Have to go with the flow. Adventure mode looks more exciting this time around. Though the 2 player mode looks like an old arcade beat em' up. Not that I'm against that.
Overall, great update week. Shouldn't get my hopes up, but I'm hoping next week reveals some more character moves.

Well what do you know...I was too tired to stay up for this morning's update, but when I finally wake up no one else had reported it either. Well then, let's get started shall we? This morning's update was fairly standard: what seems to be a complete list of Zero Suit Samus' Special Moves.
B - Paralyzer - Samus shoots a paralzying pistol shot forward at her opponent. If it hits them, they are temporarily stunned, and the stunned period can be increased by charging the attack before releasing it. I have some major concerns about this attack, particularly in how easily this attack can be spammed and abused. It sounds like this attack will stop anything instantly, perhaps Final Smashes as well?
B + Down - Paralyzer (Close Range) - Sakurai only hinted at this one, but it seems this attack aims the Paralzyer at the area around Samus' feet, perhaps to aim at targets below her when standing on platforms.
B + -> - Plasma Whip - Hey Samus! Shiek just called! He wants his move back! *ahem* Just like Shiek's whip in Melee (but with apparently a FAR greater range), Samus throws a whip out of her pistol and goes all Franzchisca von Karma on her opponent (OBJECTION!). This move can tether ledges.
B + Up - Plasma Wire - GET OVER HERE! Samus fires her Plasma Whip straight up. If she makes contact with another fighter, she pulls them down towards her. If she hits a ledge with it, she's tethered up towards it. Interestingly, there seems to be no upward movement with this attack unless Samus catches a ledge...that's a very risky recovery move.
I fell asleep to. Good thing I did, that was a crappy update.

I saw it last night and it's a pretty boring update though most aren't particularly interesting I only want to see more characters and the final smash of Snake an Ike respectively. Least the Snake updates were interesting last week if nothing else.
Well we get cooking Kirby and Ashley's Song from Wario Ware. Kirby's final smash looks interesting as he puts everyone in a pot of soup then fires em out. Ashley's song is strangely addicting as this is the first time that I've heard it. I have it on loop at the moment :>

Kirby's Final Smash is...wierd, and not really all that useful unless you are really low on health. I only really one have question: once your opponents are spit back out of the pot, do they have a shot at grabbing the items that were "cooked" or does only the Kirby player have a shot at them?
Ashley's song is pretty interesting, about 10x more interesting than the actual stage this song will be playing on. It sounds very unlike typical Nintendo ditties...and for once I consider that a good thing. But who exactly IS Ashley?
On a side note, I think Sakurai's done revealing characters at this stage, as outside of Captain Falcon every standard character from Melee (or an easy substitute...looking at you, Lucas) has been confirmed for Brawl. At this point, we only have less than 8 weeks before Brawl's launch, and I get the feeling these updates are ending in early November. If we get another character reveal, it's either going to be Captain Falcon (or Gannondorf if they want to make Falcon unlockable) or a secret character that would drive up Brawl sales if revealed to the general public (like Sonic).
Otherwise, I think it's all moves; Final Smashes; stages; music; assist trophies; items; and modes from here on out. Honestly, I'm hoping we get a major increase in music updates over the next 8 weeks, as that's an area of the game I'm most interesting in hearing more about. Sakurai probably has a few more stages up his sleeve, but he's probably close to running out of those now. At least there's a ton of Final Smashes for him to release still. Pity there are probably more Assist Trophies and Item updates in the future than we ever wanted to hear...
I don't mind the music. I haven't played any of the Wario Ware games but it looks like she has her own stage in Wario Ware touch. The original Ashley's Song is a little bit more annoying. I think you'll have a lot of disappointed people if they just keep this character cast with the normal four revealed. Hopefully it won't be Jiggly again..
Snake was that "holy crap" character, I think we'll see one more before the game comes out.

Yeah, that song sounds like something from a haunted house game than a minigame collection game. Plus it sounds like it doesn't have much to do with Wario at all. Wasn't there something they could have picked that says "this is Wario's theme song"? Does it make more sense if you're a Wario Ware fan?

I'm still mad that NoA hasn't released the information as to WHY Mother 3 is a "japan-only" release. Mother 3 just came out last year. WTF?
I hope Lucas doesn't replace Ness. Lucas doesn't have as much personality as Ness did. He's just a depressing character -- from a depressing game. I heard that Clause and Porky (aka Pokey from EB) will be featured in the game. I've even heard news that the developers considered Jeff as a character (even though I think Poo would be much cooler -- PSI STARSTORM!). Who here is a Mother series fan?

It's about time we found out how Kirby's FS works. Only thing I'm curious about is if it doesn't work if your opponents aren't in close range.
And as for Ashley's theme, I kind of wish we had something from the Wario Land games as well rather than WarioWare only. But I do like Ashley's theme, though I prefer the JP version, but that's just me. Speaking of which, did anyone else notice that on the Japan page there's another audio update at the bottom of the Kirby Final Smash one?

Latest news from a Nintendo press conference: Sonic is in and can transform into Super Sonic, presumably his Final Smash. And in addition to online play, there seems to be some form of co-operative online play too.
The downside is that it's being delayed in Japan to Jan24/08. Not to be pessimistic, but I hope this doesn't affect the North American release.

