Since it's almost Mother's Day it seemed like a good time to start a thread on Anime Moms. I'll start off with Kyoko Honda. Honestly i think she deserves as much credit for helping the Sohmas as Tohru since a lot fo what made Tohru Tohru came from her mom's influence.

Evil Fencedude! I'll presume not, but I'm going to throw in Goei anyway, for her strength in sending her daughter off with a smile, even though she knew there was a good chance she'd never see her again. Awww! How is she in DD?

I'm very partial to Akiko of Kanon. A great mom - a single parent, to boot. Her accident gets me every time.

She may not count, but Haruko Kamio from Air is the best anime mother in my book. Ep. 11 proves it.

Kanon came to mind first for me as well. Minase Akiko-sama~~! Kamio Haruko from Air I can kind of see, as a good "reforms her ways" type turnaround. Shigure Ama is great as well, mostly because of HAT and HOT.

I'm also quite fond of Usui's mom Fumio in Karin. Also HOT.

Oh, and Kamiazuma Yumiko from Touka Gettan =D Muahahaha... ::gets the desire to rewatch episode 3::

My favorite moms:
• Saotome Nodoka (Ranma Nibunnoichi). Might actually be nicer than Kasumi, except for the whole seppuku thing.
• Hitotsubashi Akane (Kamichu!). I don't know, she just seems girlish and vivacious but still motherly. Cute, too.
• Murai Julia (GTO). Smokin' hot, and she's absolutely committed to raising Kunio to be a good man. Great role model, sort of.

Incomplete:
• Otonashi Kyoko (Maison Ikkoku). What do you think? Is Haruka more like her mom or her dad?

Unknown but possibly awesome:
• Ôsaka's mom (Azumanga Daioh). What was she on during the pregnancy?

I agree with disarmething: There are a lot of absences in the mother department. And not too many worthy dads, either.

I was thinking the exact same thing when I posted. Osaka's mom had to be AWESOME.

Shigure Ama is great as well, mostly because of HAT and HOT.

Random anime moms:

Cardcaptor Sakura: Tomoyo's mom's infatuation with Sakura's cuteness really scares me sometimes. :sd:

Sailor Moon: I always felt sorry for Usagi's mom and having to put up with this ditzy girl who brings home poor test scores all the time. On a side note, I always wished we could've seen more of Ami's mom. Her being a doctor was interesting to me.

Marmalade Boy: Miki and Yuu's moms (and their dads) are pretty nuts. Kudos to these two teens for putting up with them.

Angelic Layer: Misaki's mom. Simple as that.

Fighting Spirit: I really respect Ippo's mom for letting him pursue him dream/interest of boxing. Some Japanese parents try to force their kids into going into certain fields. I liked how she let him do what made him happy, even if it made running her fishing boat business a little tough at times.

No one's mentioned her yet, so might as well - Achika Masaki from the first Tenchi movie. Still one of my favorite mothers in anime. I will have to agree on Fumio (Karin) being hot.

I'm going to back you up on Kyoko Honda. Not only was she so influential in raising Tohru to be as amazing as she is, but she was also a great positive force in Hana and especially Uo's life.

My fave which hasn't been mentioned (I think) has to be Aki Hinata from Keroro Gunsou - just the first ep she's in proves just how fun and unique she is with her ruling the house with an iron fist (single mother as well) yet loving the attempting alien named Keroro (she loves slimy things :sd: ...) and she tries as hard as she can in trying to make time for Natsumi and Fuyuki despite her manga editing job.

OH yes, she's definitely hot as well...just saying... :D

Lum's Mom. I loved that she 'seemed' so sweet, but we don't know, cause she doesn't speak any Earth languages so we have no idea what she actually ever says.

The fact that Lum's father seems terrified of the idea of actually having to disagree with her kind of hints at a few things though....

No mention of Sana Kurata's mom in Kodocha??? Or did I just miss it? I mean, how cool is she? a free spirit with an iron backbone, what a combination! :)

I thought Noein did some pretty interesting commentary regarding parenting styles and mothers. Yu's mom has the "YOU MUST STUDY OR DIE" attitude my mom has, so that is one of the reasons Noein has really struck me because I can associate with it so well.

Snow Fairy Sugar Saga's mom was obviously a loving and caring person, teaching her daughter to appreciate music and play the piano. Even after she died she was still a source of joy and inspiration.

Daa! Daa! Daa! Props to Miyu for surviving having a mom who up and moves to another country, leaving her with a weird monk (who leaves himself the same day she arrives!) and his son to live with.

She sort of popped into my head when I thought of a mother's instinctive nature to protect her offspring.

And nothing says that like spoiler

Naomi going into "Terminator Mode" destroying anything or anyone that stood between her and getting Yoko back safe and sound.

To touch so many lives in a positive way is what I would have to say is the true hallmark of a great mom.

Nadeshiko Kinomoto and Ama Shigure deserve a nod here too.
