View Full Version : What anime genre floats your boat the most?

Me, I used to like any mecha show, but I've seen so much, it's getting to the point where I actively AVOID mecha.
Right now, I'm pretty much a sucker for just about any romance or school-setting shows. I should point out that when I say romance, I mean non-harem types.
Space opera is also always something I can watch.
Fantasy is the genre in anime I least like, at least the swords and sorcery type. Which is funny, because I absolutely love most fantasy novels. No surprise that my favourite fantasy anime (Twelve Kingdoms) plays out more like a novel (after all, it WAS based on novels) than a typical fantasy anime.
I also didn't realize how much I usually enjoy sports anime. A lot of people don't go in for that "train hard and play with heart" stuff, but as a general sports fan, I can relate to these cliches.

I'm looking for something new. Any genre is fine by me, as long as they make it feel fresh. Although I find it hard to believe I'd enjoy a harem show...

I'm a harem fan mostly. I also like a lot of fluff, comedies and drama.

Definitely hard to say, I like so many genres. I'll generally at least try anything set in a school that involves some mix of comedy, romance, or whatever(harem included), but that doesn't mean I'll like it.
Maybe if we can call shoujo-ai/yuri a genre (which it isn't, but whatever), then I'd go with that. If a show has strong shoujo-ai elements, explicit or implied, I am much more likely to like it than I would if it did not have such elements. Or rather, I'm moe likely to like it more, because I tend to like most shows I see, generally.

I like shows with a nice mix of action/comedy such as Fighting Spirit, FMP!, Outlaw Star, etc.

Historical, Sci-Fi, Horror, Psychological,
Philosophical, Fantasy and Mecha...
I'm more prone to buying those series..

I like psychological stuff too, but there's a certain way of doing it I prefer over others. I tend to enjoy Hideaki Anno's approach, but I'm not as into the Lain-Boogiepop ones.

I do have a particular love for sci-fi, drama and tragedy. Others of interest being philosophical, thriller, martial action, romance, slice-of-life, and sports :P

That is probably my favorite overall genre - shows that play games with your mind. Drama, science fiction, fantasy, and slice of life are high on the list, as are shows that appeal to my weakness for cute. My collection ranges from Texhnolyze to Sugar, so I've got a spot on my shelf for anything that interests me, no matter the genre.

What genre floats MY boat? Any, if it's GOOD! Conversely, I can't stand generic "cash in" crap where they are more concerned with half-assed pandering with no heart or feeling put into it, I.E. most harem shows ('cept Tenchi. Tenchi rocks.) I can love sports shows like Princess Nine and Aim for the Ace! I can love 80's mech shows like Gundam, VOTOMS, GALL Force, and Dunbine. I can love something as macho as "Berserk", or something as feminine as "Fruits Baskets", or "Princess Tutu". I can watch "Sailor Moon", "Now and Then, Here and There", "Planetes"' "Gatchaman", "Giant Robo", or "Azumanga Daioh" and enjoy myself equally with all of them. Basically anything where it's clear that the people behind it were really giving it their all, and trying to make you have a good time, even if the shows themselves aren't always perfect.

Well, my favourite genre is fantasy. (I think most of the high-profile fantasy shows are based on novels, not that there are many of them in total; I also like the shows that aren't based on novels such as Berserk and Fushigi Yuugi.)
There isn't very much fantasy so aside from that I also like cute, warm-feeling, for-want-of-a-better-word 'moe' shows - definitely not anything with fanservice. Aria is the most obvious example; Cardcaptor Sakura; etc.
Shoujo drama (or I'd add /josei just so that Honey and Clover counts).
Realistic/near-future SF that doesn't heavily feature giant robots (GitS:SAC, Lain, Technolyze).
'Intelligent', original stuff in general (Haibane Renmei; Perfect Blue and most of the rest of Satoshi Kon's work; etc).