Ok, folks, in keeping with the update previously mentioned from the Nintendo Press Conference, tonight's update was long-awaited: the unveiling of Sonic as a playable character in Brawl! Honestly, I'm not hot on the idea of 3rd Party characters in Smash Bros., a series about NINTENDO characters battling it out. It's a real sticking point with me and Solid Snake, considering that aside from Twin Snakes Snake hasn't been in a (non-Gameboy) Nintendo game in several decades.
Sonic, on the other hand, is a welcome addition, as he has had a very active Nintendo existence for quite some time now, and he was Mario's big rival back in the SNES/Genesis days. I'm interested to see how they tone-down his speed for the Smash universe, as ideally he should be running so fast that just keeping him ON the stage should be an issue. I just wish that his model was better textured...it's very basic.
Ok, re-commence with the pummeling. [/Mario & Luigi reference]

To be honest, some part of me wishes that he didn't make the cut again, just to piss off all the people whining about Sonic not being in Melee. This is a fighting game for Nintendo characters, folks...it's great to see Sonic there, but I hope this is the LIMIT to the 3rd Party Characters. I don't want to see this franchise to be a magnet for every 3rd party company who wants a piece of the pie. Nintendo has MORE than enough characters as it is to keep the newcomers coming.
The news about the game being delayed in Japan bothers me, as that would be an easy excuse for Nintendo to cut and run on their "Megaton" Fall 2007 lineup and start pushing back games into Winter 2008 just because Japan didn't get them. Let the Japanese play some non-game casual games this Christmas, and keep Brawl where it is in the America lineup!

Besides NOT being Sonic, what's your problem with the other newcomers? The Pokemon Trainer, despite being rather generic, has an intersting moveset and gameplay dynamic; Diddy Kong looks to be an interesting combination of Donkey Kong and Fox; and Lucas is well...alright, Lucas is kind of a lame Ness wannabe, but that's probably because we never got the game he's from in America. Pit and Meta Knight were announced long before the blog went up.
I really don't have a problem with any of the newbies outside Lucas.

'Fraid you're a bit late on the rush to update. ^_-
As I said, I'm not eager to see anymore Third Party characters, as it kind of diminishes the whole central concept of Smash Bros. However, I could live with Megaman being in the game, although with his appearances in the Marvel vs. Capcom series it seems rather unnecessary. Simon Belmont hasn't been in any Castlvania game since Super Castlevania, so I think the gaming world's kind of passed him by. He'd make a decent assist trophy, though.
Addendum: what exactly would be the point of a character from a non-Nintendo console game showing up in Brawl? PLEASE don't tell me you're referring to trash like Cloud...

I'm pretty sure Nintendo said any 3rd party character had to appear on a game for a Nintendo console. But I'd love for Mega Man and Simon. I can't be the only one that wants a Captain N reunion, can I?
(Still, I'm excited about Sonic being in the game.)
I'd heard that the Sonic fans were griping for the hedgehog to get into Smash so I guess this is fine. Not nearly as interesting as the accidental announcement of a new Mario Baseball game on the Wii, but as far as SSBB goes, it'll play.
You know what would be hilarious, though, is if someone at Microsoft bowed long enough, loud enough, with enough smacking of the forehead into the pavement, to get Master Chief into a Smash.

Not that I dislike Sonic or about the idea about third party characters in Brawl, but I just don't think he should be in it. It's great for the fans and he was one of the greatest gaming icons back in the days, but now a lot of the games he's been in end up with negative comments (like Sonic Rush Adventure though). But in the end, I'll probably be playing as him a lot in Brawl.

Woohoo, Sonic the Hedgehog at last! His move style looks much like Pikachu's (very quick in changing direction and moving), but more controlled. And it seems pretty obvious that his Final Smash entails turning into Super Sonic. I mean, it's the only logical choice, anyway.....

I would say Snake broke the tradition of Nintendo-only characters and not only was it a shock to me and others, but eventually people have welcomed the idea. Sonic, on the other hand, has been somewhat an exception to the whole Nintendo only rule. People have wanted Sonic for a very long time and finally we have got it and words can not express how happy I am to see this finally happening.
As for the release date, the US site has changed it to TBD. Damn you Nintendo! They are starting to go back to their old ways with release dates and that is not a good thing.

Sakurai did say that aside from Snake, there would be 1 or 2 more 3rd party characters.

I agree, great to see Sonic make his appearance.
Have to disagree with you on the release date change though. They changed Japan's to January so I'm sure NAs will around that date. They know we want that game which means we'll probably either get it slightly before Christmas or slightly after New Year's, but most likely before Japan's release date.
In the worst case scenario maybe we don't see the game until Feb next year (after Japan gets it), but frankly, with all the stuff coming out in the last 2 months of this year for Wii, I've got plenty to keep me playing until then.
And really, if it was Nintendo going back to its old ways, they would've pushed it to Summer 2008.

Be careful. People still can't find Wii's, PS3 prices are dropping and with the massive attack of seemingly mouthdropping games for the 360, you should probably decide sooner than later.
As for Sonic's arrival, the moment I saw the update, it was "HOLY F***!", literally. As for the delay... ...Sakurai said there was more development needed, but I'm hoping it's at least out before 2008, if not delayed at all. Shouldn't the game be in the final stages by now? Manufacturing is likely to happen about a month before the game is out.
I wonder, was Sonic a last minute addition? Is he causing the delays because they had to go back when they were seemingly far in development? So much for being speedy... :>
I'm eying a 360 and a Wii at the moment. I know the Wii is in short supply, so thats why its been on the back burner for me. The 360 is supposed to be getting a new set of chips this fall, so I'm waiting for that.
I don't think Sonic caused to much of a delay, I think they needed to go in and refine some stuff. It isn't a huge delay, but if there is one thing I learned from waiting for Twilight Princess, the hype and wait can kill a game for you.

