular object or another character raising their head at just the right time saves our poor virgin eyes from the horrors of a young female's nakedness. At any rate, this is definitely memorable, and certainly a favorite. :D

(takes a shotgun and blasts the rubber duck)
Thanks to it, the audience didn't get to see the good stuff. :(

They did the same gag in the 4th episode of Pani Poni Dash

For some reason, I thought the "Austin Powers" effect had something to do with his teeth.

I came into the thread thinking it would be about characters that just won't die. "Why won't you die?!?"

Hmmm...

Fat Bastard comes to mind when I think of Austin Powers...

But, I'm not quite sure if there's an anime character that resembles Fat Bastard or much of his antics.

See the first opening of Pani Poni Dash, Kiiroi Vacances. The intro was clearly modeled after Austin Powers (hippy looks, peace symbols, etc.) and Mission Impossible (burning bomb fuse connected to Mesousa).

There was a Bamboo Shoot that hid us from Bachi Guu in 'Green Green' in a certain episode. There wasn't much hidden from us in that series, but thankfully that was hidden from us. ;)

Those were psychedelic images long before Austin Powers. And PPD parodies everything. In just the first disc I've seen jokes about numerous Japanese TV and film, as well as references to Phoenix Wright and Kill Bill.

For roughly half of the fourth episode of Tenamonya Voyagers, none of the characters wear any clothes. Instead, they string together random objects to cover themselves. These objects always hide the naughty bits, except in one shot where a character bends forward facing away from the camera. Sadly, an out-of-focus lever or antenna or something in the foreground happens to be in just the right place to cover it.

Go watch Legend of the Blue Wolves.

...or don't, if your eyes are prone to fits of bleeding. :)

I hate that rubber ducky and I want him to die.

There is also that fence that covers Kaname and Kyoko's goods and a convienient bottle of pump soap that prevents us from seeing what's-her-name's nipple.

Tenamonya Voyagers. The episode where the female cast's nudity is covered in the most bizarre ways -- giant props, household objects, neckties, etc, I can't even remember -- everything but the kitchen sink (and perhaps even that!) used as "clothing."

Do digital bikinis count? ;)

In all seriousness, steam seems to be a good choice for many anime.

Three separate mentions of it. :sd:

It's a ton of fun, and very pretty. It's also the point at which Akiyuki Shinbo went all weird and thus became certifiably awesome as a director. Oh, and for trivia's sake, this was also the first DVD-only Stateside anime release. As long as you don't mind the non-ending, you should be good to go. And yes, the fourth episode is as awesome and hilarious and fantastic as you might imagine; the odd outfits and bizarre sight gags that qualify it for this thread aren't just limited to a few minutes, but rather, they last the entire episode, and change almost every scene on top of that. :D

I think my favorite was the sandwich baggie with the goldfish in it.
