Nintendo are second on the schedule at 9am PDT on the 11th July (5pm tomorrow for anyone in the UK/Europe).

This, and the other conferences) can be followed at various sites, but from previous experience, my two favourites are:

Gamespot (http://e3.gamespot.com/live.html?tag=event_nav;live)
Eurogamer (http://www.eurogamer.net/e3_index.php) (live text update)

Well last year you had the big PS3 announcement, the Wii with Zelda, and GTA IV from MS. This year it's kind of a ho hum, and the big spectacle is gone. This'll be the first E3 with all the consoles together so it'll be more of a "what games are coming out for this console" rather then a "LOOK AT THIS NEW STUFF COMING WITH OUR NEW CONSOLE!".

Lovely
07-10-2007, 04:48 PM
Ah, you know what? That's probably it. It's not that I don't love video games and all, but my gaming interest tends to go towards very specific genre's that are generally just not that popular in the mainstream.
But yeah, last year with all the new consoles being revealed and everything... it was just so exciting.

That, and some of Sony's comments in last years press conference kind of turned me off towards press conferences I guess...

Lucky! I'm actually off tomorrow. All I'm really looking forward to is more Smash Bros info. I am aware of the daily update website, but I would like some more video footage. That alone just makes me forget about everything else at E3.

I see what you mean. I like DK and Yoshi, but announcing them won't really be a surprise. We already got Zelda and Bowser confirmed, but I do want to see another newcomer announced. But I'm hoping for someone from an original game instead of some mediocre secondary Mario and Zelda characters. And the Pokeball and Assist trophy characters don't count.

It's a great way to take advantage of the Wii but with each of these announcements, Nintendo loses more of their hardcore status. It's pretty much all about the casual gamers for them now. They gave us hardcore a nice vid of Mario Galaxy and Mario Kart but this is their highlight for sure.

You think they would have announced a US date for Fire Emblem: Goddess of Dawn. But there's still time unless it got shafted for a dopey board or Nintendo completely forgot about it. Nah.

Yeah, no FE news was a big disappointment for me. Although WiiFit does seem like it could have some uses for me, especially since it could track data, which would make sure that I'm making progress. (I know it won't be instant, but... I'm about the long-term.) Overall, I do have to say that it was more entertaining than Microsoft's was, but yeah, it does feel like N's going a little too casual. (Then again, I left the hardcore market, so maybe that's why I'm interested?) I'll have to give them a B- on this.

Well, that sucked. Was there any DS info I missed in the beginning thats new/worth knowing about?

Basically just Zelda: Phantom Hourglass and a new Dragon Quest game along with some other forgettable stuff. I sort of hoping they would have announced Kurikin, but I suppose I was expecting too much.

Not really. To be honest, no one can deny that wasn't a disappointment but I'm really glad to see Mario Kart fully online. That's what I was hoping for an I got it. Plus a release date for Mario Galaxy.
Met Prime 3 is looking great and is out soon and I like the Wii Zapper.

Part of me is sad to see that the vast majority of this was for sales speak and Wii Fit but I really can't help but admire what Nintendo are doing. You gotta admit, the mat and stuff is gonna sell through the absolute roof.

So yeah, at least they seem to be serious about the online aspect of the Wii but I really wonder what software is gonna be on the Wii this time in 2-3 years and if the non-games will actually outnumber the 'hardcore games'.

She did an entire interview about assassin's creed in french. She laced the english word "throwing knives" in which was cute.
Yeah, I've watched a couple of those. It was cute when she couldn't find those words for weapons and attack moves and just threw the English in on the fly.

With all the best games yet to be released, it was kind of expected Nintendo wouldn't have a SUPER e3. Mario Kart looks spiffy as usual, very much like a Wii version of MKDS (which is a very good thing, especially compared to Double Dash).
Still... I really hoped to see Pikmin 3. The second was by far my favorite Cube game.
And Mario Galaxy: OOOOOOH BOYYYYYY cannot wait to get my hands on that. If there's one thing that puts me into raving fanboy mode it's a new Mario platformer!

Xbox has a really strong line-up this year, tho. I've been thinking about getting a 360 for a long time; but somehow buying more than 1 console just doesn't sit right for me.

and Sony... well... meh.

The 360 and Wii complement each other well for me. Although I haven't turned on Wii in a while, but the 360 has online/community and HD gameplay, while the Wii is fun for local group gaming sessions. I'm glad I have both.

