I just watched the episode, everyone got kinda somber when the subject of the limiters came up.

Art was kinda wonky this episode, definiely will need to get touched up on the DVD.

I really hope so. It seemed like they were starting to go down that road a little bit in A's. I was convinced that Admiral Gharam was involved in a bad way with the Book Of Darkness,and i was right in a since since it was his familiars who were responsible for taking the Linker Cores of the Knights and causing the defense program to go haywire.

I don't know why i thought that, just something about the guy seemed ominous. Man remember when this show was a third grader and a ferret collecting jewel shards? :D Good times

- Fate and Signum! That was such a fun little conversation they had, and I expect great things from them in the future. It's also a sign of how far the Knights have come, being able to freely take orders from someone other than Hayate. Quite the shift from the last time we saw them (in anime form anyway).
I find it interesting Signum still calls Fate "Testarossa" even though she's presumably been a Harloawn for sometime.

Probably because after a certain point the extra power becomes dangerous and excessive in normal business.

I think as the years went by, Nanoha probably used one Starlight Breaker too many that it weaken her at a point to the brink of death. Maybe that is why Fate is so concern about her health, since Nanoha seems to have a habit of overdoing things from time to time.

That is entirely possible. Actually as far as I know, a person's "Linker Core" IS their life force, if your Linker Core is completely drained, you die.

I believe it has been mentioned in untranslated supplementary material, that unlike most Intelligent Devices, Raging Heart is ALWAYS drawing on Nanoha's magic, even when it is not strictly speaking activated. Note that it is the ONLY device we have ever seen speak when in its storage form.

Now, how this relates to Nanoha almost getting killed in a battle and being all covered in blood is another question entirely.

I get the impression that the last 10 years have been pretty quiet, mostly just training with the occasional crisis like the airport fire. Actually it seems like the girls don't really know where they want to end up in the organization, which is part of what spurns Hayate to create Mobile Section 6 in the first place. He was being somewhat facetious I think with the Starlight Breaker, but the intervening years haven't been all THAT quiet. Nanoha very nearly got herself killed somewhere between the end of A's and the A's epilogue (going theory is sometime around 8 years before StrikerS), and this most likely has something to do with Fate and Vita's concern for her. But we really have almost no information other than it was really bad. She was covered in blood and very close to dying. Vita was also completely flipping out. But I'm positive that this is a very important plot point and will be covered when the time is right.

It does regenerate after a period of time, but if it gets COMPLETELY drained, you die. The Knights intentionaly would not fully drain the Linker Cores of humans they attacked, since they knew Hayate would never, EVER approve of such a thing.

Important things we learned: All mages have limiters installed in their devices, and some especially powerful mages have limiters installed within themselves.

Nanoha and Fate are currently limited to two ranks below their actual class, making them effectively AA ranked, instead of S+ ranked. Hayate holds the key to release their limiter.

Hayate on the other hand is limited to FOUR ranks below her actual power level, making her effectively only A ranked, instead of SS rank. The key to Hayate's limiter are held by Chrono Harlaown and Carym Gracia, one or the other is needed to release the limiter.


So that would mean that all three Aces are currently operating at power/magic levels lower than what they displayed in A's, correct?

Indeed. Though they have more skill now, so the difference is probably not as great as it seems at first.

One thing the limiters also bring in is they remove the need for another upgrade to Raging Heart and Bardiche, which is nice, since another one of those would feel even more forced than the Limiter stuff.

I seem to remember something about the damage being done because it began drawing power from her before her Linker Core was sufficiently developed to provide power, which harmed her body. Her Linker Core was prevented from developing normally during of the premature drain, which is why the damage was progressive. (I went back and looked. The reference was in A's Episode 6, around 17:16.) So the harm wasn't because it was draining her Linker Core, but rather because it was consuming her body in place of the Linker Core.

Anyway, further details on Limiters.

Everyone has limiters installed in their devices (we saw these in action in the first two seasons, Axel Mode -> Buster Mode -> Excellion Mode, for example), the Forward's new devices have similar stages, but the later ones will only be unlocked when Nanoha and Fate believe they are ready for them.