I'm willing to bet that's the case. If Sonic really did cause the delay, then I don't mind waiting an extra month or so.
It's awesome that Sonic's in Brawl. Though Nintendo might use a stage from Sonic and the Secret Rings (or maybe one from Sonic Adventure 2 due to the SA2 music playing in the video?), it'd be awesome if Green Hill Zone were Sonic's stage.

I see what you mean. Now I'm actually psyched about Sonic in Brawl. But I notice this delay, and now it just means more days of updates. And it's starting to get boring. It's generous of Sakurai-san to even do this and a delay means making sure we don't end up with a broken game, but still...

Well, your concerns are warranted as on the smashbros website, it now lists the North American release at TBD. So it's probably coming after the Japanese release. Too bad, as Japan is now getting WiiFit on Dec 1 and is probably the reason for the SSBB delay.
Hopefully Sonic, like the Snake update isn't a big one to "tide us over". Anymore I'm starting to think that they had to put Sonic in to compensate for the delay.
Wow. With Sonic in the game now, that really seals the deal. Smash Brothers Brawl will definitely be the first game I'll get on the Wii, whenever the heck I'm going to get around to buying one.

Add me to the people who thinks Sonic's inclusion KICKS ASS :virgin: :virgin: :virgin: :virgin: . As for other Sonic characters, I'm not opposed to the idea, but unless there's tons of space in the game for a huge roster, just having Sonic's enough for now (I want Luigi to be in the game and be his own character and not a clone). But if Nintendo's got room for another Sonicverse character, Knuckles would be a welcome addition.
Mega Man would be great as well, but if he is in it, I hope Nintendo makes better use of his huge arsenal than Marvel Vs. Capcom 1 & 2 did. I'd love to see Tango's buzzsaw be one of his moves or an assist trophy since he hasn't been seen since Mega Man 4 on the Game Boy.

Great to see that Nintendo delayed Smash Bros. to add such compelling gameplay mechanics. It's Yoshi 2.0!
Yeah, I know...I'm bitter right now. I was really looking forward to Smash this December, and once again Nintendo has fallen back on their old tactics. I swear, if fracking Sonic is the reason the game's been delayed AGAIN (remember, this was supposed to be a LAUNCH GAME), I've had it with Nintendo for a while.

HOLY SHIT NINTENDO'S DELAYING A RELEASE STOP THE PRESSES
...am I the only one thinking people are over-reacting a tad?
It's not shock over Nintendo delaying a release, it's irritation that one of 4 games (Metroid Prime 3: Corruption; Mario Galaxy [maybe]; Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn; and Smash Bros. Brawl) worth playing on the Wii this year just got delayed till next year. Before Metroid came out this year, I hadn't played anything ON my Wii except Virtual Console since Twilight Princess. That's how bad the game lineup is right now, stuffed to the brim with crap and non-games. Smash Bros. Brawl is a gamer's game, and I was really looking forward to a meaty game experience (for once). That's my gripe.
If Nintendo HAD anything good to fill in the large gap Smash leaves behind it, that would be a different story...but they don't. And yeah...I'm not sold on Mario Galaxy yet after the mediocre mess that was Mario Sunshine.

They posted the Japanese release date in January so it's not delayed *that* much. And personally, I don't give a damn if it's delayed because I know when we do get it, it will be awesome and worth waiting for.
And as I recall, Smash was never meant to be a launch title, it was supposed to come out this year for the holiday and frankly I would've been surprised if it actually made it. A delay of a month or two isn't going to hurt that much with all the stuff coming out at the end of the year (I think there are like 16 titles scheduled to ship the week of Nov 12th alone) unless all you're looking for on the Wii is Nintendo first party titles.

With all the discussion about the Japanese delay, here's one thing to consider: is it possible that the Japanese delay was due to contract reasons (as in Mario and Sonic at the Summer Olympics needing to be released first before Brawl)?
With that in mind, while there may be a delay in Japan (as Mario and Sonic won't be out there until December), the American release could still go on as planned due to Mario and Sonic coming out next month.

It looks like several of the gaming sites are now confirming that the North American release of Smash Bros is now February 10.
Here's the Joystiq article (http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/11/smash-bros-brawl-delayed-in-us-until-february-10/)
Yes, I read on IGN that the development team asked for more time and the game was pushed back because of it.
This reminds me of the whole Twilight Princess delay. They totally retooled the game in that time frame from some of the early shots.

