Are you a portable gamer? If so which it your primary portable gaming device?
Hells, the DS is my primary gaming device regardless of portability. I already have nearly as many games for it in the past year as I have for the PS2 since October 2000. So there it is. (Nor do I trade in games; I don't love the idea of bending over for Gamestop/EB.)

I bought a PSP at 12:13AM on launch day and I've used it nearly every day since. Mostly I use it on my lunch break at work since I have an hour lunch. Usually I play a game or watch some anime DVDs I ripped. I only wish there was an open Internet connection I could use at work.
I use it in the car to listen to music with a wireless adapter (which works great for only $20).
At home I use it to surf the net from the couch and watch anime/play games in bed.
I also like using it to share my camping pics with the slide show feature.
I was a portable gamer. I remember being so excited over the GBA because I thought it'd be like the SNES days all over again. After buying a dozen games I never played the fire went out and I think lately the kindling got doused with water since I was considering giving it all away to Good Will. I probably just should, then it'd get used maybe.

It'll be the Nintendo DS once the new Pokemon games (Diamond and Pearl) come out next month. Right now I'm still playing with my old GBA.

I remember my first gameboy. I exchange my bike that I got for my b-day and my mom found out, so I got my ass handed to me.

My portable gaming has slowed down tremendously. This is partially because I need a new GBA which I have yet to bother to get. Plus I haven't been in the mood to play most of the games I have. I need to find something new to play among what I currently have access to. Well there is also messing around with my brother's DS which has been an interesting system. So it's mainly DS or GBA for me. Don't feel like voting right now.

DS wins for me, absolutely no question. That does include GBA games, but still, I apparently haven't touched my actual GBA since the last time I played Crystal Chronicles - and I can't even remember when that was.

hmm... tough question. Guess I'd have to go with the DS since there's not only a lot of really good DS games, but I can also play all my GBA games on it. The PSP is pretty good, but I don't care about the multimedia functions which kills a lot of its usefulness for me. The system still has a lot of good games though even if most of them are either ports or remakes... honestly, I couldn't imagine not having both.

Pretty much equal between the DS and PSP. Had both since their respective US launches and play both a hell of a lot. The problem with these two though is that there are periods every few months where there's literally nothing coming out (like what we've just come out of right now, for example).
I play GBA games too but not as much as the other two.
I have a PSP but I don't use it as much as I thought I would. I've been tempted to buy a DS too but I'm not sure if I'd use it any more than the PSP. I also haven't seen any DS games that would finally convince me to buy a DS either... a few have come close but nothing has really sold me. Then again I haven't really seen many DS games in person either.

It'll be the Nintendo DS once the new Pokemon games (Diamond and Pearl) come out next month. Right now I'm still playing with my old GBA.
If it weren't for Advance Wars DS coming out much earlier, it would definitely be these two new installments of Pokemon that would have been the only other reasons for me to purchase a Nintendo DS, so if it weren't for the former game I probably wouldn't have owned a DS until around this time. I think the reason I purchased a Gameboy Advance was because of Pokemon, although the first game I bought for the system was actually the first Advance Wars, having no idea how awesome it was going to end up being. Anyway, I'm still playing the previous Pokemon games right now and by the time the new DS versions come out, which I've already reserved both of, I should have most if not all the pokemon from those games ready to be transferred over.
I'm not nearly as interested in any other portable right now other than the DS. The PSP has too many negatives for me to even bother with at this time. It's too expensive, has a short battery life and there are no games that I want. So the DS is hands down the winner for me.
Apropos to this topic to some degree, I gots questions. Who else here has a DS Lite with a cracked hinge? I remember something about this on the old UBB forums (for which I don't have the url anymore), but I seem to recall that there was some requirement as to its severity before Nintendo would replace the unit. Anybody remember the truth of the situation? I just noticed the crack today, but now it mocks me with its cracked-ness.

I haven't touched any of my portables lately, but the DS has gotten most of the attention regardless. :sd:

I bought a PSP in July 2006 and I've play it quite a bit. I really like it. Last semester I used it a lot to listen to music during my walking class (P.E., so easy, lol) and earned gold medals in Wipeout in the back of my Bio class. :D The latest game I purchased was Field Commander. The games I want the most right now are Gurumin and Afterburner.

I've become a bit of a Nintendo hater due to people's almost fanatical levels of hypocrisy with the company. I grew up with them, but they haven't been doing gamers a whole lot of favors in the home console department over the last ten years. Just release subpar machines with subpar software lineups that people have somehow forgiven them for, while gamers are bursting at the seams over even completely false rumors that Sony or Microsoft is out to get the consumers.
With that said, get a DS. Why? Overall software's better. Not a lot of genres the PSP wins at. FPS, racing, sports, and fighting, which would be enough to do me in too, only I wasn't finding a lot of fun in playing fighters with the PSP controls. Sucks too. I really liked the PSP hardware overall. Slick as a damn pimp.
Still, it's taken awhile, and good releases are far between, but the PSP is no Nintendo Gamebrick. It's slowly amounting enough titles to make it worthwhile, and it is pretty damn sexy. But if you're only getting one? Get a DS. It is pretty much THE primary portable device.

GBA is still my primary portable gaming device :nervous:. I think I only own three DS games.

