View Full Version : Higurashi Story Question: Expect Spoilers

I'll start by saying that my information on the series is limited as I've only seen eight episodes. For two basic reasons I always hesitated to watch more. The second reason related to the question I'll ask shortly. Since the series became licensed and I'm trying to cut back on fansubs in general that means that trying to watch more is no longer an option. Well unless I cave in and collect the series.

In any case the first reason would be the buzz and discusion. It's not a case of "Oh people like this series? Time to automatically hate it!" It's more like I went into the series thinking you'd need an iron stomach. Yet various comments started to make it sound like you need a stomach made out of well let's just say super magical alloy. So eventually I became nervous especially since the whole iron stomach thing was hard enough. Granted to be fair maybe I'm reading too much into the comments and it may not be as bad it sounds.

The second reason is the whole pattern thing. I admit the first two arcs were interesting in a creepy way. Plus the idea did stand out. However when I tried to watch more I kept thinking again and again the same thing. Which was "Why should I bother? They're just going to go whacko and kill each other(Again?)." Despite knowing that the two arcs were different in multiple ways this feeling became overwhelming for me. It may hard to watch anymore.

Hence forth my question. Will/Does Higurashi ever become more than a case of simply showing a new path to yet another bad end? In other words is there going to ultimately be some sort of pay-off? Ie where the final arc actually provides some sense of closure. So that way be it regardless of how well or poorly things turn out you at least get the sense that this is the way things are meant to be.

I would like to request this much for those who may want to give the answer. Try to hide any of the heavier details in hide tags. I'm mainly looking for answer along the lines of either "Yes there will be closure to the series in the final arc" or "No in the end the final arc while revealing some new info is just in the end another arc with nothing to make it stand out."

Also yes I already know the second season has only just started. So any answer would be based on the source material and for all I know that may not be finished either. Still it doesn't hurt to ask and perhaps try to find out.

All I know is Higurashi creates a dilemma for me. On one hand my weaker stomach and the whole pattern thing makes me hesitant to watch it. Yet because of the character designs (Yes I'm shallow) and the whole idea of the story itself, I remain partially curious about it. Although whether or not such curiousity would make me cave in is another question. Maybe at the best least I should consider reading spoilers.

From everything I've heard, yes, at the end of the second season there will be final closure, we will learn all of the secrets and the truth will come out.

Ah that's the answer I was hoping to hear. I'll decide what to do in regards to reading spoilers or whatever a bit later.

Actually, by the last arc of the first season (Tsumihoroboshi) you should really start to get a feel for where things are going.

If they stay true to the kanji they flashed in the first PV for the second season (which showed the Kanji for the last two arcs of the game that wrap things up, Minagoroshi and Matsuribayashi) then we will be getting the final "solution" arcs and a solid "end."

The first 2 arcs I would say is "how" it came to the conclusion. It's only when you discard the "how" and focus on the "why" that when you reach the end of the first season, you'll figure that something deeper is making fate repeat itself one way or another. I've only touched upon some of Minagoroshi's story but from what I understand, it will be a story worth watching and connecting the dots with.

Well in that case I'll definitely read episode summaries for the first season. Actually I just finished reading the summaries for 9-15. So I've got 16-26 left to read in terms of the first season. Still it's nice to know that the story is more involved than I originally thought it would be.

Well depending on how I feel about season 1 based on the summaries, I'll consider reading the spoilers for season 2 as well. Although whether or not I'll do that as each comes up or just wait until a huge chunk of summaries comes up is another story.

Before anyone says "Just go ahead and watch it!". I'll explain it this way. I'm trying to go by the policy that until there is actual intent to collect the previous season that's been licensed, I won't watch the next season which is currently unlicensed. Now if I were to cave in and decide to collect Higurashi Season 1 then I'd watch season 2.
