By way of ANN:

The free anime newspaper Anican in Japan has announced in a special October 20 issue that Buichi Terasawa's classic science-fiction pulp manga Cobra has a new animation series green-lit for production. The series will mark the 30th anniversary of the manga, which tells the testosterone-driven adventures of a space pirate and his female android partner. Osamu Dezaki (Golgo 13, Black Jack) had previously directed a 1982 movie (released by Urban Vision in English) and television series.

For fans of old school series like Cobra, rejoice!

I should finish watching the original series. ;)

I'd be happy to have the original movie released alone for R1, and equally Goku:Midnight Eye, which is even more twisted.

This is really exciting news!
The original is one of my all-time favorites!
Can't wait to see the new series.

Amazing news, although I'm genuinely surprised it took this long for a follow-up Cobra anime to be made; it would have been perfect OVA fodder for the late 80s/early 90s. Hopefully ImaginAsian will be able to bring over the original series at some point too (since unlike Rose of Versailles, there was no public indication TMS wouldn't make it available).

Although having said that, I'm genuinely surprised that no one's at least released the movie by now, considering it was dubbed into English twice! It's sadly little wonder there isn't more Western buzz for the new series since the old one isn't represented at all on R1.

Urban Vision released the movie on subbed (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/6304937075/animeondvd) and dubbed VHS (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/6304936893/animeondvd), but the television series does not seem to have ever been released in English.

So I wonder how many people are going to get this confused (as I did when I saw the topic title) with the American animated series GI Joe.....

Or the 'epic' Stallone film "Cobra", sadly that's what I thought of when I saw this topic. :sd:

The submachine gun (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JaTiMatic) was pretty neat. :P