Well, Nintendo just seems to enjoy giving me reasons not to spend money on their products. Microsoft and Sony execs must be dancing in the streets, because that's one franchise juggernaut they don't have to deal with this Christmas. After all these delays, this game better be PERFECT, ESPECIALLY Adventure Mode. Frankly, this delay reeks of Nintendo's usual shell-game tactics: they saw they were #1 in console sales for the first time in over a decade, and decided they could afford to make this Christmas the "all casual game" bonanza they hyped back at E3. If there were serious flaws with Brawl, the development team would have insisted on a delay back in July or August. We wouldn't just be seeing this NOW.
It would be nice if Nintendo made up for this huge hold in their Christmas lineup with some stellar virtual console releases. How about Earthbound and Mario RPG, Nintendo?
And for the record, Nintendo hasn't had a stellar record of flawless delayed games for quite a while now. Wind Waker and Phantom Hourglass, anyone (among others)? I have no doubt that Smash will be a phenomenal game, but I just don't have that star-y eyed idealistic faith in Nintendo anymore that it seems some of you still have.
And for the record, Nintendo hasn't had a stellar record of flawless delayed games for quite a while now. Wind Waker and Phantom Hourglass, anyone (among others)?
Out of curiosity, what was wrong with Wind Waker? Or is it just that you didn't like it and therefore call it 'flawed'?
And it's curious that you neglect to mention the cannon room bug in Twilight Princess, which was only in the (somewhat rushed) Wii version but entirely absent in the (long delayed) GCN game.

My problem with Wind Waker was with the certain lack of cohesiveness the game had in its second half, as well as many design problems I had with the sailing and low dungeon count. Despite getting delayed several times for quality assurance reasons, the game STILL shipped half-finished (as can be seen with the entire Triforce of Courage fetch quest and 2 entire dungeons getting cut). As Nintendo released the game anyway, it seems they really didn't care that the game wasn't up to specs.
I actually didn't have any problems at all with Wind Waker's visual style, if that's what you're driving at. Nintendo doesn't always delay games just to polish them. They frequently delay them just to sell them at another time.
I don't mention the Twilight Princess Wii bug because I think you have to be TRYING to trigger it to get it. There is no REASON for you to save your game in that room, and it's not like they delayed the GameCube version just to fix it, as they announced the GC version's delay long before the Wii version's release. They wanted it out of the way to reinforce sales of the Wii version. The folks behind the GC version had nothing better to do, so they fixed the bug while they had time.
More filler today with a note about the delay and that Smash Brothers will be playable at E for All next week. Besides that you have snapshot mode, which could be kind of interesting.
At the very least the snapshots are feasible. In Melee, you had to go into a separate mode just to be able to do anything, and even then there wasn't much to do with them.
Anyway, with such big news from coming over the past week, this little update isn't too bad.

I like the addition of Sonic in the game, and actually was surprised that they announced him before release at all. I was kinda hoping that he would be a secret until found in the game after it came out, to actually have a giant in-game surprise for like the first time since the death of Arieth in FFVII. But like a lot of us here,it was probably done to smooth over the delay. I can't say I mind the delay. Sure it will suck that I won't be able to play it this December, but it's ~$40 less for me to spend this season (when my employee discount and the $5 I already paid to reserve it is considered) which never hurts. I just hope the delay does a bit more than tweak out things. I'd personally like to see online being touched up some more, and with version 3.1 of the Wii firmware being released a couple days ago, I don't think it would be improbable of them to add the ability to add USB keyboard support for the online mode.
New Pork City was the update. This stage is.. well... holy crap. This is refreshing compared to most of the crap stages we've seen since the start.

Well, for those keeping score (and in general still giving a damn) with Smash Bros. Brawl, tonight's update was a new stage: New Pork City. And it's...just as spectacularly lazily designed as the others. Based on what I can only assume is Mother 3 (I don't remember a New Pork City in Earthbound), the stage consists of a bunch of floating platforms spread out over a large area of nothingness with a vast city displayed in the background. Yes folks, this is just what Smash Bros. needed: another stage consisting of floating platforms with no interaction with the environment. It's cut & paste stage work! *ahem* In any case, I suppose the stage isn't COMPLETELY non-interactive: there is an instant-kill creature that wanders the floating platforms named the Ultimate Chimera. If it hits you, you die. Simple enough, eh?
I suppose there are three bright sides to this update:
1. It's a Mother Series stage.
2. It's a pretty big stage (Sakurai compared it to the Melee Temple stage in scope), so there's plenty of room to wander around...kind of.
3. The stage does look nice, provided you can ignore the fact that there's a nice big city area behind you that's just for scenery.
Tonights update is just that damn home running hitting mini game. God I hate that thing as I never could do it. Apparently two can do it now, so woop de freaking do.

Holy shit man Little Mac. That cracked me up when I saw it (in a good way ;) ). I wish they'd made him an actual playable character. They could've had a move where Doc hops out and rubs your shoulder for energy (or whatever that percentage thing is called in SB).
If Mac were a character instead of a trophy …
I can see it now. Little Mac's final smash: "I can't win, Doc!" he complains. Doc jumps out of wherever, pats his shoulders. "Join the Nintendo Fun Club today, Mac!" And then, bam. Little Mac starts coruscating like he'd touched a Starman (SMB) and every punch he lands is a knockout.
But they'd need Soda Popinski to be an Assist Trophy if they did that. (I don't say Super Macho Man because his metrosexual pec-wiggling would make the game M-rated.)

