Just finished this series (as I noted in the recommendation topic), and I must say I am thoroughly impressed. I had the feeling this would be something I would like at least, given the positive comments I've gotten relating to it, but it turned out to be something that surpassed even those expectations in the end. To be frank, I wasn't all that impressed in the first several episodes. It seemed to be a little slow for my liking. Around the time where we are introduced to Glenda's world and Cocoloo and Elmina are revealed as candidates, things seemed to take off from there, though. I really got to care about the characters a lot, which made the last several episodes very tense for sure.

I suppose part of the reason I was a bit suspicious at first is that sometimes the moe material can be pretty vapid at times. To some people, it can even reach the point of general level of disgust with the whole phenomenon. When gems like these come along, though (similarly with Rozen Maiden and Mahoraba~Heartful days), it kind of disappoints me when some people automatically associate it with the perceived "weirdness"... and thus won't really give them a chance. I suppose there's no changing that for the most part (just at there's no changing how magical girl series seem to fare in the R1 market :sigh: ), but just something related that I wanted to get off my chest.

Back to the subject at hand, now! :D Which of the Petite Princesses and Stewards is your favorite? This one's going to be MUCH harder for me than I thought. Time to think it over... :)

(hold on, poll will be in the next post, clicked the wrong button :sd: )

Cocoloo, hands down, is my favorite. I was somewhat miffed that Cocoloo only gets one episode devoted to her while the other four girls get at least two episodes each. Even the episode where they go to Cocoloo's world is more about Yucie and Beth than her. Elmina is second, because episode 19 is my favorite episode.

Picking my favorite steward is tougher. I didn't really feel strongly about any of them. I voted for Chawoo primarily because I love his dub voice. Gaga would probably be second.

I like all the girls in one way or another (except maybe Beth--but I think she was supposed to annoy to an extent), but I picked Yucie. Her sunny disposition and can do attitude is a complete opposite from me, so naturally I like it.

For stewards, I liked the comic relief supplied by Cube, though Gaga's unflappability and Belbel's cuteness make them close seconds.

I like Yucie and Glenda equally. I picked Glenda in the poll because I thought that she could use an extra vote. Now I see that it is Yucie who needed help. :sigh:
Cocoloo is a close third, but she is not a favorite because she just does not do much. You might say that she does not have much of a presence. :D
Even though Elmina is fourth she was coming on strong at the end of the series. She was introduced relatively late, and I still did not get to like her for several episodes because she seemed too aloof. But when she did get comfortable with the other girls and started to interact with them, especially her sparring with Glenda, I really started to love her. But it was too late for her to overtake Glenda and Yucie.
Beth just came in too late and acted bitchy too long. I realize that she had good reasons for the way that she acted, but by the time that I grew to like her it was too late for her to be any more than a distant fifth.

I did not really like any of the stewards a lot, but I did not dislike them either.
I picked Belbel in the poll because I have always been a sucker for ditsy, air-headed fairies (of the tiny, flying variety :sd: )

Favorite Girl: Yucie
She's so adorable, with her cheerful attitude and her big forehead. I love it when she and Glenda try to out-do each other (Glenda is my other favorite.)

Favorite Steward: Cube
I'm rather attached to Cube. He's always saving my butt when I play Princess Maker 2. Not to mention, Cube's just an all-around nice guy.

I decided to go with Elmina on my vote. I didn't really think she would be a favorite upon her introduction, but I think I got to really liking her. She has a habit of being unintentionally funny with that airy voice of hers (when teasing or making extremely remarks). The episode focusing on her were really good and pretty emotional at times to. Part of which is interesting is how she gets to fit in with the rest after being very aloof at the start (as Touma put it). The characters with the cold father figures (e.g. Rue, Layla) always seem to be pretty interesting. Of course, this is not even mentioning that's she's really cute. :)

And the one I was mainly trouble deciding between was... Glenda (how ironic :sd: ). But she was always a lot of fun too and was there from the very beginning. She was really awesome there near the end. It would have been cool to have seen her mother. :D

And of course I like the other girls a lot too. I found Beth to be really interesting even though she was antagonistic at first. I thought the boyish demeanor on her was kind of cool.

Ah, and as far as the stewards go, Gaga always cracked me up for some reason. Belbel was my second, since she was just so danged cute.