Hmm...my recent tastes kind of snuck up on me. I really didn't even notice how I was until a week or 2 ago. So how should I put it? My favorite, number 1 series to date is One Piece. I'm an avid Bleach fan. Death Note is one of my favorite manga. Busou Renkin is probably the most brilliantly hillarious if not utterly corny series I've seen in a while and I loved it. One of my favorite romance series that I've read is Ichigo 100%. My Naruto fix has been revived with the start of Shuppuden. And I'm currently getting into Claymore which I think is pretty cool. I guess I should also state that about 7 years ago, there was a time when I wouldn't miss an episode of DBZ on CN. :(
No matter how you look at it, I seem to be an SJ fanboy. It one "genre" that tends to catch the most slack from people, especially the episode counts and what not. Oh well, it's not that those are the only shows I watch, as I tend to watch a wide variety. I'm also not afraid to try anything. It's just that those series could all be easily grouped together. There are a ton of series that I think are better than anything I've listed, but when it comes to pure, ridiculous_grin_from_the_begginning_to_the_end_of an_episode entertainment value, then this "genre" wins.

I myself have my own preferences for psychological and philosophical shows. I don't really like those that are too acid-trippy, as I couldn't really get a feel for Lain and Boogiepop. After a certain point of mindfucktitude, I can no longer associate with the characters, and characters are the most important thing for me. As such, I was able to take Haibane Renmei and Texhnolyze much better.

Innocent misspelling or Freudian slip? What do you, the people at home think? :sd: :D
The most? Usually the trifecta of comedy, drama, and romance (including harem). But I can find titles of value in pretty much any genre. Maybe not sports, and usually not mecha — but there are gems among those genres as well.

I'm willing to try just about any show if it contains overflowing amounts of sillyness. Sometimes I will refer to the show as being "on crack".
Examples of this type of show for me are
1) Azumanga Daioh
2) Full Metal Panic: Fummofu?
3) Excel Saga and Puni Puni Poemi
Combine absurd amounts of silly with awesome parody and I will definately drift towards those shows with reckless abandon. Granted, that doesn't always make those shows good, but I do drift towards that particular subset of shows.

That's the main drawback to the Boogiepop anime, and the reason I ended up not liking it once I'd read the novels; the novel characters are so much more rounded than anyone comes across in Boogiepop Phantom. (My point being; try the novels! You'll like them better!)
And just as the character of Lain allowed me to get through that, the total absence of anyone remotely interesting led me to give up on Texhnolyze after a few episodes...

I guess SciFi, fluffy comedy (with or without fanservice) and slice of life are my three favorite genres, but I watch just about anything (except I don't watch too much mecha--don't hate it, but there has to be something else to it beyond giant robots pummeling each other).
Drama depends. I really enjoyed Rumbling Hearts (Kiminozo).

I suppose I could say it's magical girl for me (if that is considered a genre). Not because I necessarily like everything magical girl (there are some even there I don't like as much), but mainly because they tend to have the kind of mix I like. Cuteness and lightheartedness on one end, great comedy on another, on yet another end excellent characters and character development, and lastly even great dramatic moments. Things I like, whether they're magical girl or not, tend to have some of those elements.

For some odd reason it's still harem. No idea why though :sd: .
While I'll watch pretty much anything interesting, I'd have to go with "slice of life". I just love shows like Emma, Kamichu, Genshiken, Honey & Clover and things like that. But I have wide tastes, but thats almost a instant win for me.

Drama and/or romance. Or romantic comedies if not harem... both with an adult cast, PLEASE! I'm so sick of school yard shows.
Examples of what I love right now:
Maison Ikkoku

Emma (manga)

There's no way I can deny the fact cute girls will often motivate me to at least check out a few episodes of a series. I'm rather fond of what is often called the bishoujo look. Granted this works even better if the actual show is enjoyable and part of a style I tend to enjoy. So I guess the first thing to mention would be Bishoujo series for lack of a better term.
I have a definite fondness for Magical Girls either as part of a show or the focus of a show. If I'm watching a show and Magical Girls are involved you've probably discovered part of the reason I enjoy the show. It's no secret I definitely like Pretty Cure. And heck I've been over the past several days working on watching the first season of Futago Hime noting that I already finished the second. Err don't ask. Either way I've seen at least 32 episodes of Futago Hime Season 1 now so yeah there is progress being made in the realm of magical girl worship.
I definitely have a fondness for shows like Strawberry Marshmallow, Manabi Straight, Lucky Star and so forth. They may not be the exact same type of show, but they do give off a certain universal feel that definitely helps a lot. I guess it's the whole Slice of Life feel they give in addition to whatever else.