Honestly, I didn't think Peach could get any more lame attacks, but tonight's update certainly proved me wrong on that point: the Peach Blossom Final Smash! Peach temporarily puts all her foes to sleep as she performs a dance, and then a rain of peaches fall from the sky for her to either eat for health or throw at her sleeping foes for damage. LAME! Where's the power of PMS, damnit?!
By the way, you guys should check out these videos from Game Trailers. Adventure Mode's starting to look REALLY promising:

The thing is, with a little tweaking this could have been a neat Final Smash. If this had been one of say 3 different phases of the attack (using the Super Princess Peach model, let's say this was "Sad"), perhaps a really cool "Mad" and "Happy" phase could really up the notch. Peach was extremely weak in Melee, so if she's the same in Brawl this could have made up for that. But as it is, it's very similar to Diddy and Kirby's Final Smashes.

Tonight's update was just plain bizzare, and I couldn't possibly introduce it any better than Sakurai himself did:
"There are only a few nonsense stages in the only "slightly" nonsensical Smash. But there isn’t any stage more nonsensical than this.
PictoChat?! What is THIS?!"
That's right...we have a stage based on the DS Pictochat program, where the stage itself is modeled after the Black & White color model of the Melee Game & Watch stage. However, every few minutes, one of your characters "draws" (there's a text bubble saying they're doing it anyway) the new look of the stage in vector art. Naturally, the dynamic of the stage changes every time the stage is "re-drawn," so check it out on the site for more information.
Man, though...that's a LOUSY selection of musice to choose from for that stage, though. What a freaky stage! I can't say it's likely I'm actually going to be playing much of it, though.
You wanted something more than a jump-around-on-platforms stage, buddy. I'd say you got your wish! ;) It kind of reminds me of Vib-Ribbon, in a mildly perverse way.
It reminds me of Mr. Game and Watch's place in SSBM. It looks kind of neat as it can change a couple times. If SSBM ends up coming in at a 7.0-8.0, the stages will be the downfall.

I'll believe it when I see it, but Mega Man is near the top of my list for other third party characters I'd like to see in Smash. He's right after Terra, Celes, Edgar and Sabin from FF6 (or 3 as it was called back in the day).
I was also reminded of Game & Watch's stage. But to make this feature worth it, you should be able to doodle a stage with the DS or Wii and fight in it.
I've always wanted Mega Man, because he would give Kirby a run for his money when it comes to copy powers. Plus, I hope his costumes span the whole Mega Man franchise.
But if he were in it, I guess asking for Zero would probably be hoping for to much.

2 updates tonight, one lame and one cool hidden within the text of the former. First off, the Target Smash mode from the past 2 Smash games is back, but expanded with 5 difficulty levels and the inclusion of items in some levels to add an element of strategy to the mix.
Of MUCH greater interest, though, was Sakurai's mention that Brawl will let you record up to 3 minutes of gameplay footage from both Brawls and Target Smash! Once recorded, you can send those videos to your friends ala Halo 3. I'm kind of bummed that you only get 3 minutes of footage, but it's better than nothing. I do wonder, however, how many videos you can record and how many blocks they take up on the Wii's flash drive. Still, if you want to record full matches, set your Brawls to 3 minutes or less.
So far, this has actually been a fairly decent week on the updates. Let's see if that lasts...
I like the idea of being able to record matches and various things. If Nintendo ever has a nationwide tourney you could tape matches you have with others and learn from them.

King Dedede is the main enemy of most of the Kirby games, and he's a pushover ever single time. This guy's only in Brawl because Sakurai worked on the Kirby games (hell, ditto for Meta Knight), because I can't honestly see this guy being that popular.
The sad thing about the Kirby series is that there's a lot of potential in the license Nintendo will NEVER use, instead using it as a guinea pig whenever they want to experiment on a franchise no one cares about. Kirby Super Star on the SNES was the first and LAST time Nintendo really probed the depths of what the franchise could do, and it was an awesome game. I'm really looking forward to THAT game on Virtual Console.

King Dedede, while not exactly a well-known villian, still should be a fun update. People seem to complain, but really; Kirby is one of Nintendo's most well-known characters, and the series was kind of always screwed over in Smash Bros. It nice to see the Kirby series get more recognition is this game.

I guess for once I'll be unlike most everyone else and NOT be pessimistic about every freaking update, and say that I like the addition of teh King Dedede. I've always liked the idea of using a hammer, and Ice Climbers never really did it for me, so I'm hoping Dedede's style will be Ice Climber-ish, except tuned for a single character and without ice and hopefully more control. Though he's a heavyweight and will be slow, he looks like he'll at least be faster than Bowser but maybe slower than DK.
At first I was hoping one of his special moves or final smash could be him riding around unstoppably on his scooter bike like in Kirby Air Ride, but that would be too much like Wario's motercycle move, probably. So, maybe something else.

Fantastic update! I haven't been happy with many of the stages announced so far for Brawl, so I'm thrilled that Sakurai took the time to put in a full-fledged level editor for us to play with! It could do with some added features (more interactive stage elements; stage shifting; and a wider pallet option, for example), but this is essentially exactly what I want in a stage editor. You can even transmit the stages to your friends (Sakurai made a point to mention SD card storage, so these things probably add up in size quickly), and it seems Nintendo will send a new user-created stage to Wii owners every day through Wii Connect 24. Just a great way to start off the week. ^_^

I hope this guy doesn't end becoming overpowered. IGN's playtest showed him to be a real powerhouse, moves like this make you wonder if you're going to have to learn him just to counter him.
I wouldn't worry about him being too powerful. The folks at Nintendo World Report mentioned in their most recent Impressions on Brawl that Meta Knight is built similar to Jigglypuff or Kirby: he has some powerful and swift attacks, but a single love tap from an opponent sends him flying.
As for tonight's update, it's definitely a cool attack, but I can't get a real feel for it from these screenshots. It's probably something you have to see in motion.