Hayate, Nanoha, Fate, Vita and Signum have further limiters within their bodies, to bring MS6 down to within the deployment limit regulations. Nanoha and Fate are reduced 2.5 ranks from S+ to AA, Signum and Vita are reduced a similar amount. Hayate is reduced 4 ranks from SS to A. Presumably so the others can retain more power.

Nanoha, Fate, Vita and Signum's limiters are controlled by Hayate, Hayate's can only be released by Carym Gracia or Chrono.

Carym Gracia is the head of the Saint Church, who's headquarters is located in the independent Velkan state in Northern Midchilda. Hayate first met her 8 years ago. She and Carym have very different philosophies and goals (...but we don;t know WHAT those differences are...) they are united in the creation of MS6 and solving the Relic Case. Carym is also a member of the TSAB Board of Directors, and Hayate's direct superior.

The explanation for limiters makes complete sense: so that all the units will be on a level playing field and so no one unit will be ubre powerful in case of defection or anything like that. If Division 6 went AWOL with the power their packing, it'd take a huge contingent to take them down, imho

- New devices! No more beat up ghettoblades, time for brand new devices from Shario... I like Shario~ Wonder if they talk now...
- Oh... wow... that is awesome. Nanoha, Hayate , Fate, Signum and Vita are SO fucking hardcore that they don't just have limiters on their devices, but they themselves have limiters. In other words, Section 6 is just so much concentrated awesome that by LAW they have to hold their abilities in check or else they couldn't be one group o_O ...Wow.
- What's interesting is that Hayate was limited FOUR ranks from SS to A, while Nanoha was dropped 2.5 from S+ to AA. I guess Nanoha, as a combat instructor and front line commander has to be allowed a bit more strength than Hayate. Of course, what this means is that at some point in the series Hayate is going to have to unleash all her limiters and... try not to make the universe implode. Awesome. Seems like there's a bit of a hierarchy to remove the limiters too, with Nanoha, Fate, Signum and Vita having to get confirmation from Hayate, who needs to go to either Carim or Chrono to formalize it. This all also conveniently balances the Aces and their second-in-commands with the newbies a little.

- Woo, looks like the action starts in earnest in episode five. Hope Kyaro is okay~ It's humorous to see her and Elio holding hands jumping out of the helicopter in the preview XD

Edit: Oh, one other thing: Hayate disguising herself (or at least hiding under a cloak) when she goes to see Carim. There may be nothing at all to it, or it could be as innocent as just not wanting to draw attention to the church, but I'm assuming there's *some* reason.

While I highly doubt it actually happened, it would be oh so interesting to see that, say... Hayate was the berserker that somehow hurt Nanoha, which would be part of the reason why she's limited so severely (from SS to A!). I think they would have somehow hinted at that even a tiny bit though, if it were at all the case... so I'm not saying I actually think it happened, but there would definitely be potential in something like that happening.

Since I'm not sure which board you're talking about I can't comment much on it. I can't tell if we're talking about a case of automatic blind hatred or a simple case of just finding the new characters meh. Personally so far I like the new cast in addition to liking the old cast.

Now that I'm done with laughing, I'll actually start typing this post. Honestly that's just pathetic. Yes it's a given that new characters will/can cut into the potential screen time of the old ones, but they can also help develop the old ones at the same time.

Just imagine what the first season of Nanoha would have been like if the creators said "We better not introduce Fate. She's a new character that will take the show away from Nanoha". We would have never gotten the interaction between the two. That same thinking would have prevented the introduction of Hayate and crew. *Imagines a world without Reinforce Zwei* That world officially sucks.

Subaru doesn't have to worry about that, since she apparently doesn't wear any (well, we saw Nanoha, Fate, and Tia lose theirs, but Subaru just went straight to naked). Subaru does get some jiggle along the way, though. I suppose it's because of the target audience that Elio was the only one who didn't get naked while transforming.

I'm happy that we won't have to see those transformations as a regular occurance; they really interrupted the flow of the episode.

I wish that the mechanical designs for the series weren't so chunky. Both Fate's car and the helicopter are rather ugly.