I can enjoy a genre if the storyline/characters/development are entertaining enough. If I had to specify something, it would probably be in the area of comedy with a mix of action.

Favorites: SPACE OPERA!, fantasy, action/comedy, slice of life, and of course, shoujo-ai/yuri.
Dislikes: Tournament-style, excessively drama-laden shoujo (especially self-inflicted drama), harem (unless done very, very right), mecha for the sake of mecha only. I guess a better way to summarize my dislikes would be to say I tend to dislike shows whose theme is very one-dimensional (meaning that it doesn't really have any other element to it other than its primary theme).
I realize some of my above genres aren't exactly genres per-se, but anyone who's familiar with anime will recognize some of these themes as common enough to practically warrant their own genre.

Yeah, I think most people would consider quality a chance, but I think some people are more forgiving of some genres than others. They'd watch a mediocre show because they enjoy the genre. For instance, I don't think Marmalade Boy is anywhere close to "art". But I love its crazy unabashed soap opera nature, so I can dig it.

I like Slice of Life a lot, but I'm not so fond of those sentimental ones where they try to simulate a "warm" feeling throughout. I like sweetness, but more and more I find that I don't buy into "feel good" moments unless there was significant hardship prior to it. I guess I like to see my characters earn their happiness.
For example, I finished Maison Ikkoku this weekend and while there were certain parts of it which were definitely repetitive and annoying, when the final 12 episodes came about, those "sweet" moments were incredibly rewarding. The characters had went through a lot to get to that point, and it wasn't all lighthearted cuteness and sunshine during the journey either.
To me, sweetness and warmth needs to be earned. You have to fight for it. THat's when they're most affecting.

Love science fiction, horror, urban fantasy, weirdness but anything with a heart, brain and soul are good especially if it tries something new or different or interesting that can actually surprise somewhat jaded old me. And 'dark and twisted psychological stuff' says the guy in the mirror who strangely looks a lot like me.

Just about everything Shojo evolved past the 5-yr old brainwashing (aka all but some of the more inanely sweet shows).
Comedy shows (except harems and other lame excuses for base otaku fan service), mystery, romantic dramas (cookie points for love triangles), slice-of-life, bishies, shonen-ai are usually on my list.
Usually avoiding shonen jump and mecha like the plague, any anime with related card merchandise, anime with too much gore and/or tasteless stuff, hentai, and anime with maids (exception Emma).
Now and then though, based on recommendations of others that I know have similar tastes, I'll check out an anime outside of my usual genres but that's probably only like 1-2/yr.

Fluffy comedies and Bishoujo shows mostly. Slow developing romance is a plus too. Slice of life can be good too. I generally like shows that are character driven and upbeat...oh and CUUUUUUUUTE :neko: .
I generally don't like dark angstfests, mecha, and action shows, and I won't touch horror with a ten-foot pole.

While I can and am able to enjoy a wide range of genres of anime, the vast majority of shows that I seek out tend to be the cutesy, light-hearted, moe and/or slice-of-life variety. Shows such as Azumanga Daioh, Cardcaptor Sakura, Sugar: A Little Snow Fairy, and more recently, Hidamari Sketch and Kamichama Karin are some of the better examples of shows that I overwhelmingly prefer. These are the kinds of shows that got me into anime in the first place.
I also enjoy some much darker shows, almost entirely on the opposite end of the spectrum but they often contain some of the above elements that I mentioned as well. Alien Nine, Elfen Lied and When They Cry - Higurashi are currently the best examples. I've felt some very strong feelings of depression, paranoia, uneasiness and moe from these three shows.

I love magical girl anime. Four out of my Top 5 anime are mahou shoujo; the fifth, Utena, is partially inspired by the genre. I've got at least 90% of the magical girl series that have been released in R1, and about 30 R2 DVDs.