And at the very least, it's good that not every Final Smash is a "rape everybody no matter where the hell you are always" attack. At least you actually have to aim this one specifically and not miss - makes it more interesting.

Short range Final Smashes still have a good possiblity of hitting all other characters because everybody will be scrambling for the powerup, so they'll probably be within striking distance. Plus, some Finals look a little hard to control- Diddy and Yoshi, so I wonder if it's worth grabbing.
I really worry about this SD card stuff. I hope this will resolve some SD related issues with the Wii- namely transferring SD card data.
I had wanted let some friend try out the shooting range stages in RE4, but my game save on the SD card didn't work on his Wii.
While the new level editor does allow for sending friend stages via the Wii Message Board, not all routers work well with the Wii. That's what happened with a friend of mine, so using SD cards to trade data would be the only option.
And the whole 1 new stage every day could be a problem if a: you aren't at home to download the new stage and b: you've run out of room. I've heard the Wii has a SD card limit of 2 Gb.

Just a new movie with Fox helping Diddy out with a lake monster and the Fire Emblem theme.
For once, Fox was something of a badass with the way he dealt with that lake monster, although I'm kind of surprised that Sakurai didn't use an existing Nintendo enemy for that lake monster. The new Fire Emblem theme kicks ass, although I REALLY hope there's more to the song than the slow march portion that Sakurai posted to the site.
Edit: Ok, apparently the lake monster is a Pokemon called Rayquaza, so Sakurai was using an existing Nintendo character.
I believe all of the songs are basically "samples" of longer versions.

Yeah, but usually the samples have been at the beginning of the song. In any case, I'm still hoping that the synthesized samples we've heard were just that: samples of music not yet orchestrated. Hell, if Mario Galaxy can get full orchestrated music, why not Smash (which to me is a much bigger game)?
In something like Galaxy music is more of a main focus since it's mostly a platformer and you're running around with Mario. While I don't want to short change Smash Brothers or any other fighting game outside of Guilty Gear you're more focused on the action itself. It's looking more and more like what Nintendo did with Twilight Princess where they chose certain tracks to orchestrate.

Hell, if Mario Galaxy can get full orchestrated music, why not Smash (which to me is a much bigger game)?
Might have to do with the fact that SMG is being developed at Nintendo R&D1, while SSBB is a HAL Laboratory production. Might have to do with the fact that SMG is a Mario game, which SSBB isn't. Might have to do with the fact that SMG completes the Holy Wii Trinity, along with Twilight Princess and MP3, whild SSBB is a side project.
I, fully aware that SSBM is the top-selling Cube game, say these things.

Considering that (using the sales of Melee as my basis) Brawl will probably outsell the ENTIRE "Holy Wii Trinity," (definitely more than Twilight Princess and Prime 3 combined, anyway) that's pretty interesting. I'm more inclined to believe that bit about the different divisions being responsible for these games.
Of course, I'm even more inclined to believe it's because Nintendo is pretty fracking cheap when it comes to pulling out its wallet for production values.

Nintendo built a new studio in Tokyo to develop Brawl. It doesn't sound like they just commissioned the game and then didn't give the production team a lot of money.
I know that the original Smash Bros. was a very low budget game (by Nintendo standards at the time with titles like Mario 64 and Zelda: OoT) and that a lot of characters that were in Melee could not be included because of the lack of time and money.
I'm not sure what the budget is on Brawl but it seems to be pretty high. They created a new studio in Tokyo, they hired a number of composers and they are licensing third-party characters.

Two updates again. One of which would really piss people off if it were the sole update and another is an "awesome" update.
The "lame" update:

It talks about how you grab and throw characters.
Now the "awesome" update:
http://www.smashbros.com/en_us/items.../assist11.html
Gray Fox (from Metal Gear Solid) is an assist trophy. But I do think Sakurai is teasing us a bit with the Gray Fox update.
He approaches stealthily with lithe jumps, coming right in then slicing repeatedly. Awww! It makes you want to use him as a playable character.
What a tease!
And yes, this confirms third party characters as assist trophies. Odds are Tails will be an assist trophy.

The lava actually looks like lava now rather than citric acid. The hatch gives it that nice Metroid feel to it.
If characters are going to have more than one theme stage again, I'm hoping that the landing site is another one just for that feeling of fighting in the rain. I mean, I like this stage for Brawl, but it would be nice if Sakurai would expand on Metroid Land rather always be in an underground tunnel with rising lava.
I'll concur with that. I think a Phendrana Drifts stage, complete with rising water (and rising platforms), destroyable stalactites, and mostly-invisible flying things would be good stuff.
You know what else would be awesome, is a Pipe City stage with all manner of Piranha Plants popping out everywhere and those little uprooted Piranha Plants walking around and munching on everybody. Once that stage was out there, I'd never hear another complaint again from broodwars wishing there were more interactive stages.

I won't be capitalizing on adding messages with the taunts (looks like they cover too much of the screen), but I like that there are three taunts for every character. Finally I don't have to ALWAYS do the long grow-big taunt every time I want to taunt with Mario.
And the fanboy in me wishes that one of Sonic's taunt could be him eating a chilidog, but that's not really a staple of the games, so oh well.
This update was kind of neat seeing the taunts and the fact that I can make Snake go into his box at will.
I kind of liked the "big Mario" taunt. I'd always do it after knocking someone out as a way of kind of going "Bitch!".