If it was such an emergency, why couldn't Fate have just parked her car on the shoulder of the highway, and taken off from there? It seemed to be a fairly long drive to where she parked it, and that is time that could have been better spent in action. Is car theft that big of a deal in the city, or is there just a huge amount of paperwork to fill out if her car gets towed? ^_^;

Not knowing the dialogue, in episode 5 I'm presuming that Nanoha and Fate disappeared from the scene because they were clearing out more of the airborne targets, leaving the newbies to deal with the stuff on the train. They just seemed to absent from the main action, and I don't recall seeing more of the flying drones after they took down that first set. Oh well, whatever... ^_^;

To be fair, a good portion of /a/ does like it, there's just a certain contingent of people who feel that it is required that they shit up any thread about something other than a show they like.

It's more like these people haven't seen enough old school mecha to realise that the entire Nanoha series is really a homage to it. More so with StrikerS.

Speaking of changing forms. I lke Reinforce Zwei's outfit. Partially because of the one leg thing. Ie one leg being bare and the other having a long stocking. I have no idea what the fetish term for this is, but it's like the best of both worlds. A compromise of epic portions. I shall now continue to wonder if I should feel wrong about this.

Granted I couldn't make out the majority of the conversation, but I could almost imagine Subaru's device saying "Quite frankly I'm a safety net in case you screw up." :P Still whatever works in the long run. Oh yeah then there's the matter of Teana's one gun to two gun thing. I wonder if this a case of choosing between one gun at full power and two guns at half power.

Elio and Caro should definitely get together. Yeah I know it's not Yuri people. However remember in order for future members of Yuri to be out there they must be born first. So that will be their mission. Elio and Caro must create these future members. Thus everything works out in the end. In all seriousness this pairing could work with progress mainly being limited by their current ages. However that's what the "years later" thing is for.

In any case Caro continues to prove how awesome the idea of a support mage can be, but then again I'm biased since I often make use of support spells in RPGs. Plus you have characters like Elio to make decent use of those said support abilities. At least that's the hope anyway.

Those bozo's at 4chan are brain dead for not giving it a chance. I had the same fears, actually, but I love the new characters and seeing Fate and Nanoha in new roles as commanders/teachers is a refreshing experience.
It's more like these people haven't seen enough old school mecha to realise that the entire Nanoha series is really a homage to it. More so with StrikerS.

That much is certainly true, but then the question becomes how long to wait. On one hand I'd feel meh if they only happened once. Yet on the other hand I wouldn't want them over shadowing the story. So it can be a tough call.

Actually screw that. The real issue here is not how often they'll show these transformations. No the real issue is the fact we still need a longer detailed transformation scene for Hayate and Reinforce Zwei.

Both the song used in the video and the song I mentioned come from the original Pretty Cure series. The song used in the video is the opening theme to the original series. While the "Shining Star" song is an insert song for a much later episode of the first series.

In general Pretty Cure is definitely a children series. You have the mascot characters, the transformation scene, the hand to hand combat, the special attacks and so forth.

Interesting. Makes her warning to Elio about the boosting of his weapon have a whole new meaning. My Take: she boosted someone (either a mage or a dragon) way too much by accident, causing a tremendous magical reaction/explosion, causing her banishment. Besides, I find it pretty unlikely that Subaru would be part of this "Project F", since she KNOWS both her parents and all. I guess its possible, but it'd feel kinda forced considering what we know of her backstory.

Anyway, I think Dr. Spaghetti mostly be involved in the Fate/Caro/Erio side of the plot, while the Nanoha/Subaru/Teana side is a bit more uncertain at this point.

I wonder if she's only a C+ rank because she (consciously or not), holds back her own abilities because she's afraid of the same thing happening again? Afraid of being feared for her power? I'm sure she'd be extra scared after Nanoha's talk of limiters, because here too is a place where too much power is, if not something that will get you banished, still something that a close eye is kept on... At least, so I hope, because for Kyaro to actually be way better than a C+ would be megawin.
- Well well, they even need permission granted for flight. So that's why Fate has her Bardichemobile. Given how these girls were nothing but unrestrained orgies of power in 2st and A's, you have to wonder how hard to was to adjust to this very strictly regimented TSAB position. Sure, ten years on they're used to it, but device limiters, physical limiters, even needing authorization to do something as natural to them as fly... it had to be a tough transition, particularly for the Knights and Fate who were free to use their power from the moment they were created/programmed.

