i will give it a try but i am assuming people will be lining up at 5:30am still
it baffles me we are almost 5 months past launch and store shelves are still empty. i just don't understand :(

It's probably because of all the non-gamers Nintendo's targeting, who (mistakenly?) believe that, with a name like Wii, it has to be a sex toy.
I keep telling myself that I'm going to wait for the price to go down, but the Wii is pretty cheap as is. Oh, and it's not like I can find one in the first place... I just wish that they had something out on the market that will enable Japanese games to be playable. I wanna play Bleach! :/
Thanks for the head's up though. I'll pass by to see if there are any crazies waiting out that early.

I found one a month ago at a local store, so I buy it! Later that day Walmart has one, then that night I get a call from a guy who was selling his.
Who of thought it, I look for one for 3 months, then one day I have access to 3 of them.
I have not seen any more since. Started playing Paper Mario last night, it rocks!!!

Nintendo is short shipping to keep up the demand. They said they are not....ya right.
I've seen the Wii for sale once at Target. They had about 20 of them. That was 3 months ago. They are impossible to find around here. We'll see about Worst Buy.

short shipping is such a stupid idea. all it does is frustrate gamers like me, 5 months of waiting
i understand if i really wanted one, i could line up at 5am but i already did that at Launch 5 months ago, i'm not doing it again
i just want a stupid Wii :(

Wow. Several months after release and gamers are still trying to find them. It's hard to believe that they are still selling so well, considering that aren't that many big games on it yet.

Thanks for the notice. I can't believe I haven't been able to find a Wii yet, but since I can't afford one either, I guess that's not such a bad thing :sd: . I may go on that Sunday, but no way I'm waiting in line like some people might be planning.

I seriously doubt they're short shipping Wii's.
They've sold six million of the things, after all.
They just can't keep them in stock because it's a damned good system that has far more broader appeal than either the PS3 or 360.

Seeing as more people have bought 360's thus far thats a fanboy statement if I ever heard one.
I owned a Wii day 1. Wasn't my thing. Bored the hell out of me. Friend was looking for one and I went ahead and hooked him up instead of trying to reap a profit or something. I haven't regretted it. Not for a single moment.

Of course there's no need to mention that the reason the 360 has sold more is the fact that it was released about a year before the Wii.

Back in late January, I stumbled on to this site (http://wii.findnearby.net/) and got a tip on when the nearby Walmart was getting a shipment in, and that's pretty much how I finally got a Wii. Looks like the site isn't getting as much updating for various reasons, but it might still be worth checking out.

Doesn't look like it; wii.findnearby.net does google maps plotting around whatever zip code you enter so you can see who's selling near you (eBay and Amazon), and back when they were still getting retail store shipment info they plotted that on the map as well.
From their site:
To clear up any concerns about why we are no longer updating the site ourselves: Because there is no more good and reliable information. In the first few months after the release, many retailers would often hold their wii inventory across all stores to hold a chain-wide sake on a particular date (usually they were Sundays). But, now, a few months after launch, most stores are just selling them as they get them, or decide on their own selling schedule.
So, this is why we turned to you, the community, to help us. During our first few months of operation, most of the information we received came from you, the users who visited our website. So, now you all have a direct outlet to share that information. Simply click on the store in your area which you’ve visited and share what you found out. So, why not be a hero, call up a store (we provide you with the store phone numbers), and see if you can get some information to share. Or, if you recently went to a store and had no luck, tell us when you went, you, you might at least save some poor guy a fruitless trip to the mall.
So now they're counting on people reporting whether they've seen Wiis at their local retail stores.
Fwiw, I've heard some people had better luck at the ebGames/Gamestop and Toys R Us stores way out in suburbia rather than the big mall Best Buys.

Ain't no "what if" about it, at least right now.
I can go to BB, any time, any day, and get either a 360 or a PS3.
I cannot do so for the Wii.
Heck, they even have trouble keeping the frigging accessories in stock: wiimotes, nunchucks, and especially classic controllers.
That can change; the 360 Elite coming out, and the PS3 maybe being forced into a premature price reduction.

Stock and sales are entirely different things. Think about it this way. A company could ship the stores 200 units every other week. The store might sell 20 or 40, or even 300 on holiday weeeks, but the 300 would be assisted by the influx in inventory they've been building up.
Now suppose the big N ships to the stores only 20-40 units ever other week. They sell out in a heartbeat, but in terms of quantity, not necessarily matching.
It'll be interesting to see if the Elite does anything for MS's sales. As for the console war itself, there's no denying that Nintendo is positioned well, especially if you're into J-games. It's pretty much gotta be leading that market in terms of units sold. Hope the third party developers are starting to take it serious, but it'll unfortunately be a while before we see that start to bear any fruit. Not that that's much different in Sony's case either.

Thanks to your tip, I was able to get a Wii on Sunday. I showed up an hour before the store opened, and there were about 10 people in front of me. By the time BB opened, there were about 20 people in line total. An employee said that they had gotten over 30 Wiis in.

A lot of stores got Wiis in on Sunday. I actually saw a few Wiis at Circuit City when I went to pick up Pokemon Diamond and Pearl at 2pm. I was shocked some were still in stock that late after store opening. However, they were sold while I was there. :sd: I would've bought one for a friend who has been looking if they hadn't of sold out.

Then it will also be awhile before you download the Wii Opera web browser, be able to use the Everybody Votes channel, Weather channel, News channel, download VC games (no Romance of the 3 Kingdoms IV for you), etc....not to mention download the important Wii system updates you need to download (which is why I got mine online ASAP - hopefully they've taken care of the SD card issue with the latest systems). :)

It may take a little while for the arm to get used to playing the Wii, particularly games like Wii Sports.
Not all games are very physically intense, however. I could play Zelda and Trauma Center for hours without getting tired. You just need to sit properly and relax (I was surprised when I realized how tense I normally sit when playing video games).