Don't get me wrong, I like that taunt too. It's just that, sometimes I like to challenge myself and throw a taunt in when it's dangerous to take the time to taunt. And that one takes so long, so it's a little too dangerous.
It's funny, I always thought Snake's box would be his shield. Y'know, like how Yoshi has his egg, Snake would have his box.
Hopefully the taunting mechanics aren't deeper then the actual fighting mechanics :>

Unfortunately, Sakurai set himself up for this by not spreading these mode updates out more when there were real updates to put up. Now it's painfully obvious that we're at the tail end of the updates he has to offer, so we're getting all the crap that he didn't want to put up earlier. Today we get two updates. One is Meta Knight's move set, the other is Meta Knight's stage music. The move set is solid but the music sounds like mediocre Mega Man stage music. For a game with such an ambicious soundtrack, most of the tracks they've released are just lame. I expected them to step up harder than this music-wise.

While the moveset isn't anything new, I like the Meta Knight arrangement music. As Sakurai stated, it has that nice jazz feel. Not original, kind of catchy.

If they don't, I'm sure we'll see some very big accusations of favoritism since Sakurai created Meta Knight.
So it appears that you can watch other people duke it out over the WiFi Connection. That's nothing special. What's awesome is that you can bet on the outcome! Coins and "other prizes" go to the victor. Online poker? Yesterday's news.

I liked Wario better when he was the Venom to Mario's Spider-Man, or at least when he was a thuggish badass trying to get rich by robbing pirates. I mean he robbed pirates. FREAKING PIRATES!!!! How do you ignore that kind of kickassedness?
Since Wario became Mr. Mini-Game Guy he's just become irrelevant :sigh: . If Wario's classic costume isn't availble in the game I probably won't play as him at all unless I have to do so to unlock something or that Emmisary mode thingie requires it. Sorry Mateo, but today's update is...
Events!!
Events are specially set up matches with special objectives, plus you compete against the clock for time records. These sound fun. Definetely a better update than yesterday's. Nothing Pokemon related though :nahnah: .

Well, events were in Melee, too, but it looks like the events here might have had a little more thought put into them. (most of the Melee events were just 'you're this character and you have to beat this/these character(s)')
I liked the events in SSBM but the range of difficulty was to high. You'd go from a cakewalk to a "oww my ass" event sometimes back to back.

Ah well, it was worth a shot. And it can't hurt being wrong. :nahnah:
I like that in event mode this time you can choose the A.I. difficulty setting rather than it being very easy for the early ones and getting harder for the later ones. Now all that leaves is All-Star mode. As for tomorrow...honestly, I'm more concerned on what Monday's update will be. Since it was the originally announced day for the game's release. But I'm not going to hold my breath.

Melee Stages!
Just like in Melee, it seems that Brawl will contain some stages from the previous game in the series. And, at the very least, one of those stages is to be Hyrule Temple.

Thank God they're bringing back what I consider to be one of (if not "the") best stage from Melee, and hopefully some of my other favorites like Fourside, Onett Town, Pokemon Stadium 1, Great Bay, and Pokefloats. The selections of returning stages in Melee were so pitiful that I can only hope for the best here.
That Zelda 2 remix is outright horrible, turning a really great Melee mix into something really lame.
Catching up on a few updates I haven't commented on, due to lack of interest:
-Wario's Final Smash is pretty damn wierd, and only further ensures that I will never play as that character unless I have to to unlock something.
-I really don't like the remix of the Donkey Kong arcade tune. Then again, I never liked that tune in the first place.
-Event mode was always my favorite part of Melee, and the part of the game where most of my skills came from. I am glad the mode's getting difficulty settings this time, as there were some incredibly hard missions randomly strewn throughout the list last time.
-Widescreen Support: *yawn* Like we haven't seen this in every OTHER Wii game. Nothing to see here, folks...move on.
-Lucas' Final Smash: The final nail in the coffin for Ness, but this Final Smash is just awesome.
And btw, considering the kind of updates we got this week, it's obvious that Sakurai is nearly out of stuff to show. We know he has a few more Final Smashes (Zelda and Snake, off the top of my head), a few more assist trophies (I know the Advance Wars one hasn't come up yet), probably a few more stages, and a few more Pokemon and general items to show. There's also All-Star mode to reveal. After that, the updates will either stop or he'll start revealing secret characters (i.e. the "unlockable" ones) and more of the Subspace Emissary mode.
I really hope they don't add the Melee stages and claim "TONS OF NEW STAGES" and use them as padding

This has to be the best update this month. I know we saw it coming, but I like that some old stages are coming back. Hmm...wonder if this means some N64 stages will return.
There is that rumor on Dec. 15 Corocoro magazine is going to reveal the starting line-up. It would be funny if no new characters were amongst them.
And if you guys want a lame Final Smash update, just wait until it Zero Suit Samus' turn. :P
It might not be lame at all- If suited Samus Final Smash is that she loses her armor, what would Zero Suit Samus lose?

The game's E 10+ ESRB rating. *rimshot*
Seriously, I wouldn't be surprised if Zero Suit Samus didn't HAVE a Final Smash. After all, Zero Suit Samus enters the game after Samus has already used her Final Smash, so I don't see why she would have another one in a new form.

