Anime Fanartists

Uh, this thread isn't inherently NSFW or anything, because it's not like fanart == porn, but some of it certainly can be, and not all the sites I'm linking to are worksafe, but neither is AOD or anime in general, so just wait until you get home.

I know the line between "fanartist" and "commercial artist" is blurry, but I specify fanartists generally, just to point out that I'm not looking for someone to suggest, say, Itou Noiji or Yoshitabe Abe or Carnelian, etc. That would be a rather different thread, focusing on artists who have been heavily involved in work that got animated, or the animated work itself.

I know a lot of people hang out around anime imageboards, but as the innumerable cries of SAUCE raised across the internet over the years have made clear, it's hard to find information about the origin of images. But I know there are at least some others like me who are big into finding out who drew what, and keeping up on what they're constantly releasing.

So which artists are you a fan of? What kind of work do they usually do? Got links? Examples? The artists I'm most likely to follow tend to do a lot of Touhou, Nanoha and Haruhi art. I know, SHOCK! but that's hardly all I look at though. The biggest reason why I'm able to keep up with new artists is danbooru, but RSS feeds deserve much, much love~ It's a shame many Japanese fanartists' sites kinda... suck... though (and unless they're based on blog software, most lack RSS feeds so it's hard to stay on top of things). If I see one more site where their 'gallery' is "here's a page of 500 hyperlinked dots with no thumbnails or anything, just click em all!" I'm going to scream... ...and then spend the next hour opening them all and saving what I like anyway, and probably uploading half of it to danbooru :sd:

A couple examples of artists I like a lot will follow, some worksafe, some not, some outright hentai, some as clean and pure as newly fallen snow. I have a taste for really clean, colorful art, with strong lines and nicely touched-up textures and such. So you won't really see artists heavy on oekaki or rough sketches, although I've saved plenty of great examples of that stuff to my images folder in the past.

Also note that artist names are based on how we do it at Danbooru, which is generally trying to find the name they use in the profile/about/info pages most sites have. When it's kanji and they don't provide a reading, it might just be a best guess. And a lot of artists don't use their real names either. Sometimes a circle or website name gets used, either inadvertently, or for lack of having anything better. So if I'm wrong, please correct me.

I'll try to keep it at or below the ecchi/pantyshots level, but if slightly more explicit stuff gets through... oh well. :sd:

[tab]Content: The king of topical shoujo-ai, cranking out images at the slightest hint of girl on girl goodness. His style is probably an acquired taste -- I saw pics of his floating around for quite some time before I realized "Hey, I like this..." He doesn't have any particular series he focuses on. All that is needed is some real, implied, or even just hoped-for girl-girl lovin'. I just wish his pictures were a little bigger.

I have a lot of Touhou images, but oddly it seems like I don't have a terribly huge amount from any *one* artist... I think almost everyone in japan that draws anything does at least one Touhou character in their career. It's like a rule. But his images are just so vibrant and detailed and I consider few fanartists to be in his league.

Most of the characters are probably pretty well known but if anyone wants to know what series a character is from, just ask -- I didn't feel like typing all the series names in (aside from some I figured were too obscure, or from games without an anime yet), and it would have gotten pretty (more?) cluttered. Or you might be able to tell from the first part of the filename, I save all my images as "series character ###.ext", using a standard acronym/abbreviation for each series. Photobucket just strips out spaces to avoid icky %20ness in URLs.

I'll gladly do more later if there's any interest in this thread whatsoever, but I've already spent four hours (or something, I stopped counting) doing this so I think I'll call it a night ...morning?... for now. Anyone with some to share, even if it's just a link, please do. Heck even if you just have an image you can't find a source for, maybe someone else knows, so give it a try?

I don't have any links to give myself, but the Touhou stuff is pretty nice and some of it if not all of it I've saved in the past. Still in general while I do save fanart images, I'm often not that familiar who with who makes what.

Then again it's probably because I'm saving images from image threads and the like as opposed to visiting sites. Although in the past I would visit webrings for certain series and thus check the fanart on those sites. Which varied greatly in quality.