I... I so need so see that. BADLY.
- OH HOLY SHIT I think Kyaro just fucking matched the transformations in pure awesome. No, I think she's the highlight of this episode. She goes from doing more or less nothing so far to DRAGON SOUL SUMMON and just god damnit I am besides myself with happiness right now. I knew deep down that no Nanoha series would EVER let a little girl become irrelevant, but I never really thought Kyaro would be THIS awesome.
- And I'm actually glad to see Elio hold his own (somewhat) in the glare of Kyaro's transcendental glory. I think those two are quickly becoming one of my favorite pairs. And I think Kyaro became my new favorite newbie.

Vita and Subaru is pretty much a perfect match. Vita would never lose, of course, but those two are just one great matchup that needs to happen. I may not be as big a Subaru fan as... well pretty much every other StrikerS fan in existence (she'd actually be last at the moment of the four newbies for me), but her fighting style would be great to see go up against Vita. Well, as long as Vita held back and didn't squish her like a bug.

Vita and Subaru are a match made in heaven. Besides, Nanoha's totally not equipped to properly train Subaru, since she is by any definition totally useless in melee combat. Her time would be better served working with Teana, who's specialty is much closer to her own

Anyways...I've already watched the transformations to death from the YouTube link so I'll just say this: Fate really does look best in black. :virgin:

It cool seeing the new devices in action, even if some people had a bit of trouble getting used to them. I liked Cross Mirage the best (was that the name of Tiana's device?), but then again, I'm a fan of ranged fighters.

I liked that Kyaro (Caro? Carol? WTFev4r) was somewhat the central focus this episode. I love learning more about the character's backgrounds and hers was particularly nice. Support+Summoning=win for her.

But what we should really be talking about is how ridiculously awesome Kyaro is, and how she has the potential to be my #3 favorite Nanohaverse character ever (nobody will ever top our two leads, however). Though she has competition from Hayate and Rein.

Something is speaking the divine and awesome truth here. We should be worshipping the ground Caro walks on. Granted I already had Caro established as my initial favorite of the newbies. Which is the term I use for the character I like the most before watching/playing something.

However when it came to the first two seasons my favorite ended up being Hayate and I have a strong liking for Reinforce Zwei. She's the best intelligent device ever created. Cute Girl? Check. Ability to henshin? Check. Heck remember there were a bunch of broken devices around her.

Which gives the indication that Reinforce Zwei can beat stuff up. Either that or she was following the path of destruction left behind by one of the others. It's hard to say for certain, but for some reason I think it would be cool to see Reinforce Zwei fighting for a short bit.

In proper storytelling, for a character to be a double agent like that, you can't get a lot of their inner thoughts. Using inner monologue (which by definition is supposed to be frank, unless the character is mentally imbalanced or has multiple personalities) to mislead the audience is pretty much the epitome of bad writing.

But as you say, they could be very conflicted about it, which allows much more leeway. Still, five episodes in I think we'd have seen some kind of hint at that, even something subtle. I don't think we've been given that yet though.

It is possible, of course, that they're a sort of sleeper agent, not even aware themselves of their true mission, but I think Tiana and Subaru have been together too long for that to feel anything other than really, really forced.

What could happen is that Dr. Spaghetti finds a way to control those created from Project F, but I doubt it. So, no, I'm not expecting any of the newbies to be on the side of the enemy.

Besides, who needs a double-cross in Mobile Section Six when you have the Church at the writers' disposal? =P

Note the crosses on Teana's hair bands. Her dress design is black, like those of the Church. One of my possible theories is that she is part of the church. Also, I see it a bit differently than you: I don't think we really have seen inside Teana's head. She comes off to me as being very distant and reserved, holding herself back from the others, especially Subaru. She's come to care about Subaru, but still she holds back for some reason.

