I'm not sure that's what it was really called, but years and years ago, before I was even collecting anime, I remember TV ads for an anime video club you could join. They would send you Akira as your introductory tape (I remember clearly that it was Akira, which was the big recent-headline-making anime film at that time) and if you chose to join up you would get a different anime title every month. Or something like that; my memory of this is extremely hazy.
Does anyone else remember seeing these ads on TV?

Oh weren't those the ads that promoted anime as some ultra-violent thing? I remember absolutely despising those ads. Simply because while they may work on the "Blood=Sales" crowd for others they probably just gave anime a bad image. For the record yes I know some anime is violent, but they were trying to make it look like all anime was about explosions, lots of gore, and such.

Yep, it was a Columbia House program They eventually did a DVD one too, probably 4 or 5 years ago if I remember right, which I joined for awhile. You got one new title a month for like $19.99 + tax and had the choice to send it back if you didn't want it.
Mostly OVAs and movies from CPM/US Manga Corps, and mostly crap so I quit after awhile. The two titles I remember getting (mostly because I still have them) are Demon City Shinjuku and Wrath of the Ninja: The Yotoden Movie.