DS for me. Sure I only have 19 DS games while having 16 GB/GBC and 52 GBA games, but nowadays I 90% of the time use my DS for all my portable gaming needs. It's just great in everything...except online gaming with all those different friend codes for every game. But at least it works great. :P

Question for the PSPeople: What's recommended right now? I'm thinking to pick one up sooner or later (Symphony's only six months away), and I have a few other games on my list. Assume I'm an RPGamer with a jones for wacky-patacky puzzle games and platformers (because, really, that's what I'm).
(Side note: For those considering the DS, my favorite's Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime, which is possibly the best Zelda-type game since Link to the Past.)

RPGs - Tales of Eternia, Breath of Fire III (these are the only two I own but there's also Valkyrie Profile Lenneth and 4 or 5 coming by the end of the year).
Puzzle - Capcom Puzzle World (Pang Bros, Puzzle Fighter) is the only one I own as I don't really play puzzle games. I would also count Lumines and Every Extend Extra as they are music/puzzle/weird games and are excellent (EEE is one of the PSPs best) although I'm not sure if it's what you're looking for.
Platform - Locoroco, Daxter, Ratchet & Clank, Gurumin (more action-RPG but has platforming elements).

Got to go with the PSP as I have like 17 games to like 2 for my DS :P.
I try to play it as much as I can. Still missing games for it like Socom, Every Extend Extra, The Warriors but for the most part I got all the games I want that the system has. Can't wait for what's down the line though such as Tales of the World, Disgaea, Jeanne D'Arc, Final Fantasy Tactics, FF Crisis Core, Silent Hill Origins, God of War PSP. The PSP IMO has a bright future indeed.

Domestically? Not much, really. Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth and Ys: Ark of Napishtim were some good ones. Most of the other PSP RPGs look like they fall somewhere in the land of generic titles. Of course, as johnny stated, there are the import titles, such as Tales of Eternia and Breath of Fire III (the European imports obviously have English text, making it easier to recommend).
As for puzzlers, I've only tried Lumines, so I can't comment much. :sd:
And platformers...I didn't even bother.

In that case you should get Puzzle Quest as it is a cross between the RPG and the puzzle genre. It's available for both the DS and PSP. I just bought the DS version yesterday and can't stop playing it. The PSP version does look a lot nicer but it does have a bug in that the comrades that you pick up don't lend their abilities to the battles. The PSP version has more save slots due to the use of the memory stick and also allows for some scores while the DS version has only two save slots and no scores.
The main problem with the DS version is just due to the way it looks. They should have selected a different font/size/smoothing for the text in the main storyline sequences as it looks very fuzzy. I would have liked the puzzle pieces to be a bit larger as they could have been a bit sharper. Some have mentioned stylus control issues but I didn't have any problems as I just tap on the pieces, not dragging. One thing for sure, I hope that game sells very well so a future version will allow online playing, currently it's limited to local multicard playing.
If you are still unsure on this game, you can download a PC demo from here - oddly enough the PC version isn't available yet even though the DS and PSP versions are based on the PC version!

Demos? Heh! PC versions? Hah! A Mac Jedi craves not these things. :P (On a more serious note, Puzzle Quest sort of caught my eye but it looks like a game I'd probably buy for $20 or less. There's no emoticon for shrugging.)

DS, by far. Nowadays my GBA SP only gets used when I want to trade Pokemon or when I want to play a Gamecube/GBA link compatible game.

DS, seeing as I don't own a PSP..yet.
It wasn't really the features that made me decide here, because if it was, the PSP is better. The DS stylus features are practically useless for the type of games I like.
The DS got a new SRW title, where the PSP got a port..and it plays GBA games as well, so..

I'd strongly recommend Tales of Eternia myself... the combat system is entertaining and the game has a shit-ton of extra stuff to explore... I was honestly pretty surprised.
I also think that regardless of genre preferences, you need to have DJ Max Portable if you own a PSP. Best music game ever (I cannot wait for the sequel this month.)

Highly, highly agree. While I don't think it's quite the best music game ever, it's definitely in the top 3 for me (off the top of my head only Gitaroo Man beats it) and in terms of this style of music game, IMO it's better than Beatmania.
I wasn't going to get the sequel just yet but I'll be preordering it pretty soon.
Two other non-platform/RPG/puzzle games that aren't all that well known (i.e. I'm not including big hitters like MGS Portable Ops, GTA etc etc) I would highly, highly recommend are Shutokou Battle and Initial D Street Stage.
I've probably put more time into those two combined than my other PSP games combined.

Hey, I have a question about Tales of Eternia for the PSP.
Waaay, back in the day, when the game came out for the Playstation, the US version cut out all the skits. Are the skits in the english PSP version? Or have they been cut again?

I wish I could say that. Stupid work and the no electronics in the building rule. That's why if you have a cell phone where I work it's good to have insurance on it from your provider. Otherwise in the stupidly hot Maryland summers your cell phone will fry and/or melt when you leave it in the car for 8+ hours. :sigh:

Were the skits lengthy like in Tales of Symphonia? If so, then no, they definitely weren't in there. The characters pop up momentarily to tell you where to go when you hit select, but that's as close as you get to the skits.
Still, I do prefer the PSP version to the PS1 version just because there's no loading times and the game looks better.

As he said, the skits were cut. The game is identical to the one released on the PS1, save for the changes to the screen ratio.
