Regular edition has english subs and dub in addition to the Japanese. Multilingual edition adds Japanese DTS and several other languages, plus a second extras disc. Nothing is said about english subs on the collector's ed though so buy that one at your own risk.

According to CDJapan (http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=VWDZ-8106) the Special Edition will carry Japanese, English, French, Korean, Mandarin, and Cantonese subtitles.

Yes, but the special edition doesn't have Japanese audio and english subs on the same disc. The subtitles on disc 2 will most likely be pure dubtitles only. Ghibli did this for one of their earlier DVD releases as well that had a multi-lingual special ed. It's easier to see the soundtrack and subtitle breakdown on Neowing:
http://www.neowing.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=VWDZ-8106
So basically if you're a sub fan, get the regular edition. If you're a dub fan get either. If you're a crazy ghibli sub fan, get both :) .
EDIT: Here's the breakdown of the special/multilingual edition:
Disc 1 main movie:
Japanese DD 2.0
Japanese 6.1 DTS-ES
No subtitles
Disc 2 multilingual disc of the main movie:
English DD 2.0
French DD 2.0
Korean DD 2.0
Mandarin DD 2.0
Cantonese DD 2.0
Subtitles:
Japanese
English
French
Korean
Mandarin/Chinese simplified
Cantonese/Chinese traditional
Discs 3 and 4 are extras discs and there's no mention of the language used, but assume they're straight Japanese stereo only as usual.

Why would the sub be different between the 2 versions ? i believe that it will be similar to Howle's release.
...English dub?
I have to wonder whos doing the dub. Disney, even tho it wont be getting a US release for a while? Or someone else?
Any way, preordered.

Thanks for the heads up Skywise. Overall, I would have to say that the extras for the collector's edition of this Ghibli release are awfully weak compared to previous movies. I'm going with Regular Edition.

The regular edition is the same as Howl's in that it has both English sub and dub. What's new here is that the special/multilingual edition has been solicited as not having a Japanese audio track on the second disc, unlike Howl's which did. AV Watch also corroborates that info. Hopefully it's an error and they really do mean to include Japanese on disc 2, but until some kind of information to that effect is released this is what the Japanese text says and I'm sticking to it :) .
What you can do is send a mail to CDJapan and ask them to check with Buena Vista for clarification.

Already did and here is there reply:
"We looked into it, and find out that the 2nd disc
have the Japanese Audio 2.0"
So i guess we can buy the SE with ease now :)

Same here, except my first is Mind Game. Only Yesterday is another Japanese disc I may get some day, along with another title that I can't recall the name of ("Train" might be in the title). A review (not by Chris) was posted recently.

Count me in as being interested in this. Since we're not likely to see an R1 release any time soon, it's nice that there will be a dub and subtitles available. This would be the first R2 purchase I'll make where I can actually understand what it is they are saying :sd:

Excellent timing!
I'll be in Japan that week, so now I know at least one thing that I'll be coming home with. :D

Upon further investigation, it's not Train Mman/Densha Otoko that I was thinking of. It was Beyond the Train Tracks.

I'll probably get the regular edition. Can anyone suggest a good place to order this from? I've been to CDJapan and YesAsia sites before, would these be fine or are there other sites with better pricing and/or shipping rates?

Either place is fine to order from.
I used to recommend Amazon Japan, but their shipping rates are now among the worst. The only advantage to AmJp is that if you preorder, you can get a 25% preorder discount that will offset the high shipping cost. The only downside is that you have to deal with the occasional vagaries of DHL, their international shipper.
But this is a hit and miss thing. So long as you aren't making a large order (over $200), you won't get hit by customs fees. And people's experiences with them have varied wildly. There was an old thread in Retail dedicated to this, and there was even a more recent thread here in R2 about the situation.
Those are about the best options available.

I'm still debating on whether or not to pick up the special edition. While it would be nice, I really don't need it. Plus nothing screams out for me to get it either at this point.

Thanks for the information :) . I would consider the Special Edition if it had subtitles on the disc with the DTS sound, but it looks like it's only on the multi-language disc. It will be interesting to see who they went with for the dub.

My Amazon JP orders are normally in the $250+ to 350 range... never hit with DHL tax before and thats even on the orders they use express.
How long does DHL take to tax ya? Seems weird they dont ask for it when they deliver the package.

would the subs be dubtitles or proper subtitles?
is there a blu-ray version coming out as well?
I'd like to know of there are special differences between the LE version of the normal DVD (http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=VWDZ-8104) and the Special Edition (http://www.cdjapan.jp/detailview.html?KEY=VWDZ-8106) considering the SE contains more extras - but are "Limited edition includes bonus artwork archive, theatrical feature," from the LE included in the SE, too?

I don't see why a Japanese DVD would have dubtitles but saying that, the subs on Brave Story read like dubtitles even though there was no English dub included so...

Some of the Ghibli R2 releases have dubtitles. Totoro comes to mind. It surprises me that it doesn't happen more often, due to the specter of eikaiwa (dubtitles let you listen to and read the same thing; heck, I've used scenes from Totoro in my classes for this very reason.).
By the way, I see some of you have faith unshakable in Ghibli... I saw this movie in theaters, though, and I say that if you don't need subtitles, your money is probably better spent on "Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo". "Gedo Senki" was pretty enough, and there's also a nice song, but oh, the plot holes! Ursula K. LeGuin was none too pleased with it either; Google a bit, and you can find her comments.
Another thing that makes me reluctant to purchase this is the way Goro Miyazaki dragged his daddy issues into the public square during the hype over the film. I'm sorry, but just because the media asks you about him 5,000 times doesn't mean you have to sling mud at your father. That was a private, family issue, and none of our business.
Anyway, sorry to be so negative, but managed expectations are in order here, I think.

I have to agree. I saw this movie last year the day it was released and I was a little dissapointed. I finally got to watch a Ghibli movie in a movie theatre in Japan on it's release date but it sure as hell was no Sen to Chihiro or Howl. I am looking forward to watching it again though and I know my Japanese has improved alot in the past year so I will understand it better.

"Read like dubtitles"? How is that? Did the subs contain SFX cues like [bird chirps] or something like that?

I saw this in cinematic release last week... the subs are "proper".
You can tell it's the same lot that do most of Buena Vista's Ghibli stuff in Japan... the same slightly "painted" sub typeface (by Sony, I think), and I think translation overseen by Steve Alpert.
I don't recall any egregious Engrish either, although I tend to gloss over such stuff, especially if it's just obvious typos.
As far as the movie itself goes... I'll buy it. It's solid, without being a masterpiece.

If it has a dub, sign me up!
Interesting. This make me hope that the dub will be a standard Buena Vista job too.
