Going only on release catalog #s, how many in your collection, all regions.

I've 819 discs (don't have it written down by SKUs). It's kind of scary.

I have a "small" collection of between 180-250 discs. It's considered small here, but I still never cease to shock any of my classmates.

I don't know about "release catalog #s." Not what they are or where to find them.
I have 1029 entries in my collection at DVD Aficionado, so I went by that.

I currently own 383 DVDs. This goes by number of discs (excluding extras-only discs). For example, each YYH collection counts as 2 DVDs, but the Hellsing LEs only count as 1 each.

402 discs of anime according to my DVDAF listing.

Maybe I should have gone with the 258 titles to be more correct? I already voted in the 400-499 category though... :sigh:

I have a "small" collection of between 180-250 discs.

In my case I have about 110 discs. Which includes the 4 discs I'm waiting to receive. 3 being part of the Galaxy Angel Z Collection and 1 being from To Heart. Note in the case of stuff Seraphim Call since it was two discs in a single volume I counted it as two discs.

Obviously it would be less if you were to consider Seraphim Call a single entry and count something like the Petite Princess Yucie collection as one instead of five. Either way regardless of how one counts it, I'm still under the first option myself.

So yeah with about 110 discs, I won't be able to brag to you and humble you. Darn it, I need someone with only 5 discs to post. :P Either way given the current series I'm working, I should hopefully be adding 21-25+ discs in the future. The range depends on how far I take Galaxy Angel and the + assumes I'll likely start up other series in the future or complete them in one fell swoop by obvious mean.

"Going only on release catalog #s"
I have no way of counting that without doing it manually, and don't see the point in counting one single as being the same as one 10 disc boxset, so I'm gonna give the per-disc number, which is the way I prefer to track it.

Currently 670 discs. Obviously counting sets as one makes that less, but I'm not gonna try and figure it out.

HitokiriShadow

I got around one hundred fifty DVDs, though that's including some pre-orders. Have two hundred eighty-some disks, too.

Though it'll temporarily go down since there is a series or two I'll probably end up selling once I see them in full again. Ergo Proxy is the most likely candidate as it doesn't hold up as well the second time around since its flaws are too glaringly obvious. Air is the only other series I'm also considering.

I'm in the gray area between 700-1000. I typically count sets as just one so that deflates the numbers (731), but a rough estimate based on discs would place me at the upper end of that range. Let me tell you, having a collection that size can be a nuisance. Having just recently moved, it was a bitch having to pack all those discs and haul 'em across the city. :sigh:

One day, I should sit down and tabulate just how much money I've spent over the years. Probably, like roastedpekingduck has said, it's enough to pay for a year of private school tuition (especially if one included the manga collection, too). I don't know about two years; I grew up around some pretty expensive private schools, though, I never went to any of them. Well, I'm comforted by the fact that those thousands were spread out over a few years and not just...all in one go. O.O

Yeah, like... Outlaw Star in those 2 disc sets would be 3 catalog numbers, Pretty Sammy sets would come to 2, and what have you. It would be a bit of work for me to put that list together. And I'm in the middle of hugely overhauling my anime spreadsheet now so I don't cant to add any work for myself :sd:

I did the poll this morning but did not respond at that time but it is over 550. I tried counting twice but could not get a final number because of interruptions and I remembered I have lent a large number of series and DVDs out. But I do have over 550 currently in the case next to me. But my real number could be somewhere between 600-750

There was a thread in OT a while back about losing your entire collection and whether or not you'd restart from the beginning. I said I'd restart (but I'd cry a puddle first... :( ). I agree with you; it's probably tough as hell being a new fan and being confronted with literally hundreds of great series already released (and many OOP). I'm glad I started collecting when anime was just hitting the airwaves and before its explosion in popularity.

I can't imagine just now discovering anime...and having to backtrack while keeping up with new releases. :sd:

Ha, private schooling. Man, does that bring back memories...

Jesus, no wonder it's so intimidating being a new fan when there are so many shows one has to consider purchasing.

Which makes it all the better when one starts to realize that he/she is near the end of the tunnel and is close to only worrying about future releases. After all these years, I've finally reached that point -- it helps being "picky," or however the hell you want to describe it.

roastedpekingduck
08-18-2007, 09:53 PM
I've almost reached that point as well. There's some "older" releases I still really want (08th MS Team, Princess Tutu, GitS:SAC 2nd Gig) and some old things I still may not pick up but likely ever wont (Niea_7, Gunslinger Girls, Basilisk, Barefoot Gen, Master Keaton), but I'm nearing the "preorders only" point.