Granted I have not really watched the conference yet, I may do that later. In general nothing mentioned so far has me excited. Yes the fact I'm still holding off on getting any new systems is part of it. However even ignoring that I just feel meh about what has been said here for some reason. To be honest in general I just don't feel the drive for E3 that I did in the previous years. Not really sure why, but ah well.

Add me to the list of people pissed that we STILL don't have a US date on Fire Emblem, given that we're a year in and we STILL don't have an RPG on the system (and no, Super Paper Mario doesn't count). Hell, no new RPGs were announced, either.

But look at all the "great" things we get instead: a Zapper peripheral that does the same damn thing the existing Wii remote ALREADY does well; a somewhat superfulous Steering Wheel attachment; a Mario Kart game we ALL knew was coming; and a bunch of non-gamer crap. Yippee! </sarcasm>

This is the problem with the new E3: it comes so late in the year now that all the companies have already unloaded their big announcements before the convention has even started. What a disappointment from Nintendo...it's their biggest year in 4-5 years and they won't even properly show off their big titles. What is with Smash Bros. being nonplayable, given that it's only releasing in 6 months?

Good to hear Metroid's nearly ready to go, though.

There's no way FE will be out in the states in 07. I thought we all pretty much came to that conclusion last year. Even if it luckily hit in 07 Nintendo probably wouldn't rush to localize it. It's not quite the draw of Mario Kart and Melee.

What rush? It was practically a Wii launch game in Japan, and the longer Nintendo just sits on localizing the game, the less likely they'll actually release it here. They've had over a year to do something with the game, so this stony silence regarding it bothers me.

I hate Mario as much as some here hate Halo, which I think is milked far more and longer then the MS franchise. And I have no interest in a portable system, so this conference was even more of a disappointment then MS.

I've played the Wii (my brother borrowed for a few months) and plan on getting one soon if for only Nights and some other good stuff coming out, hell I might even get the WiiFit shit if it isn't too high but zapper and wheel look as bad as the 3rd party crap out there and priced twice as high.

I always thought the Wii launch thing was only early speculation, but I must admit I don't keep up with the gaming sites as much as I used to, so I haven't been reading reports on previews or how far the game was into production. But yeah, this kind of stuff with RPGs never surprises me. An 08 release wouldn't surprise me at all.

As predicted the 360 is actually the place to be for next-gen RPGs this year. Maybe Nintendo (or even Sony) can change that next year.

I think the reason Nintendo is holding off on FE is because it's the first game for the Wii to not use any of the Wii's features. And if they release it now you know those dopey game reviewers are going to bash it because of it. Such as not purchasing and using 50 Wii boards to physically run to adjacent squares with the selected unit or not pointing the wii mote at the menu. And when Smash Bros. Brawl is going to use it along with a couple other control styles, SSBB being a hyped up game will just make them forget about it. But I think standard controls suit FE well. In fact, just thinking about this just makes me want to play the JP version right now, so I think I'll go do that.

Also on the subject of the DS, you think Nintendo would have shown us more on the DS camera.

Leon_Belmont

Of course standard controls would work well. RPGs are the dinosaurs of the gaming realm. Add anything novel and it's no longer an RPG. You get called an "Action RPG" or "MMO RPG" or basically denoted as an entire hybrid genre for not having pure RPG elements.

Yeah, the lack of Wii-specific functionality supposedly really hurt the game's sales in Japan, although I honestly don't understand why when that control scheme has been perfect for the genre for decades. Nintendo went into this generation stating that the Wii's strength was its ability to let developers choose a control scheme that worked best for them. However, when one of Nintendo's OWN developers decides that a standard control scheme works best, Nintendo's quick to sweep the project under the rug.

Perhaps Nintendo would have been happier with a Fire Emblem where you could only play the game with other players if all of you had a DS and a copy of the previous Fire Emblem handheld game? Or perhaps if you had to recruit troops by swiping cards through a reader (starter and "reinforcement" sets sold separately). Or perhaps they're just waiting for a "Wii sword" attachment that forces you to swipe it every time you enter a fight. *sigh*

To me, Fire Emblem fills the void left by the fall of the Ogre Battle franchise (a franchise Square STILL hasn't done anything with since acquiring it), so seeing nothing regarding it is a bad sign.

