I am thinking about getting the LE version which of course features the English dub besides the English subtitles that come with the RE version. I am not familiar with this movie at all and I was poking around at Amazon Japan when I noticed that this didn't receive very favorable reviews, according to the Amazon rating anyways. I can't read Japanese, but it was obvious from the average rating that it got that it wasn't really liked by too many people in Japan. Any thoughts about this movie that might make me either decide to get it or not?

My own feelings about the movie are mixed. They seem to have taken various ideas from the six Earthsea books and put them together to form the storyline of this movie. But some of the ideas were used in a different context. That's fine (unless you're looking for a faithful adaptation) but they didn't explain why certain things happened. The animation quality in general was good, but not up to the usual Ghibli standard IMO.

On the other hand, I preferred this movie to ones like Howl's Moving Castle and Spirited Away. And it interested me enough to inspire me to re-read the Earthsea books after all these years.

I bought the LE.

For me the movie was OK. It wasn't amazing, as I had hoped (given Ghibli's previous works).

Animation quality is lower IMO than SA, Mono and Howl, but still higher quality than TV animation.

The story is kind of boring and the characters all feel uninspired.

I'd recommend the R3 set, as I believe it's the same as the R2, only cheaper.