I remember how hard it was for me to start ordering series after I became really interested in anime after seeing NTHT two and something years back. There were just SOOOO many options. I'm extremely happy that I had a string of great blind recommendations back then, so I had purchased several awesome series before finally meeting up with a bad one.

Just out of curiosity Hellkorn, for how many years have you been an anime fan? We're pretty near in age and have similarly-sized collections, though I must say I'm extremely impressed at how much stuff you've managed to watch, not to mention read, as you seem to be a heavy manga-reader as well. I couldn't get into manga if I tried right now because, frankly, I don't know where I would find the time to both read manga and watch anime.

Picked 1000-2999. Looking at my database, I'm currently standing at 1,669 discs. If I had to take a guess, the number would probably drop by 500 if I went by release catalog #s. 7 of the discs are R2s (Sailor Stars and Vol. 4 of SMR).

08-18-2007, 10:23 PM
Just out of curiosity Hellkorn, for how many years have you been an anime fan?

Four to five years, leaning towards the latter. Technically I've been a fan longer than that, but it's been a kind of off and on relationship with the fandom. I've gotten by with money from odd-jobs since I've been too damn lazy to actually work part-time yet, along with a birthday that is only a little over a week before Christmas.

Similarly with manga, save for perhaps Lone Wolf and Cub, I've pretty much bought whatever is currently available that I'm interested in English -- Japanese is another matter.

roastedpekingduck
08-18-2007, 10:26 PM
Oh wow, four to five years? Did you start with the same kind of anime you watch now? I admit glancing at some more complex anime about five years back when I was 11 courtesy of a family friend who had gone to college, but I was nowhere near mentally mature enough too appreciate that kind of stuff at the time. It's actually a good thing I rediscovered anime three years later because of how much I had grown mentally.

It would certainly be overwhelming getting in now, but new fans these days have an advantage: lots of cheap collections. Sure, some things are OOP, but most shows shouldn't be too hard to find in a collection.

I have 708 as of last count (not including R2s and R3s, which would make it over 800). Been collecting since August of 2000, and my buying trends have changed a lot since then. Went from "buying whatever looks/sounds good" to "just buy what you like" to "buy it if it sounds fanservicy enough." :sd: As for retailers, I've probably used close to a dozen now, many of which are now defunct thanks to the whole Internet bubble bursting (ah, back then getting 40+% off on pre-orders was common).

But looking over my collection it's interesting to see how the industry trends have changed over the course of seven years, such as when they were still doing DVD/VHS releases of older catalog titles, followed by the onslaught of box sets (Vol.1 + artbox for almost everything coming out), to the gradual scaling back and streamlining that we see today. Likewise a lot of the shows I own have had their fair share of controversy associated w/ them, mostly from the whole "it's too out there to appeal to R1 audiences" (shows like Azudai and Excel Saga), to "it's been fansubbed to death and so doesn't have a snowball's chance in hell of coming out over here" (shows like Love Hina).

Makes me wonder how things will be another 7 years from now (ah, I'm gettin' old!).

But yeah, I started buying around 2000-2001 too, but not heavily until ~2004 ot 2005, and especially in the last two years or so. Missed the .com bubble deals.

Honestly speaking even now since my collection is not that large there are still a lot of older choices for me in addition to the constant new choices. Which is why I've eventually decided that rather than be concerned about keeping up with everything, I'd just concern myself with a few select series. Only after enough progress was made would I worry about anything else. Once once realizes it's futile to keep with everything and becomes more relaxed and selective things work out better.

11 shelves each shelf with about 45-55 discs on it, (not including 2 boxes of DVD's relegated to the cupboard - about 30 DVDs) and the 3 shelves of live action (non anime) DVD's.

So between 500-599 for me,

It would be a lot more but I have a high rotation of ebaying series I no longer want, it would be +another 100-200 DVD's if I didn't sell them on.

I think it is close to the 200 mark. Small compared to some of you. :) I am very happy with most of the things I do have like the ABe stuff, Sailor Moon and Ghibli. Most of the anime I have are things I just can't be without. I still have a lot of VHS. When DVD got going I was in a rest period. I have some region 2 that a friend brings back for me. He goes to Japan a number of times a year and will "surprise" me unless I make specific requests.

I have many more DVDs if I count the non-anime stuff but the number is hard to estimate. Same with the VHS stuff. I still have some laser discs around here and even a few of the vinyl video discs that an old friend was into way back when.