While it would have fit better with the standard suit, I'm thinking something along the lines of the Mega Beam (was that what it was called) from the very end of Super Metroid.

The problem is that giving Zero Suit Samus a Final Smash would be breaking one of Brawl's already-stated rules: each player only gets one Final Smash at most during a match/life (the site hasn't been clear if losing a life during a match resets the Final Smashes). If Zero Suit Samus had a Final Smash, that would give Samus players 2 Final Smashes in a given match. Given how ridiculously powerful the Final Smashes are, that's not exactly fair.

Did Samus's final smash just remove the armor or did it actually attack as well? If it did attack, then it would make sense for there not to be a Final Smash for Zero Suit Samus.

Wait, where does it say that a player can only get one Final Smash a match? I don't remember that.
However, isn't it possible to begin a match AS Zero-Suit Samus - seeing as how they've introduced her as a seperate character, and not just a 'transformation' ala Zelda and Shiek? Just as not having a Final Smash would make it more fair regarding those who started as Regular Samus, it would make it unfair to those who started as Zero-Suit Samus, since she would never be able to Final Smash. In that case, it seems like whether she has a Final Smash or not, someone will find an unfair aspect about it.
Here's a simple solution: if you were Samus and you used your Final Smash to become Zero-Suit Samus, you become unable to use any Final Smash that Zero-Suit Samus may have. But if you start a match as Zero-Suit Samus, you can still use said Final Smash normally since you started as, and didn't BECOME, Zero-Suit Samus. That would be easy to do.

"The Final Smash is a secret skill that can be performed but once…and only after obtaining an item called the Smash Ball, which is a precious item, indeed."
As for Zero Suit Samus, I've always assumed she was ONLY playable after obtaining and using Samus' Final Smash. However, if she was playable on her own, I wouldn't object to her having a Final Smash so long as (as per your suggestion) she couldn't use it if transformed from Samus Standard.

You break open a smash ball and use the power of the final smash once. To use a final smash again, you have to wait for another smash ball. More than one smash ball can appear in a match.
(And ZSS Final Smash basically has her putting her armor back on.)

In tonight's update, Sakurai announced a bunch of returning Pokemon coming to Brawl from Melee, including Enzei; Celebei; Mew; etc. Mew and Celebei will randomly drop valuable rare items like CDs or whatnot.
In related news, Sakurai, no one cares. Personally, I wish the Assist Trophies had just replaced the damn Pokemon. More Assist Trophies mean more neat cameos from Nintendo games past, present, and future. If I want Pokemon in my Brawl, I'll play as one. At least it's nice that Celebei and Mew can drop rare items, although I really hope that's not the only way to get them. -_-'

Some interesting kernels of information hidden away in tonight's updates: "The Battle for the Smash Ball" (aka "How to use your Final Smash") and "X-Tunnel Scene" (a music update).
1. Some Final Smashes have to be aimed while you are still in "standby mode" (your character is glowing after obtaining the Smash Ball, but you haven't used the B special to activate it yet).
2. In matches where there is an overwhelming point advantage, the losing character may materialize in Final Smash standby mode to give them a fighting chance to get back in the match. This is also known as "Look kids! It's the return of the damn Blue Seeker Shell from Mario Kart!" Also known as the "Mario Kart rubber band" effect. Perhaps we'll see an update from Sakurai stating that the worth of the items you get from the item capsules are inversely proportional to your current ranking in the match. Well, kidding aside it certainly could at least cause some noise during matches.
3. The music you collect on the CDs aren't all necessarily from the games showcased on the Smash Bros. stages. "X - Tunnel Scene" is from a Japan-only Gameboy game, chosen by Sakurai's sheer whim. Honestly, I don't know what to think of that, as it sounds like a really cheap way for 3rd parties to get an easy nod without really having to do anything. It also means we could see a LOT of music from games no one in America has ever played.
Of course, there is no X stage in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, but this time, the songs in Smash Bros. aren’t limited only to those series represented by characters and stages. We’ve pulled some that are from completely unrelated games.

Well, that's basically the jist of it in terms of details. It's just like his B-Forward Special, except it happens continuously for the duration of the Final Smash, and the Waddle Dees are faster. And likewise, a Gordo will sometimes appear in the mix of all the Waddle Dees.

Today's update discusses random match setups. There are two main notes in today's updates. One is if you're playing random matches and an opponent's connection dies, the cpu will automatically take over. This feature won't be availble in matches with Wii Friends though.
The other is that if your opponent selects a hidden character, it's identity will be spoiled for you, but he says because of the speed things get around on the internet spoilers can't be helped so he's not worrying about it. He just says you should unlock the other characters before going into online battles if you don't want to get spoiled.

This update will certainly bore some, but I like the idea that there's a Pokemon that you HAVE to actually do something with to make it useful, instead of just releasing it and letting it do the dirty work for you......even if that work IS just a simple throw.
So, considering the note on damage, I'm guessing this can be like a semi-baseball bat if used properly?

That is mostly all that I'm noticing, too. Now everyone just whines about every freaking update. What everyone needs to realize is that most of the good updates have passed already - everything in a game can't be totally awesome amazing.
The problem is, Sakurai promised that he'd update every weekday until release. That's a lot of days. So it's inevitable that he's gonna have to pull some of the updates out of his ass and announce some things that are really obvious or bland.
