There are some characters that generally look less-than-attractive (possibly because of clothing, mannerisms, etc) but with a makeover, can look absolutely stunning.
Which characters for both genders do you consider to be the most attractive in this category?
To get the ball rolling, these are my nominations:
Female
Ritsuko Kubel Kettenkrad (Kujibiki Unbalance TV)
Most of the time when she's wearing that helmet and in uniform, she looks more like a female Darth Vader. But when she removes that helmet, lets down her hair and really dresses up, she's absolutely one of the most gorgeous anime characters ever.
Male
Mamoru Kagemori (Kage Kara Mamoru)
He's usually wearing dorky glasses and walking and talking like a nerd. But when he changes to a ninja, he's actually quite a dashing figure.

I have to say personally I like the OVA version better than the redesign for the TV series. But I agree on the character. Definitely a hidden beauty.

The OVA bugged me with its exaggerated limb proportions. They sort of looked like gorillas. It was one reason I never even watched the second and third episodes of it when I recently marathoned Genshiken.

I can see that, but I guess I liked the designs since they were so exaggerated. As it was a show within a show, it was interesting to contrast the somewhat more realistic designs of the Genshiken crowd, with the wildly exaggerated KujiAn characters. It just worked.
The design for the TV series, though, just wound up making many of the characters look creepy to me.

I think the first two that immediately came to mind was Chisame Hasegawa (Negima) and Haruhi Fujioka - Ouran on the female side - Chisame herself pretty much does it for her own kicks, but as Chiu she is stunning, whilst Haruhi of course gets the Ouran make over and whilst yes, she is confused as a man, put the long wig and a dress on and suddenly, all eyes are on her...
On the male side, my favourite scruffbag Rowe Beckenbaur from L/R does the trick - considering his disguises he has to go through in his normal outfit he kinda looks like a beggar, but put him in Jack like attire and he can be quite the beau...until he talks. :sd: The same could be said for Hanai Haruki from School Rumble - he is quite handsome without his glasses and in a tux, but as Sarah put it, 'Now don't say anything and you'll look even better!!!'

I'd like to second the Chisame/Chiu nomination, but also what about another Ken Akamatsu character, more obvious than even Chisame? I'm talking Naru Narusegawa from Love Hina. When she's in study mode, you'd never believe that there hides a stunning beauty behind those thick glasses.