I love all the princesses, but my favorite is...

Favorite princess: Elmina. She's so awesome!
Favorite steward: Gaga. This guy is hilarious.

Glenda seriously owned in those last few episodes. Watching her get super pissed for Yucie's sake there at the end and then talking to her at the edge of that clear wall, man...good stuff.

So far, I'm the only one who voted for Beth. I like her bitterness and hesitance. And why haven't I written a Beth/Cocoloo story yet?

It was hard to choose among the stewards, but I cast my vote for Chawoo, possibly because of just how far he'll go to stick up for Cocoloo.

I had to go with:

Favorite Princess - Glenda, she's just so damn funny.

Favorite Steward - A tough choice between Belbel and Gaga. But Belbel wins through sheer cuteness.

On a slightly off topic side-note, has Cube ever been in another series? I'm sure I've seen him somewhere else.

PPY is (very) loosely based on the Princess Maker games. If you've seen any images of those games floating around the web, I think Cube resembles the player character of one of the games(Yucie resembles the princess you have to...er...make.)

This is exactly how I voted. Beth has so much emotional depth to her, I can't help but like her. Her angry embarrassment at Cocoloo's friendship is beautiful. I very nearly voted for Gaga, since I love his maniacal devotion to Glenda, but I went with Chawoo instead. I love how his forceful personality is in complete contrast to Cocoloo's non-presence.

So, is Chawoo supposed to be a guy? Never really took note of what gender it was supposed to be. Most of the stewards are male or seem to be male anyway I guess, with the distinct exception of Belbel.

I have no idea. It was kind of hard to figure it out, since Chawoo doesn't have much phyiscal characteristics beyond, well, looking like a shapeless white shape. And the voice doesn't really give any help either.

At least now I know who the third person was that voted for Beth. I think the writers did a remarkably good job of introducing her and making her sympathetic in a very short amount of time.

Poor Balizan... seemingly the most intimidating of them all at first, but he ends up having to get rescued by the others twice. :P I think his part in Elmina's past was pretty touching, though. It's kind of interesting that the pairing between princess and steward with the most emotional backstory ends up being the ones that are more "robotic" in their personality.

I have a theory that Yucie watching urges go around in circles, I got the urge to watch this about a month ago, when someone else who was rewatching it mentioned it, I mentioned it, and someone else got the urge, eventually it'll get back to me again (in fact it is already getting to that point!)

All of this also sounds like we're just groping for an excuse to start a Yucie episode by episode discussion. With the Princess Tutu episode by episode discussion over, I guess we need to step in and start a new "Princess" ep by ep discussion.

Perhaps this needs to be a Forum Rule:
"GA must have active, at all times, a thread dedicated to an episode by episode discussion of a show with the word Princess in the title."

Heh, funny that Glenda always seems to have a completely different outfit, even when all the other girls has some kind of "standardized" outfit. She just won't conform, will she? :P

The Japanese version seems pretty good so far, though in the end, this may be the kind of show I'm more comfortable watching dubbed.

Still really enjoyable though - Maria Yamamoto is really good at making those funny little noises, something I remember her for in Hand Maid May too. Speaking of HMM, another thing to note is that Arc has the same voice as Kazuya (interesting coincidence :) ). I love Yuki Matsuoka in practically everything, so of course she's a fun Glenda and probably one of my favorites in the Japanese version. Yukari Fukui has a kind of distinct ultra-soft voice (really close to Sarah in School Rumble, though this one may be even more extreme). As for Ayako Kawasumi, I love her, though haven't got to hear too much at this point.

Watching through again (done with third disc in the collection), I can definitely reaffirm my notion that the series really seems to take off at ep. 11. It's still cute fun before then, though maybe a bit more monotonous. Perhaps I'm just biased because there's no Elmina-chan, and it's just a distinct lack of blonde angel that bothers me, though... :P

Anyway, speaking of Yucie, I think it's neat that she is a bit of a brat at times (she has a lot of similarities with Glenda in a few ways), not the usual eternally nice main heroine.