I got the Sailor Moon first two season sets at Beguiling here in TO. The total was about $300. They sold out there long ago. :( I found the 3rd and 4th season sets used in thinpack. They were not cheap either. I have Stars but would love to replace it.

Vinyl video discs were a short lived thing. I understand ;) they came along in the early days around the end of BETA and beginning of VHS. They were the size of a Laser Disc but worked with a player that had a stylus as opposed to a laser. The video quality was great for the time but the discs were easily scratched and rendered useless. The stylus would wear out fairly quickly too. RCA used to make the players among other companies.

It's been a while since I did an inventory, but I'd estimate somewhere right around 900 disks, about 350 of which are backlog.

I need to stop getting more until I catch up, but I keep finding crazy deals over and over, getting really good series for 25 - 50 cents an episode. (All legit R1, of course.) I just can't say no when I can consistently get a whole Thinpack/Economy pack/Anime Legends box of an entire 13-26 episode show for the same amount I used to pay for a single disk.

I remember threads where we would post based on how many disks we had by each company (ADV/Bandai/Geneon). I'll have to think about starting one of those again, but it looks like it'd quite a job for most of us to figure that out.

271 titles / 345 discs according to my DVD AF

Missing 1 disc though since they still don't have .Hack//Roots Vol. 3 in the database.

Seeing the replies makes me think I have too many discs. If I only count HD discs (Blu-ray and HD DVD), I have around 90 (mostly not anime, of course). As for regular DVDs, I have about 350 anime DVDs and about 600 live-action titles. And this is after a generous amount of culling. :sd: I've been buying DVDs since 1998.

We talking only anime or dvds in general? If I use the anime filter in DVDprofiler, I show around 450 (not sure how accurate that is). The whole collection would over 2800. I don't plan to find out how many discs that is (if it went in as a boxset, it is counted as 1).

My main problem at the moment is that I ran out of shelf space due to a recent 25 for 100 sale and Ikea discontinued the dvd racks I used. Now I gotta find a new shelf unit. :(

according to DVDAF, my collection is at "owned (1/2324)"...

but there are several dozen more not in the database because DVDAF has no listing of them...

actual DVD count is probably close to 3200+ because some boxsets have several DVDs....

my DVD collection was featured on AnimeNewsNetwork's Shelf Life couple months back...

Looks like the average collection size of vocal AoD's posters is between 700-900. O.O The scary thought is that that much anime DVDs could probably have paid for two years of my private high school tuition.

Heh, I bet my parents wish they had sent me to that school. Mine was up to 10k a year my senior year, and that was over 10 years ago now. My dad commented that if it werent for room and board and travel, my college tuition would have been cheaper.

Anyhoo. I'm well over 2k individual SKU's. I dont usually count it that way, but since I have few collections, pretty much every show I bought was an individual disc anyway. Only a few shows like Inu Yasha and Kenshin I bought in season sets. Since I just finished bookcase 10, and each bookcase holds 50 standard keepcases, I know I'm somewhere close to 2500 discs.

Of course, I've been collecting Anime on DVD since it first came out on the format. Having mostly skipped VHS knowing DVD was coming out. And as with any hobby, it's easier to keep up when you started at the beginning than if you started halfway through.

I have roughly 2050 discs. My wife has around 500.

Quite a few of these were bought as collections - however they could just have as easily have been bought as singles (timing issue only), so I don't differentiate in my list.

Well I'm in that over 1000 category with a back log to watch of over 200. Like most others its because I find to many good deals that I can't say no to.

My school actually should be 20k a year, but because my family can't afford it, and I get pretty kickass grades, the school gives me quite a bit of financial aid. It's actually quite a scary thought that even as much as a 1000 disc collection couldn't pay for a year of my school at full tuition (which some of the richer parents at my school pay without a second thought.)

I have about 425 or so, not counting the ones I have sold or trade in at places. If I still ahd the ones I've sold, I would be at the low 500's or so. The fact that I have a small area in were to store them helps me I guess, in not spending to much, so I don't overpopulate the shelves.

I am sure that will change once I move to a bigger place soon.....oh boy...

My Collection list on ANN lists 933 anime items. The list counts complete collections as 1 item though so disc wise I probably have about 1200 anime DVDs. I also have 374 manga.

I started collecting in March 06, so I haven't done too bad.

DVD Profiler says that I'm in the 500s. Can't get more specific than that because I'm still adding DVDs to Profiler and many multi-disk sets are being counted as 1 disk.

And no I don't want to think about how much money I have spent on this collection over the years O.O