Either way this thread has the potential to be quite educational. So it's definitely one that is needed. Even if some of us have to be the educated instead of the educators. :P

Ah yes, this is one I have a few pictures from but haven't recognized as such.

Artist is �るや�, Haruyama. Looking at my images, I only have one tagged 'haruyama' but looking at how ridiculously prolific the artist has been... I'm sure I have a heck of a lot more than that. He's got a good bit on Danbooru too (73), so I could probably go back through my images and add the name to quite a bunch. That Haruhi I recognized instantly, so I found the file and added the artist. Seems to have been at it for awhile now too, and pretty much anything released before Danbooru went on its artist-sourcing obsessive streak a year ago or so is going to be without an artist for me. Hmm.

This one I'm not familiar with, though I think I've seen (and maybe have) some of his Rozen art. Nice style, consistent quality, though he does a lot of what I guess is game or original art, since I'm not familiar with most of it. Definitely like the RM stuff though.

Artist appears to be æ±*端リョヲ, something like Ikehashi/Ikehata/Ikebata Ryowo.

...More artists really need to include kana readings of their names, though I guess it's more obvious to a Japanese speaker which reading would be most likely :sd:

Like you mention in the feeback forum topic I'm one of the many who love this type of art but don't really learn or follow specific artists. Every once in a while I stumble upon something simply amazing but never have the faculties to find out where to get more of it. It's probably for the best considering my collectors mentality borders on obsessive in this area.

Amazingly enough I'm not terribly fond of any of the artists you've showcased. I don't dislike any of them, but there's a certain use of color, shading, and line style that I really prefer and none of these artists use the styles I like. That and I love high resolution stuff and this isn't. :)

That's why I said fanart and not highres scans =P There's not really a whole lot of fanart that's in super high resolutions. You're gonna have to go find some Wave Ride (http://www1.interq.or.jp/nerve/) or something =P But he tends to go pretty lolitastic and explicit so I'm iffy on his stuff. Well that and the truly humongous res stuff he does doesn't seem to be on his site -- I just come across it other places. I'm not sure if he's got it in some section I haven't really bothered to look for.

It's funny you should link that guy. That's exactly the kind of artwork I really dislike. I find people's love of vector traces to be baffling too. What's so appealing about artwork that is so flat and devoid of detail? Give me something with rich colors and line textures and subtle gradients like the work of Izumi Sakurazawa or Taraku Uon or Goto P (who's recently decided to do more than just loli, though he did the most tasteful loli around I must say...). Those are not fan artists but there are some who fall inline with those styles and I wish they were easier to find.

Heh, that's a popular one but I guess I never really got into the style. I guess if I had to give one flaw for UPS, it's that he focuses on Bleach and One Piece fan art a little too much. Don't get me wrong, I love his drawings of those series, but I'd really like to see him branch out into the multitude of other animes out there.

This artist has sort of a cartoony style (the only word I could think of, although I don't really mean cartoony, if that makes sense). And the girls usually have some weight to them (in good ways). Used to do a lot of Precure art, which I thought was the best out of all I've seen. Now he seems to be in Persona 3 mode.

If you like To Heart and Fate/Stay Night, then this site is for you...cause he tends to do mostly both with some Muv Luv and KimiNozo girls thrown in here and there. There's usually alternate versions of any of the pictures which tend to remove articles of clothing.... :blush:

Trimoon has some great stuff, though a few of them are a bit much for me. They produce really high resolution versions that really bring out a unique look to the style. There's a couple there I don't have the big version of that I really wish I did.

Damn straight you can, the great Ibuki Pon (indeed one of the only people to do Lindy fanart) was on my list of ones to do more of if there was interest in this thread. I'd comment more on others if I weren't getting late for work already.

I'm not a big fan, generally, of Ishikei's stuff, but I've seen a few pieces from him that were... really nice. Anything really "fluidy" or hardcore tends to turn me off though.
