View Full Version : Female characters in Full Metal Alchemist

As FMA is getting cheap re-releases I'm considering it.
Notice covers to vols. 8 & 10 have cool blondes; Winry (8) & Lt Hawkeye (10) according to the reviews.
How big a part, & how much screen & story presence do those 2 & any other female characters have in FMA?

While the focus is obviously on the main characters (majority of which are male) there are several female characters, some which have a huge impact on the story (though I'm not saying who)

The main antagonist of the series is female if that helps any.
All of the female characters in FMA are actually strong characters. There weren't that many in FMA but boy do they play an important part.

I think the only female characters in FMA with minor roles are Lt. Ross and Granny Pinako, but they still get plenty of screen time.

If its at all helpful, I found this which compares female characters from the FMA manga and anime:
Full Metal Women (http://adalisaz.blogspot.com/2006/05/full-metal-women.html)
Be mindful of spoilers for the anime and manga.

There are at least 10 female characters that appear in many episodes. They are on both sides as well: protagonists and antagonists.
I would say that the majority of them play very important roles in the show, and are excellent characters IMO.
Since some of them aren't introduced until much later in the show, naming them would lead to spoilers. I would personally recommend not checking out any lists because of the spoiler factor.

In Fullmetal Alchemist, almost all of the female characters are secondary characters. Granted, many of them are very important secondary characters (even when they aren't on screen) key to advancing the story, but a secondary character is still a secondary character.
As for the two characters you specifically ask about (Winry and Lt. Hawkeye), both see a substantial amount of screen time. Winry is a childhood friend (and later a "girl next door" type of love interest) of the Elric brothers, showing up in almost all of the flashback scenes and later as Ed's automail mechanic and travelling companion. Also, because of her ties to the Elrics and her family background, she provokes a number of crises of conscience among various characters.
Meanwhile, Lt. Hawkeye is Roy Mustang's aide de camp (basically a fusion of sidekick and secretary). She personally doesn't advance the story much by herself, however she is always with Mustang, and her support is key to his role - without her skills and firepower, Mustang would've been a far less effective mentor/agent provocateur.
Along with the dark haired woman named "Lust", these three characters (out of all the female characters) see the most screen time and are present consistently throughout the series. And needless to say, are important to the overall story.
