Judging by these new screens, SE has heard my cries and returned Dragon Quest IX to the ever awesome turn based ways.

*cries tears of joy*

Oh Square-Enix, I thought you had abandoned this poor man to the dust with an action-based DQIX, but now you've returned it to turn-based (at least for the single player).

My faith in all things good has been restored! :3

A double edged sward, change can be good... but i guess they didnt think that such a good ip was worth the risk. Looks great still.

Here's the Babelfish:

"Square Enix reveals some new images of Dragon Quest IX: Protectors of the Sky on Nintendo DS in the Japanese magazine Shonen Jump, the play more awaited in Japan. One thus discovers new decorations and characters in 3d, as well as the system (Character Making) allowing to personalize (face, clothing, weapons, etc.) its hero, who seems obviously rather complete. In addition, it would seem that the play finally adopted a system of combat to the turn by turn, a little in the style of Dragon Quest Monsters J. The exit of the play is always planned for the end of the year in Japan. The Public garden Enix Party 2007 (May 12 and 13 next) will be certainly the occasion for the Japanese editor to reveal new images and vidéos of Dragon Quest IX: Protectors of the Sky. To follow."

So! "Character Making" would seem to mean that your party characters are not defined by the story, making this more along the lines of DQ3. (Yay!) "Turn by turn" combat does seem to be the traditional turn-based battles that we're used to. And Babelfish translations are some of the funniest things in the universe.

Well, they've got two big franchises that go back like twenty years. S-E has already shown they're willing to go bold with one of them, so might as well go the traditional route with the other. Besides, Japan's where DQ is the biggest, and let's be honest, while they provide their share of innovation they don't exactly embrace change in gaming like the rest of the world.

I can't wait to play DQIX regardless.

I wonder what play they're putting on? :P

Indeed. Translating things with Babelfish has brought me many hours of joy. ("Magical Horseman Ray Ground" by CLAMP :sd:)

As for the DQ news, I honestly can't find myself caring one way or the other.

Well for certain there is going to be mixed reaction. Some will celebrate sticking with the tradition. However others will gripe even more about what they personally feel is a series that doesn't change enough. For certain it could be fun to read some of the topics on this or maybe not. :sd:

I'm very disappointed in S-E for not doing what needs to be done to DQ. Maybe someday they'll finally improve the battle system from DQ1.

It also will apparently feature random battles (as always) only now with the enemies being viewable (and avoidable).

Last Japanese RPG in this vein was Blue Dragon and that turned out almost perfectly.

The only other thing I could ask for is a nice LE DQ IX DS Lite.

Is it me or does that sentance contradicts itself? (playing too much Pwright :horse: ) Sounds like the Grandia system in how encounters are handled, that would be swell... i guess the 4 player co-op online mode is still there?

You really don't think they'll miss the opportunity for a custom DS lite bundle, do you? :)

I have to say this is pretty bad news in my view, not being a fan of turn-based RPGs. Still, it might be worth getting anyway, who knows.