I'm happy that Mario Kart Wii will have online races, but I really hope there isn't friend codes to deal with. I'm really hoping Nintendo manages to get some kind of hub where you can just meet up with random people to race. (actually be able to add people, without exchanging friend codes)

All right, I'm here with my thoughts now that you've all spooged (or vomited) all over the boards.

• MP3 (8.27.07) – I haven't enjoyed the first two, so it's going to hinge on how they use the Wii Remote.
• Wii Zapper – Yay. Could they have made that thing look any more retarded?
• ZPH (10.1.07) – Will get, will have all kinds of fun with.
• SMG (11.12.07) – Will get, will have all kinds of fun with.
• SSBB (12.3.07) – Will get, will kick all of your asses, not joking. I'll just get Dr Wright as my assistant and beat the crap out of everybody with my skyscraper. I'd thought it was out in November, but this is close enough.
• MKW (Q1 2008) – Will get, will kick all of your asses, will actually fly to wherever you are and literally kick your ass if you're a snaker because that's cheating. :P
• Wii Wheel – Yay. Luigi and I don't need all that extra plastic to kick all of your asses.
• Ninja Gaiden DS – Already knew of it, looks okay. Probably wait for a TRU B2G1 sale for it, though. (Was this the only third-party title in the whole thing?)
• Wii Fit – Uh, sure. Could be nice, considering I can't go for a walk in this part of town without a bulletproof vest. Otherwise, :sigh:
• FE:GOD – What the fuck, man. Where's my street date?

Overall grade: B. I pretty much ignore the peripherals and pay attention to the games, and other than the Fire Emblem bidness, I was satisfied but not blown away.

I felt Nintendo was trying to throw out a few curve balls, many just missed and others just barely made it. I could careless for Wiifit, but it is definitely something the general public would be interested in. Mario Kart sounds great! The Zapper is long over due and I look forward to using it, but I would like to know what else is going to use it besides 2 games.

Overall, just like Microsoft, they have an impressive line up for what is coming out in the next 6 months and they just delivered the message that the Wii has a lot to look forward to shortly. However, just like Microsoft, I wish they would have expanded with what their plans are beyond the next 6-8 months.

True, but America should be more like perhaps the greatest demographic anywhere - the young Japanese boy. The Shonen if you will.

You yanks like the Pokemen, right? Well it's like that only different.
how is Dragon Quest Joker different from Dragon Quest Monsters then?

Well the game is called DQ Monsters Joker so I'm not really sure what you mean.

If you mean how it differs from the usual DQ games, it's about role playing, but you capture monsters and use them to fight against other monsters kinda like the Pokemon layout.

sorry, my point is that its just the latest iteration in a long running Dragon Quest spinoff rather than anything unique or good.

Well, that sucked. Was there any DS info I missed in the beginning thats new/worth knowing about?

You know all I heard was Mario Kart Wii with online play across the WORLD. So unless you're talking about Mario Kart Wii I really have nothing to say about Mario Kart Wii.

You think they would have announced a US date for Fire Emblem: Goddess of Dawn. But there's still time unless it got shafted for a dopey board or Nintendo completely forgot about it. Nah.

12th of November (http://www.siliconera.com/2007/07/11/fire-emblem-and-forever-blue-coming-to-north-america/).

*raises fist in the air*

Alright! That's one more Wii game to keep an eye out for this holiday season, along with Smash Bros.; Metriod Prime 3; and Mario Galaxy.

Anyone else notice, though, that Nintendo's release list is (as usual) suspiciously void of anything except Mario Kart for the first quarter of next year? Looks like it could be another deathly-dull Q1 next year.

The guys at IGN vaguely referenced a possible Tales of Symphonia game on the Wii coming next year. Anyone hear about that from E3?

Meh, after the abomination that was Mario Sunshine, Mario Galaxy really needs to be something special for me to justify it as a "must have NOW" game. No Metroid for you, eh? I'm just hoping that Corruption is as interesting to play as the first Metroid Prime. Echoes just bored me to tears, to the extent that I had to start the game over 3 times before I worked up the interest to finish it (and it was 2 years later before that happened).

To me, Fire Emblem fills the void left by the fall of the Ogre Battle franchise (a franchise Square STILL hasn't done anything with since acquiring it), so seeing nothing regarding it is a bad sign.
I would like to say that I miss the OB series as well and definitely enjoy FE to death. Great storyline on both accounts. I wish Square would do SOMETHING with OB or why would they buy it in the first place (I'm guessing to have a close monopoly on the SRPG type games a la now releasing many FFT games).