Just a small rant here, but it seems ADV's credits had quite a few mistakes in there. I can expect misromanizations of seiyuu names from any company, but here they had some rather nasty errors where they gave some VA's another VA's family name. Noriko Hidaka became "Noriko Hiramatsu", Maria Kawamura became "Maria Kaneda", and in one episode Ai Tokunaga was credited to a role that was supposed to be credited to Ai Shimizu. Really, someone involved in the Japanese credits must have been half-asleep while they were doing it :sd:

Even the episode where they go to Cocoloo's world is more about Yucie and Beth than her.

Just got past that episode again, so only a few more left to finish my second watching. Heh, I guess it's all part of her not having much of a presence. :) I noticed we don't see Cocoloo use her ability to go through the wall very often (I only remember two times, though may be more). She isn't the one to show it off, I guess. It's hilarious when she sneaks up on Beth though. :D

I finished rewatching this for the fourth time. I loved it just as much as the first three times. So who's turn is it now?

I'm done my second time now. :)

Little thing I noticed about Cocoloo's dad, the Spirit King (I knew he was supposed to be there in those last few episodes - but last time I forgot to take note of him :D ). He appears as just a book, since apparently no one can see his form. One cute thing in Yucie's little dream sequence in the end is that when everyone in the crowd was reaction (blushing, turning blue, etc.), the book was doing it as well. Have to wonder whether the book really is the Spirit King's form, if the Spirit King has some sort of magic cast on the book that makes it convey his feelings, or I'm just overthinking it and it's just for the sake of the viewer. :P Hehe... it's always fun spotting stuff like that on rewatching.

Ah, and watching Glenda get worked up there in ep. 25 is just priceless. It's cool it's for Yucie's sake when we finally get to see some kind of demonic fit from her - and then as others have mentioned, when she erects that barrier around Yucie... just makes me tear up, even though I know final outcome now. Great stuff... Better not overlook Cocoloo's contribution this time - I noticed she was the one who made the drawing that Yucie later found. ;)

Maybe I should consider watching this again one of these days. It has been quite a while since I marathoned it.

Keeping with my bad(?) habit of choosing the low key characters as my favorites, I chose Cocoloo. as for Stewards, I went with Gaga. His neurotic fawning over Glenda was always a laugh with me.

I had to put my Science Scout badge on hold for a while so I could switch to a blushing Beth avatar.

I've always liked episode 25, because it's the first time we really see Glenda become furious. Before this, we'd seen her angry, but it was always for comedic effect. But this time, her anger was real and frightening, the righteous fury of the princess of the demon world. What made it more powerful is that she wasn't angry for herself, but for what Maga Salent was doing to Yucie. And then to see her crying at the end when Yucie is on the other side of the magic wall, you really get to see the depth of her friendship with Yucie. It's just an amazingly well written show.

Well, I am not watching it now because I recently finished watching it for the third time and I have other things to watch. Many, many other things (looking over my shoulder I see the backlog pile that is threatening to topple over and crush me :sd: ).

I'm just glad it was made during the licensing blitz of a few years ago. By coincidence, I just finished watching this series over the weekend (I think I started watching it back in February).

For favorite princess candidate I picked Glenda (and for the moment pushed her to sole possession of first place in the poll). I always tend to like characters that are kind of spoiled and obnoxious; they just seem to add the right amount of spice to a series. Of course, it doesn't hurt that in the mystical realm of anime they're almost always a truly nice person once you really get to know them. Anyone who doesn't vote for Glenda simply can't fathom the elegant beauty and fantastic magical powers of the Princess of the Demon World. :D

As for stewards it was a tough call between Gaga and Belbel. In the end I chose Gaga because I found him more entertaining over the course of the series.

As for the overall show, I thought it was pretty entertaining. It dragged a little in the middle when it started getting kind of "job of the week"-ish, but the characters/interactions were amusing enough that it didn't really detract from my opinion of the show. As others have mentioned, the last couple episodes in particular were quite good.

As might be expected, most of my favorite parts were Glenda scenes. Some of the ones I can remember off the top of my head: the time when she's waiting for Yucie behind the job board (I skipped back to check and yes, you can spot her hiding behind the sign before she reveals herself); pretty much the entire episode where they have the job at the magic/alchemy store; and when she opens her graduation present.

Oh, one more thing I have to mention - the eyecatches were really great. I wish more series would do something interesting with them.
