I am trying to remember an anime as I have enough money now to rent and watch when I didn't before. I saw bits of it at a friends house. I think it was by the same people as lain but is was very different. In the episodes I saw a girl was waking up from an egg in a strange land where a segment of the population (her included) had what looked like angel wings. For reasons that were not explained in the ones I saw everyone seems to have been born at different ages and those with wings almost seemed to be second class citizens (could only wear second hand clothes and the like) it looked very stylish and strange but interesting. Not sure if it is one I want to buy but definitely want to check it out more. Thanks for any help you can provide!

Haibane Renmei. One of the best anime of all time too. :)

Ah yes thats it thanks. Started a little slow for my tastes I mean it seemed like she had no memories from before she was "born" but I still would have been asking questions...am I dead (though I guess without memories you would have no basis to ask that question hmm I don't known..). If it is one of the best maybe I should just buy it hmm don't know will have to see (I hardly ever watch things more than once..)

Even if you've seen it all the way through it's worth owning. It's hard to find a show with such atmosphere. I remember when I first realized what they were hinting at about what their dreams are really about. That feeling stayed with me for a while.

I'm utterly and completely biased, so of course I have to say buy it ^_^ Geneon pricing isn't the best, but if you wait you can find sales that will do you good.

Not a series I recommend to everyone, despite it being my all-time favorite, but if the early episodes were to your liking you're certainly going to love the rest.

This thread eminds me that I really should finish this one day >_> I bought the first two discs, and liked it, but this was when I was at the nadir of my relationship with Pioneer/Geneon, and I sold the discs off in protest, in addition to nearly boycotting them for about a year. Waaaaaay later when Geneon improved more to my liking, I rebought the first half (for the exact same price I sold it at, so no loss!) and then grabbed the second half too. It's been in the backlog ever since.

Since it's nice and short... hmm, maybe I have a plan for my next 'weekend marathon'. Lately I've been focusing on new stuff during the week and trying to marathon a backlog title or rewatch an older show on the weekends. It's been working pretty well. I just did Basilisk this past weekend, so Haibane would be a good change of pace.

You're really missing out on one of the most genuinely touching anime out there. Haibane Renmei should be on your higher priority list.

Now if I haven't forced your eyes to roll and dismiss my comments as delusional fanboy praise, I'd like to kindly link you to banksie's site, (http://khantazi.org/Rec/Anime/Index.html) which you can check out his interpretation on Haibane Renmei's narrative after watching it; he nails the message pretty well.

All four volumes of Haibane Renmei are in the Right Stuf bargain bin right now for $9 each.
I will be nice and not say what I paid for it at the last Geneon sale. :P

And I'll be nice and not say that I bought several extra copies of Haibane Renmei to give away as gifts. That's how great of a show it is. Not to mention having to go through some effort to collect the original artbox and all the pencilboards some time back....

You want to buy Haibane Renmei. It's one of your alltime favorite series because it reaches out to you on such a philosophical level and is just plain beautiful.

:neko:

And yes, it is by the same character designer as Lain: Yoshitoshi ABe. In fact, the series was created by ABe himself as a doujin comic.

Heh, I'm going to watch it, but not after spoiling myself first :sd:

I mean, I already own it, so it's not like I have to be won over or anything, it's just a matter of all the OTHER shows in my ~250 DVD backlog fighting for limited time as well. Like I said, we'll see what happens this weekend. Depending on what I'm in the mood for, it'll be probably either Haibane or Mahoro.

as a mystery anime and for weirdness I liked it. I had a thread about questions I would have asked as a new habiremi at one point...first one was can I fly! Second was do I age...

Haibane Renmei is just a special work of art. It may seem slow and pointless for its first half, but oh boy is the last episode just so bittersweet and amazing. The payoff is simply amazing. Haibane holds the distinction of being one of the few shows that made me sit back and not do anything for half-an-hour after its ending. I guess that's my way of crying. :sd:

ok going to buy them now. That is the best recommendation I can get.

Ok bought it I gave the forum credit for the sale. Linked to it from here. It will hopefully be there for me when I get to my new place this weekend. If you want to wait we can watch it together and make a thread about it see if we can get others...I will start as soon as I get my dvd player set up at my new place!

(you should all be congradulated only the second complete series I have bought first being Now and Then here and there. Lain and Eva was given to me)

Hence why I said after watching it, otherwise I'd just be another cruel bastard out to spoil another person out of an excellent show. :>

I do hope that you get around to it soon, though, as it's something that you'll undoubtedly enjoy. Loads of atmosphere, consistently detailed animation, gorgeous art, one of the best soundtracks in anime, a simple but beautifully poignant message about life, and an endearing cast that is mostly composed of strong females... You can't ask for much more.

And regarding its slow and "pointless" beginning, I'd say it fits perfectly considering it introduces you to the Haibane of the Old Home pretty well, and also begins to outline the thematic narrative as well.

I didn't say it was pointless just slow. I also couldn't understand why she didn't ask more questions and just went with the flow so much. Did like it definitly though, just very very different from the other work the writer and director have done. Watching it after watching lain was a shock.

That comment was directed towards roastedpekingduck, who said that some may find the first half "slow and pointless," which I went on to clarify on.

Also, the writer and director behind Serial Experiments Lain are different from Haibane Renmei -- the only real link between the two is that Yasuyuki Ueda is the producer for both and Yoshitoshi ABe did the characters designs and had a hand in some way for creating the stories.

Yoshitoshi ABe did the characters designs and had a hand in some way for creating the stories.

ABe really didn't have anything to do with the story for Lain, but he had everything to do with the story for Haibane Renmei. Original concept and screenplays were all ABe's. He was the only one who could have written it, since he had no set plan for the story when he started, it was an experiment in a kind of stream-of-consciousness storytelling.

Edit:
I should add that Ueda was the one who pushed for turning the doujinshi into an anime. He must have some good credit with Pioneer/Geneon to be able to get them to fund a project like that.
