View Full Version : Noob Friendly Fighters?

I am going to teach my 2 Adopted Brothers how to play fighting games.

So I wanted to know what people think I should teach them.

I'm not a huge Capcom fan so I'm thinking Melty Blood Act Cadenza Which I just reviwed *shamless plug* (http://ssg2txrr.bravehost.com/revswork/MeltyBloodActCadenza.html) Or Garou Mark of the wolves.

I'm a Guilty Gear fan too but I think that game is too insane for a first timer. Garou is Flashy and old School enough and Melty Blood well.....everything is simpler to do in Melty Blood.

Any other suggestions?

Um... The Marvel Vs. Capcom games are great.

Um... The Marvel Vs. Capcom games are great.

Except for the "I'm not a huge Capcom fan" comment, I would agree that it's a good game. Just not noob friendly.

Something like KoF 98 is good to get the basics down. Maybe even a PC fighter like Eternal Fighter Zero or Immaterial and Missing Power.

I tend to avoid the large combo based fighters for noobs as they tend to promote button mashing in people who don't know how to play properly. Might as well stick them on Smash Brothers. Learning the basics on a standard fighter before moving to the Guilty Gear style fighters is my suggestion.

Something like Melty Blood would be awful for learning to play fighters... definitely. But yeah, really... any KOF is a good choice. Personally, I think Garou would be one of the best choices since it's not too slow or too fast and it has really well done mechanics.

I have both MVC games BUT 2 won't boot on Dreamcast #2 because of my Bootdisc method or a faulty drive not sure which (it's a legit copy but DC #2 isn't modded like #1 was.) 2 has 2 button insta supers and they do like the marvel games but since it won't boot......

I also think 2d Fighters don't get any better than 3rd strike but I think it's too deep for a beginner and the Alpha games are just as technical. SNK games never get ASS deep they usually have a layer of Simplicity to them.

They Do Smash Brothers and I got them Hooked ON DON.

I've only had Melty Blood Act Cadenza for 24 hours........and well if you read that review I wrote you'll know I'm in love.

You didn't really specify, so I am going to suggest Soul Calibur 2 or Soul Calibur 3. It's simple to do impressive looking moves while mashing, but there's enough depth for beginners to try new things, little by little. It's also easy on the eyes as well. Unless you are not a fan of 3d fighters, I think that's worth a look.

The DoA and Tekken series cater to all skill levels. Soul Calibur might require more precise button input, but newbs should find it easy to pick up.

They already have created fighters in SCIII I need to get the first game on Dreamcast that's the best even though it doesn't have the weapons mode that Edge, Calibur II and III have.

Anybody can pick up and play a 3d fighter but 2d fighters take skill and it's 2d I want to get them playing.

Melty Blood Act Cadenza Which I just reviwed *shamless plug* (http://ssg2txrr.bravehost.com/revswork/MeltyBloodActCadenza.html)
-off topic-
Your review kinda leaves a lot to be desired. You really need to point out which version you're reviewing, the PS2 version or the PC version. The PC version is a major upgrade from the PS2 version, so your "lack of modes" comment is waaaaaay off mark if you're talking about the PC version. And post your own screenshots from the actual game. I'd be more than happy to offer some of my own.

You need to book up on the Tsukihime/Kagetsu Tohya/Melty Blood universe. Plus, if you did your research, you'd figure out White Len is the announcer. You probably shouldn't talk about the characters (among other things) if you don't really know what you are talking about.

Here's what I'd suggest. One, get rid of the characters section; You clearly don't know what you're talking about and it makes you look really amateurish. Two, kill all references to the anime; trust me. Three, drop the trivia section; all of it is either irrelevant or flat out wrong.

The characters section is just pointless. If it's a review of the game, acknowledge that the characters all play pretty differently and are pretty unique, but talking about character backgrounds? Utterly irrelevant. Gotta spend more words on explaining the mechanics of the game and why they work.

I should start writing reviews again.

How about a DoA4? It's pretty good on X360.

Oh wait... you said "Noob Friendly". My bad. :sweat200:

I see you haven't played MK:Deadly Alliance/Deception/Armageddon. And what about the VF series. Try button mashing on any of these series and not only will you look stupid doing it, it won't get you anywhere.

Depends on the level of the person you're facing in VF

Mortal Kombat? PFFT it's about as deep as a puddle

Mortal Kombat? PFFT it's about as deep as a puddle

you sure you've played them? The 3-D ones past Deadly Alliance are deep enough that no newb could just pick up and play. Try it, you'll love getting you're ass kicked because you incorrectly timed the stances or missed a frame to catch a OTG, or forgot to block. Yes, there is a block button. No holding 'back' for safety. Please tell me you've played the game or at least played it long enough not to dismiss it as shallow. Because open-minded fighter fans who appreciate what a particular series involves know that calling said series a POS tend to be the ones who haven't played it on another level. Though that's understandable because MK's mechanics weren't always the easiest to adapt to.

If it wasn't for your hate for Capcom, I would suggest Street Fighter 3 Third Strike. It will teach them the basic controls of most fighters and its slower pace so they can get practice. Once they do well then move onto faster games like Melty BLood. What I found out about beginners is their inability to execute specials and supers. Personally I think Guilty Gear is easier than Melty BLood, about the same speed but the combos and such in MB is more complicated except the supers, basic stuff.

You could always pick up Bushido Blade 1 for the Playstation. No weird button commands to memorize and with one hit kills possible, anyone can have fun. Of course this wouldn't help in learning how to play "normal" fighting games with multiple button presses and such but having fun should be the main factor. I ended up getting both Bushido Blade games for the Playstation and also the unoffical Bushido Blade game for the PS2, Kendo:Master of Bushido which isn't as good as the first two games.

I don't hate Capcom persay 3rd strike is a damn fine game.

Smash brothers is pretty easy to get into. DOA simple, but gets boring. I recommend Soul Caliber it's much easier to do combos then in Tekken. Dragon ball Z gamez.

How to improve it more:

The pic of the DVDs. Pointless. Delete it.

References to the anime. Most fans of the game are not fans of the anime. In fact, a good number of them hate it. Delete all of the references.

Delete references to MUGEN too.

I've only really seen the anime never played the other games before at all. But I know enough that the Anime doesn't fit the Canon of the Games.....which explains why a few characters that die in the anime are floating around in Act Cadenza.

Melty Blood follows the theoretical "Satsuki Route" in Tsukihime.

...and yeah, you have NO IDEA what the hell you are talking about in the extraneous parts of your review.

I think they were toying with the interviewer with that answer. Playing through the original MB story mode w/ the English patch applied, it seems to be strongly implied that the "Arcueid - Good" route is the one being followed. Of course, I could be wrong.
