[E3] Microsoft Press Conference (8:30pm PDT)

Thought it would be an idea to have a separate thread for each of the three press conferences, rather than cluttering the general E3 thread and keeping it for the pics, vids and stories that will come once the press conferences are done.

Anyway, Microsoft are first to the stage at 8:30pm PDT (4:30am tomorrow for anyone in the UK/Europe).

Like last year, they will be making demos, videos etc available through Live after they've made their announcements.
This, and the other conferences) can be followed at various sites, but from previous experience, my two favourites are:

Nothing new, but their game selection really is pretty solid. If the other two don't get more than couple decent titles out this year even the Wii might get its buzz smashed. But what's the likelihood some high caliber Wii/PS3 titles that are actually coming out this year have been kept completely under wraps? Yeah, I'm not seeing good odds there.

Still, pretty boring E3 conference. Solid selection of games overall, but nothing new.

Yeah, conference was a D or an F but their upcoming game selection is an A or a B. There's a lot of shit coming out, and if they actually get all the stuff out they listed this year they'll own most of the top spots on the sales charts for home consoles.

Yeah, I knew it was all coming too, but seeing it up on the screen there at the end all together sort of drove it home. I'm going to be spending most of my dollars with MS over the next few months.

We'll see the real in-depth stuff coming this week for sure, not to worked up over seeing smoke and mirrors clips. But hey, confirmed Assassin's Creed gameplay footage finally! That was dope.

The whole conference was "HEY, LOOK AT OUR CHRISTMAS LINEUP!". That and Resident Evil 5 looked pretty good, but nothing ground breaking.

Which is fine, because this is supposed to be a scaled back E3. Why not spend the marketing dollars towards what they should really focus on, winning the holiday 2007 sales. No reason to ignore those release for stuff that may or may not come out in 2008, that's why they scaled back E3.

I'll probably be picking up a 360 this holiday season, but I can still take pot shots :D

I'm really excited for Ace Combat 6(especially online), Call of Duty 4, and Assassins Creed. I'm still not a huge fan of the "horse armor" or stuff we'd normally release free/ship with the game DLC though. I can see a day where half a game is shipped only for you to buy the rest via DLC.

Pros: Solid line up for the year, Resident Evil 5 came out of nowhere.
Lows: Aside from RE5, no future line up of games. If you want gamers to focus on you, one must surprise them and want them craving more and Microsoft failed to do that in my opinion; Halo 360 is a horrible design; no surprise game at the end; and Microsoft should have announced a price drop of some sort. If they had announced a slight price drop, it would have been a nice gift bag, thrown together with the strong 2007 line up, wrapped with a bow on top.

That was the basic theme of the whole conference in a nutshell. Microsoft needed to drive that point to make a point as to why one should buy their console over Nintendo and Sony. It seems to me Microsoft is betting on Sony having a poor line up of games to show or they are so far off from release that they should persuade someone to buy now and focus on the future later on.

Overall, I think this whole E3 will be about the games. The previous E3's have been about hardware and now companies simply are trying to sell us on the games.

There weren't many surpsises because most of the publishers and developers (at least he multiplatform ones) have been announcing their games via trailers, viddocs and the like months before hand. Most of the games there I have seen before.

I was impressed by the XBLA lineup as well.

The audience for this E3 was the press, so it did have some press-centric things on there but it was similar to the past E3's. They showed games, playable games, games coming out this year, and lots of them. People grade it low but really, compare they really have the largest lineup for this year

The conference itself doesn't seem to be there as one big d/l. Pity as I want to see Mr. Moore pause Rock Band. Twice :D

But yeah, the good stuff was Assassin's Creed, Resi 5, PGR4, Lost Odyssey, the XBLA stuff etc but that Viva Pinata game and Scene It? just came off as really bad attempts by MS to try to say "look, we're family friendly". Just not gonna work.

Dunno if you lot get Buzz for the PS2 in the US but it's pretty popular here in Europe. Anyway, Scene It is a conplete rip-off, even down to the identical controller. Can't see people buying a 360 for it the way they would a PS2.

I don't think their aim is to have a party game drive their consoles, but more of a gap filler between hardcore and casual. The 360 will never be a casual game system unless you take into consideration the XBLA library.

People in general wanted to hear about unannounced 2008 stuff, which, for the most part (RE5), would have went against their presentation. Unlike the other consoles they actually have a strong overall holiday lineup so I find nothing wrong with focusing on the point. It really hits home and it's a pretty damn good argument on why that one should be the one anyone should bother owning this year. Stronger existing lineup + stronger 07 lineup means MS owners will be gaming while the other consoles twiddle their thumbs waiting for one or two big releases to shine through.

But nothing new also makes for a pretty damn boring press conference.

Ya I watched it on G4 since my broadband speed is a very low end speed, thus the video quality I get online would be crappy compared to cable, so I vouched for G4, boy I was wrong. G4 should have not cut any of the conference, if they worried about ads, they should have done on screen ads. The programming director who cut to ads in the middle of the Halo 3 trailer should be fired. However, this is G4 and they don't have any commonsense, so I doubt it will ever happen.

I think x07 is for their 2008 release announcement venue, not E3. The media will focus on this years releases, because print wants 5 months of cover stories before the year ends. At least MS met that end of the bargain.

I could say that about a lot of franchises.

Loved seeing the detailed environments of the village, some gameplay that looked decent, and the AKFG song rocks. I'm a little worried though that I didn't see Rock Lee anywhere. How can I open the 8 gates of chakra on johnny's ass without Rock Lee?

Sid Meier's Civ Revolution
Not much to see yet, but if Henry Rollins is going to actually be a voice in the game, and not just this trailer, then I'm pre-ordering now. I have a man-crush on Hank.

Best trailer out of the bunch. The footage looked like in-game rendering, but it wasn't actually gameplay. Looks hot.

Lost Odyssey
What was that other Mistwalker RPG coming out soon? I completely forgot after watching this totally "ace" trailer. Stoked this is coming this year.

Mass Effect
This seems like one of those games where I'll LOVE the single player story, world, creatures, etc, but the multiplayer will bore me to death. BioWare does good shit, so I'm down.

Looking to be the best online multiplayer XBLA game to date, with possible competition from Undertow with its 16-player online.

I saw at least 6-8 XBLA games in the montage I'd consider buying as well. So based on this list of purchases, I give MS an A for getting me to spend money.

Wow, the Halo 3 trailer is really, really underwhelming - even compared to some of the stuff we've already got on 360. The choppy framerate visible in parts of the trailer really doesn't inspire confidence either.

The Naruto game does look like pretty good fun, though. Still downloading some of the other trailers.
