Yeah, it's really been a LONG time since I've frequently posted about animation threads. The forum has changed alot and I didn't exactly know where to post this.
But it's rather a quick and simple question: Do I need to watch Gunbuster 1 before Gunbuster 2?

Not really but you should anyway since a lot more things will make sense and the last scene will have a bigger emotional impact on you.

No, but you have to in order to catch the most powerful revelations, and, to a lesser extent, all the little in-jokes.

i was also thinking about picking up Gunbuster & Gunbuster 2 at some point, but they always seemed quite pricier than normal. this caused me to shy away a bit until i understood why and whether it was worth it all.
maybe the cost is in the packaging and extra booklet? one can only assume and hope that they'll eventually go into the TRSI bargain bin?
and is there only 3 DVDs for Gunbuster 2? looks like Gunbuster only has one set with 180mins.

You could go for the movies package (see R1 review), still expensive, but cheaper than getting the OVAs for each.

are you referring to "Gunbuster Vs. Diebuster Aim for the Top! The Gattai Movie"? if so, then it includes Gunbuster and Gunbuster 2, as well as the booklets? when's the release date? the 11/13/07 release date on AoD just can't be right.