I could say nearly the same thing about the sadder and more tragic elements of a show. Since I prefer to actually get to know the cast first and have a basis for why I should care about what happens. I guess in the end some shows provide a balance while others are more focused. Thus each having their own specific purpose.
Really well done steampunk shows like Escaflowne really grab onto my attention. It has to generate the right mood first, and bonus points for working school girls in somehow without it seeming weird.

That's a tough question. I like a variety of genres. It's probably easier for me to list my dislikes. I really don't like harems, cuteness, and shows loaded with fanservice. I'm more drawn to mature and serious shows such as Samurai Champloo, Texhnolyze, and Ghost in the Shell.

I prefer shoujo, slice of life, and romance anime usually. Things like Fruits Basket, Marmalade Boy, Kaleido Star, Kyo Kara Maoh, etc. top my favorites list.
I also like the kinds of shows that require thinking, such as Death Note.
And if yaoi counts, it's definitely one of my favorites.

I'm going to use the "M" word . . . Magicalgirls . . . .
Ok . . . that's not really the "M" word . . . but I like it.
Depending on your definition, "Moe" Although that could apply to the Magical Girl genre . . . Go to Wikipedia and look . . . . (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moe_%28slang%29)
I like the opinion about "Moe" attributed to Ken Akamatsu (http://matthew.animeblogger.net/archives/2005/07/20/wednesday_notes_akamatsu-sensei_talks_moe.php)
I will have to plead guilty to liking that fanservice-y stuff too . . . I have a whole website dedicated to the cute, sexy and scantily-clad . . . It's kind of amazing the detail (almost lovingly) some of these illustrators can display . . . but I'm swerving a bit off topic.
I'm open to just about anything . . . except blatant porn. Sex is just not a spectator sport.

Saying what I like and what I dislike is actually pretty tough.
The first thing that sprung to mind is that I didn't like shoujo or josei titles to much (spelling?). But, there are a few titles of both that I do like, so thats not entirely true.
I have a very low tolerance for shounen ai. But, as long as its hinted at, and not the sole focus of the show, I can overlook it at times.
I guess as far as likes are concerned, well, I like to be entertained. Thats pretty much all it boils down to. Some of my favorites my be very thoughtful, or brainless comedies. Well drawn/cg works of art, or mutated character/low budget animation "junk". Or, it might be a story about a kid miraculously piloting a giant mech to save the planet yet again, or some slice of life about 2 childhood friends finding romance.
In the end, as long as I'm entertained, then I'll spend the cash on it. Its no more complicated than that.

My favorites are Sci-fi (any variation, space opera probably my favorite of them) and Comedy.
I'm a huge fan of magical girl series like Sailor Moon, Fancy Lala and Cardcaptor Sakura as well as sports/adventure shonen for the younger kids. Some fantasy series are also quite enjoyable.
I'm usually willing to give other genres a shot but my favorite series are typically listed above.

My favorite genres are shounen, shoujo (especially of the magical girl variety), sci-fi, mecha, fantasy, BL, and comedy. While these are the genres I love the most, I try to be open minded and am willing to try most anything so long as it sounds interesting to me and isn't too fanservicey. I don't mind some occasional sexual humor like in Tenchi Muyo or My Hime but it has to have something more than sex jokes and nose bleeds every other second to get me interested.

Late to the party, but...
While I like anime from many genres, my main areas of interest are:
Dark & broody sci fi--among which I include GiTS, Ergo Proxy, & Texhnolyze, as well as the "angst-fests" EVA & Fafner and their less psychologically challenged cousin RahXephon.
Shoujo-ai--I just can't deny the base and somewhat perverse pleasure I get out of the better amongst these, including Marimite, KnM & Simoun.
Space opera--While I may classify these a step down from the dark & broodies, the best are at or near the top of my list: Crest of the Stars, Outlaw Star, Capt Herlock, Space Battleship Yamato, etc.
Those would be my top 3, trailed closely by "Mecha," "Girls with guns," and just plain "Romance"--doesn't matter whether it's in or out of high school, if the relationships are compelling.

Well, I like a lot of things, so I'd buy almost anything, but the only category I buy everything in would be BL. I know some of it is bad, but I can't bring myself to not buy it.
And on that note, I need to go bug Media Blasters for Gakuen Heaven disk 3... :P
