Is there any character that always seems happy-go-lucky that just for once (and possibly for character development purposes) that you'd like to see in serious or sad mode?

To get the ball rolling, I nominate Tsuruya (Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya) and I'd like to see her become serious or sad in the 2nd season. Just so that she gets some depth to her character other than for her to just become a one-note "the character that is always laughing".

This would apply to a lot of comedy series characters for me. I looooove seeing serious romantic/emotional/dramatic bits crop up in what are otherwise comedy shows, such as School Rumble or Lucky Star or Azumanga or Hayate no Gotoku.

For example, I could totally go for a sad Konata (Lucky Star). We *sort of* got something like that in a recent ep (best damn scene of the show), but I wouldn't call it a serious or sad Konata, just a beautifully sweet scene in general.

So yeah, sad Konata please. Also, more sad Kagami.

When the more monotonous characters get sad or teary-eyed it's very touching.

Personally, I'd like to see Yuki Nagato from Haruhi shed a tear eventually for whatever reason (hopefully something over Kyon) because that would just make her the best character of the series for like, ever.

Not that I particularly want to see characters turn emo or what not, but for once I'd like to see Lemmy from To Heart slow down a bit.

Seconded. She needs to fall for Kyon so we can witness the most fascinating love triangle the anime world would ever see.

Vash

Vash had his sad moments, as a child and well into the ending of the show; not to mention being serious about controlling his power/weapon.

Not to mention the moments where he went nuts because of civilians and people being killed. Those moments were some of my favorites when it came to his character.

I wouldn't approve of Lemmy slowing down. That hyper-energetic is part of her charm, she wouldn't be Lemmy without it.

I'd have to agree. A sad Lemmy would make me sad.

I don't know if there are really any characters that I'd want to see a sad version of. I like happy characters :)

As for serious, even in the most goofball shows, there usually is at least a moment of seriousness or two now and then. Can't think of any character that I'd especially like to see act seriously.

Heh.

I think I've seen so many acidic anime parodies of "cute" characters looking so sad just to enhance their cute appeal or so obviously manipulate the audience, it doesn't affect me anymore. In fact, I roll my eyes more often than not.

I can't really specify, but truly sad situations usually play out best when done believably. A tough character holding all her sadness inside can be 10x more heartbreaking to me than someone more "obviously" sad.

Just that is enough to give me an idea actually. :sd:

Strangely enough all I can think of when I'm thinking of this topic are sad/serious characters that I'd really want to see become cheerful. Not in a vapid or shallow way of course, but to genuinely find happiness. #1 on that list: Ichigo Morino from Onegai Teacher. Still a character that my heart goes out to, partially because she reminds me of myself in some ways.

I think she's Lemmy even if her hyperactivity was notched down just for a second or two. Actually, now that I think of it, I think she did have one serious moment, if only fleeting since her genkiness throughout the show overshadows it. At least she maintains being her happy self, which is nice, but a change of pace (whether in serious thought/concentration or sadness) shouldn't hurt her character.

We are talking about the REAL Lemmy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lemmy) right?

I was going to say speed metal wouldn't exist with a slowed-down Lemmy!

I'd like to see a moment where Tomoyo from CCS was sad and I mean really sad. Sure, she's had moments where she's been serious or worried but we've never seen her break down about anything. The closest we've gotten was in that episode where she lost her voice and she wrote down that when Sakura was sad, she was sad too, but even as she wrote that, she was still smiling, so it doesn't really count to me.

As much as I love Tomoyo, her always genki "as long the person I love most is happy, I'm happy" attitude always felt unbelievable to me and I always wondered if she didn't secretly harbor a deep hatred for Syaoran inside her and was actually depressed deep down that the person she loves didn't return her feelings, especially given how over-protective her mother was of the person she loved most. I'd just like to see one moment where Tomoyo was truly upset and frustrated and heart-broken instead of that happy-go-lucky supportive side we always see.

To turn your topic on its head, I'd like to see Rei Ayanami laugh.

If Angelic Days ever gets animated, then you might get your wish. :)
Rei's pretty much the exact opposite of how she was in the original show. In fact, most of the characters do a 180 in that manga. Even Asuka isn't a total bitch. :)