Originally you weren't able to save on the SD cards (not that it mattered much at launch). The update was available at launch though so if you could get online you just had to download the firmware upgrade. I'm pretty sure it shouldn't be an issue now though.
I like the old strap on mine as well, I think people were just too rough with the Wii remotes.

My bigger problem actually is getting motion sickness. I'm not having the issue with Paper Mario, but with Super Mario 64 on the VC and Twilight Princess, I'm either getting headaches or nauseated when I play. I really hate this and it's been a problem with some games since the N64 first came out.

That's so bizarre. I guess it's the 3D environment and moving cameras. The only friend I've had who got motion sickness playing video games, had trouble with the wobbling tetrads in The Next Tetris, so I have no idea about it. It doesn't seem all that different from watching something on the television, though.
If I'd had to give up Twilight Princess for my own good health, I'd be pretty bummed out. That game's too much fun.
My bigger problem actually is getting motion sickness.
That sounds like "simulation sickness", a type of motion sickness that seems to affect different people in different ways. A friend of mine had it; the first time we tried to play Goldeneye together, after less than five minutes, she was so sick that she had to go lay down. Other games were fine, it was just the first-person perspective that set it off.
There doesn't seem to be a whole lot of information about it, but some people say that keeping the room dark or turning down the brightness or sound on the TV helps.

Sounds like the same problem I have with first person shooters. I also have it too a lesser extent with 3rd person shooters like Gears, but first person ones can really get to me. It really sucked when I took a job that had me testing a first person shooter. I fought through it for three days and then it was only mildly neausous inducting the rest of the way.

For those of you arguing about who's selling the most consoles, the 1Q profits have been announced by most major companies and the resulting articles are pretty clear. There's hundreds on this topic.
One Article (http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/ap/fn/4750935.html)
TOKYO — Booming sales of the popular Wii and DS game machines lifted Nintendo Co.'s earnings 77 percent in the latest fiscal year as the Japanese gamemaker held its own against bigger rivals Sony and Microsoft.
Okay, that's profit, we know the other companies are selling their consoles at a loss while Nintendo is actually profiting from the sales.
The Wii has pummeled its rivals going head-to-head in next-generation video game consoles like the Sony Corp.'s PlayStation 3, which has been plagued by production problems, and Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360, which has sold sluggishly outside of the U.S.
Here are some Wii numbers:
Nintendo said it sold 5.84 million Wii machines worldwide in the five months since its release late last year, 2.37 million in the Americas, and 2 million in Japan. The company said it expected to sell a further 14 million Wii units in the fiscal year ending in March 2008.
I also looked up sales figured for PS3 and XBox360 and found this (http://www.vnunet.com/vnunet/news/2188407/nintendo-top-gen-sales):
March figures for game console sales in the US show that Nintendo's Wii has once again beaten Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Sony's PlayStation 3.
According to the estimates from market research company NPD the consoles sold 259,000, 199,000 and 130,000 units respectively.
Unfortunately for Wii fans, there's also some sad news (http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/gaming/a45721/wii-shortages-to-continue-into-2009.html)
As consumers struggle to buy a Wii console due to continued shortages, senior analyst Billy Pidgeon believes Nintendo will have problems until 2009.
"I'd like to see Wii hardware shipping in larger quantities or mass market consumers may cool on it. Having said that, I don't believe supply will meet demand for the Wii until 2009," Pidgeon told Home Media Magazine.
If someone could link a source for total console sales for life of console, that would be a nice statistic to have.
If someone could link a source for total console sales for life of console, that would be a nice statistic to have.
Well, there's always VGchartz, but lately I've heard people say it's innacurate. I'm not sure why.
http://www.vgchartz.com/ (http://www.vgchartz.com)
If you don't trust VGchartz, have a thick skin, and don't mind diving into a pit of rabid fanboys, there's an admin at NeoGAF who has access to the US NPD numbers and posts the results every month. Word is that he's legit, and that the site actually ended up making a deal with the NPD.
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=151743
According to his numbers, these are the total units sold from Launch-to-March07 in the US for all consoles:
360 - 5.227m
Wii - 2.094m
PS3 - 1.194m
DS - 10.393m
PSP - 7.256m
And these were the US console sales for March alone:
1. Nintendo DS 508K
2. PlayStation 2 280K
3. Wii 259K
4. Xbox 360 199K
5. PlayStation Portable 180K
6. Game Boy Advance 148K
7. PlayStation 3 130K
8. GameCube 22K

Got mine at a Circuit City. Of course, me being Mr. Foresight decided to stand outside for three hours without bringing my iPod or anything to do. So that was a cold boring time. The best thing I've seen so far has to be while I was watching someone else play tennis, they swung wildly at the ball and their Mii flew over the barrier into the crowd. It was hilarious. I'm pretty disappointed with Paper Mario though, I was expecting more then a platformer with RPG elements.

just an update for whoever cares
yesterday morning, April 27th, every Futureshop and Bestbuy in Vancouver got a big shipment of Wii's. what is more interesting is that some people were lining up at 8am to find not a single person at the store!!! hopefully this is a sign that the ridiculous demand in Vancouver is dying down. there are many stories of people waking up at 10am, driving down to the store after opening, and walking in to pick up a Wii.
unfortunately, i had to work yesterday but if we get another shipment next week, i am for sure getting one. i am so excited!!!

There is going to be another Wii promotion next Sunday, May 6th. Stores should be getting more shipments in this week to sell on Sunday.
