I wasnt able to buy one up back when it was released and was wondering where I can find one of these... without going to JP myself.

Yesasia would probably 1 of the best options given that they offer a free shipping to the US. I got my JP PS3 60G from them last week.

just curious, but what is the reasoning behind needing a JPS3?

R2 DVDs mainly... and I may be picking up some JP PS2 games.
edit: also doesnt hurt to have a 2nd BR player and PS3 console for games (when some PS3 games I like come out in 2008) in the house.

wouldn't a Japanese PS2 be easier then?

You have several options. You can purchase one from www.play-asia.com (they are currently running $549.00 plus shipping), which is a nice site to order from since they offer a six month warranty on their hardware. You could also look for one on eBay or Yahoo! Japan auctions (with the latter, you may have to use a deputy service if the seller won't ship internationally). I'd personally recommend Play-Asia, as I've dealt with them before (got my Japanese PS2 from them a while back), and have been very pleased with their service.
Of course, if you're only looking for a way to play R2 DVDs, there are several players readily avilable in the US which are very cheap that are codefree. A Japanese PS2 would also be more practical, cost-wise, for playing Japanese PS2 and PS1 games, since the PS3 games are not region coded (yet, anyway; and a US PS3 will still play Japanese Blu-Ray discs; we're both Region A). Honestly, if you have a US PS3 already, I'd probably just go with a Japanese PS2 console; it'd certainly be a lot cheaper! ^_^

JP PS2 has no DVD Upconvert functions and no HDMI connections.