Both Subaru and Ginga have pretty obvious attachment issues, though they manifest in different ways. As far as I can tell from the manga, the two of them are the ONLY friends each other has.

Anyway, I find the idea of Teana being a plant kinda...iffy. It would require some AMAZINGLY long range planning on someone's part. Also, if any of the existing TSAB is going to start a conflict with the rest, its the Velkans and the Saint Church, which as far as I can tell is a Velkan organization.

So it'd just be really odd for them to plant Teana, as a low level Midchildan user on the vague off chance she might someday be somewhere important.

There's limiters built into the Forward's devices, preventing them from using too much magic. But yes, she doesn't have an internal limiter like the Aces and Knights, but thats because of regulatory issues, not power control issues.

After computer issues, internet issues, and a general lack of time I finally got around to watching episode 4 and 5.

The transformation scenes were made of epic win except for Tiana who got shafted. It was unique, yes, but we only saw her reflection on the damn card and not the loving detail the other older girls got. Elio's was fine because he's a boy and, frankly, I (and probably everyone else here) was not interested in seeing watching him transform. Tiana better get a better transformation scene later.

Caro and Fried were awesome. I hope to see them kick major ass later.

Caro and Tiana are tied for my favorite new characters. I just can't choose between them. I hope Tiana gets the backstory and character development she deserves.

At this point, it seems everyone else is done with discussing 5 and moving on to episode 6, which I won't see until Friday or Saturday. Goddamn these delays between the initial airing and decent quality raws with subs. It seems like a waste to bother commenting on anything else, so carry on with the episode 6 discussion. Maybe I'll be able chime in before everyone else is busy with episode 7.

I thought Tiana's transformation sequence was just fine, speaking as a Tiana fan. At least we still got the step-by-step clothes strippage before Cross Mirage got in the way. :P

Wheee....this took a bit longer than usual (i'll be posting about 7 later today...), but anyway, some interesting revelations.

Subaru's ancestors did originate on Earth (Non-Administered Planet 97) but she's never been there, and doesn't really know anything about it. Elio was raised by the TSAB for as long as he can remember. Some references to how Fate cannot let a child in need go, and how she herself was rescued by "warm hands".

It seems the Type-3 Gadget Drones are powered by Jewel Seeds (or something similar) and the drones are manufactured by one Dr. Jail Scaglietti, a class 1 wanted dimensional criminal who Nanoha and Fate have been after for quite some time. And apparently they know that he knows who they are. It also seems that he only has partial control over the drones once they are let loose. Its also unclear just how much connection he has to Lutecia and Zest/Festa.

Additionally, Ginga will be assisting MS6 in investigating smuggling routes, and will be given her own version of Mach Caliber in return.

Blush more please~~ It seems like Elio's childhood (growing up under special protection at the main office) is something that is a bit taboo to talk about, but he doesn't mind much that Subaru mentioned it. Fate was always there for him, and so he remembers it fondly, rather than as something to be ashamed of.

- Hayate asks Genya for help in investigating smuggling routes, for which purpose Ginga will be working with Fate, who is clearly an idol of hers. Now we have both the Nakajima sisters idolizing the two main characters, heh. And for the purposes of the investigation, Rein says Ginga will get a new device, like Subaru's, like we had heard before.

I think Vita has already mentioned that she considers herself Nanoha's personal bodyguard once before. I'd like the writers to reinforce their relationship a bit at somepoint too for the benefit of those who wouldn't have read the manga. They didn't exactly love each other in A's. To me, that came across more as...uh....backshadowing. Nanoha's accident keeps being mentioned around here, and that wasn't the first time that Vita mentioned something about protecting Nanoha. It all seems to me as if it's related to whatever it was that happened to Nanoha.
Reading up on the summary of episode 7 from one blogger, I'm speculating that during some training/test run, Vita went berserk/did something reckless which lead to the bit from the A's to StrikerS manga. Hence why, to make up for nearly killing Nanoha, she's now her personal bodyguard. And it also explains why she ripped into Tiana for doing something reckless that nearly got Subaru hurt badly. Well that's my theory on what actually happen back then.