I'll also throw my request in for a new REAL Shining Force game, not one of these action rpgs that Sega keeps releasing.

With that said, FE will be released this year in the US, and that makes me happy.

Wait, is this Hajime no Ippo boxing for the Wii?

If so, that's cool, though I've heard bad things about it.

Yeah, the same game. I have the import and can say that at first it seems like a real mess control wise, but once you spend an hour or so with it and get the controls down it's a great, fun boxing game.
I may get the US version too just for the story etc.

It was in looking over that big long Nintendo release schedule that Magus? posted above, that I had a mini-epiphany; is THIS what you were worried about with the Wii, Johnny? I admit it, there are a few nice titles in there but not a whole heck of a lot. While I think I liked a bit more of the launch titles then you might have, that release schedule is a bit....thin. :sd:

Personally, I don't give a damn if Project HAMMER was canned...it was just another damn beat-em-up. Like I haven't seen a million of those over the years. My worry is the lack of RPGs and adventure games, a genre Nintendo systems have been thin on since the N64 days. Where's the Square-Enix support? And no, wanna-be RPG "Crystal Chronicles" doesn't count.

Ideally, the somewhat-thin Wii line-up would be supported by strong virtual console support, but I can count maybe a couple dozen good-to-decent virtual console titles out there right now. Of course, in typical fashion we have no RPGs right now on the VC...

Exactly. I just find it really laughable that a lot of the people who think the PS3 has no good upcoming exclusives are Nintendo fans holding on to just 4 Wii games (Mario Galaxy, Metroid 3, Mario Kart, SSBB) for the foreseeable future.

I'm alright in terms of volume of games because I will import the weird and wonderful stuff that no one else wil care about, so at least I'll be playingsomething but the WiiFit thing and how Miyamoto was talking about making Mario Galaxy shorter for the 'inexperienced player' really annoys me.

Yes, more people in gaming is great but if I see another 'lifestyle' vid with painfully cool people playing 'hardcore' Wii games, or Nintendo talking about making their games more accessible to the family or new gamer, I'm going to either cry or smash shit.

If Nintendo continue to do this, fair enough, I can understand that but what happens when 3rd party devs feel the need to release short, easy games with no substance just because they can include a control scheme that makes it easy for granny or your little brother to play?

E3 2007 is a disappointment.

Most of the games announced was from last year.

Nintendo was the only noticeable company that had some new items like the Wii Fit, Wii Zapper and Wii Wheel.

I laughed at that Wii wheel thing. This is the same peripheral Ubi have had on the market since the Wii launch only with a Nintendo logo on it.

I wouldn't call the Wii gun new by any means. Sure, it'll likely make Resi UC and Ghost Squad easier/more fun to play but it's just a glorified light gun. Gimme the GCon 4 any day.

As for having new stuff to show, it was clearly Sony who triumphed there. But yeah, this E3 has been sorely disappointing. It's been great seeing new vids of games I'm looking forward to, but there's been very little excitement. Roll on TGS.

Maybe I should've mentioned that release schedule is for titles they've announced are coming before the end of the year for the most part. Mario Kart is supposed to be for Q1 2008.

Frankly I'm not concerned though because I really don't expect to see some really good 3rd party software for Wii until sometime next year. Right now the 3rd parties are just hobbeling through for the most part with a few minor exceptions and it shows.

Oh, and Project H.A.M.M.E.R. has been shelved for the time being, not cancelled. Disaster: Day of Crisis is coming along nicely.

Y'know what? I've been watching more Wii Fit vids and am currently watching the Gamespot live E3 feed where they're demoing it and I reckon I might get this, not for the fitness stuff so much, but for the mini games etc.

Anyone else coming round to the idea?

Seriously man, Wii Fit - I'm, there. Granted I'm a wee bit drunk (alright, completely fucked) and have been since I typed that I was hyped for the game but fuck it, Miyamoto is awesome and he makes me smile and the Wii is awesome even if there isn't too many games atm :D

Er, yeah, Metroid Prime 3 as well.

Super Mario Galaxy is on the bottom of my list as well, but the nice thing about it is that the Wii is my brother's, so he'll be the one getting all the games anyway. And I'm pretty sure his list of games he's interested in is the same as mine.
