Hi, I'm trying to figure out whether or not the DVD I have is bootleg, and I was hoping someone could help me identify it. When I bought the movie on ebay, I made sure to pick one that had the North American cover in the auction, had no subtitles...etc.

However, the disc that arrived has a Japanese cover with "Avex trax" listed in the "Staff" section on the back. The case is clear, with a reversible cover that is more or less the same on both sides (one has a description in Japanese, the other does not). The disc itself has a closeup of D's face, with the letters of "Vampire Hunter D" cut out to show a gold surface below.

It is all region, with Japanese and Chinese subtitles (I know - really bad sign). Of course, this is all different from what the auction said. I am extremely picky about my movie collection and would only ever consider a bootleg if there was no other way to own a movie. So, my question is - did I get screwed here? I paid about $14 for it, when the actual bootleg auctions were going for far less because it seemed legit. I highly doubt the guy is going to give me a refund because I opened the package, thinking it was simply the Japanese version. If anyone knows this bootleg, and even better, can confirm it with a link or something, that would be a great start in trying to get a refund.

Another question - if I do end up stuck with this thing, how bad is it compared to the original? The 5.1 sound was pretty good, but I have no idea what I might be missing out on for the visuals. I did notice some weird red dots in the sky in the opening scene, and I could make out some slight artifacting here and there.

Anyway, I feel pretty suckered at this point and will probably stay away from ebay from now on. I thought the sellers at least had to represent their items with the proper picture. I almost bought the Requiem from the Darkness "perfect" set until I realized the whole collection shared the same cover with DVD1 of the series.

Thanks for the help!

The official R2 has no Chinese subs, so unless you managed to buy a legal Taiwanese disc (R3) or mainland China (R6) it`s a boot.

Ok, thanks :)

I'm going to demand a refund. Maybe Paypal will back me up since the auction was misleading.

Ok, that's it.

Strike one - bought at Ebay
Strike two and three - Chinese subs

Bootleg!

People, don't buy Anime DVD's from Ebay!
You're killing the Anime business in the USA when you do.

I find your message disturbing. Certainly there are many bootlegs on ebay, but if auctions and buying used isn't an option, then our expensive anime titles we purchase essentially have no resale value.

Welcome to the site, and yeah that's a boot. As per forum rules once a boot is ID'd we lock threads about them as the site's focus is legit media only.
