Hello everyone. Recently I dusted off my old Slayers boxsets. After re-watching the 1st DVD, I found I'm even enjoying it a lot more than the first time I watched it God knows how many years ago.

BUT.... as soon as I popped in the second disc, it just doesn't read it. It's not my DVD player either, since the PC just won't read it either. The disc itself is in perfect condition (no scratches), so... it just stopped working. So... is the Slayers re-release worth it? What's new in those sets? Or should I just try to find a replacement for my second disc?

As for a similar problem, I popped in Crusher Joe, but I had never watched it. I just bought it a long time ago in of Rightstuf's sales, and it was in my backlog. But one of the discs is also damaged and just won't start. The worst part is that it's OOP. Is there anything I can do to get a replacement or is there anywhere that has a new copy?

I had a similar problem with my CPM release of season one. It would play in my DVD player but not on my computer. I don't think there's anything new in the re-release (except for chapter stops), but it plays just fine on my DVD player and PC. It also takes up a lot less shelf space than the old set. So...I dunno. If you can get it cheap I guess it's probably worth it.

You probably won't be able to find any replacement discs for CPM titles that have gone out of print, given that CPM's anime business is non-existent these days. But best of luck with that, if you try it! ;)

There was a thread a few months ago about what had been upgraded for the Funimation Slayers sets. It wasn't a whole lot, just a very slightly better video encode, a non-broken Japanese audio track (compared to the tan CPM box, not the ocher one), and chapter stops. And if you're a sub fan (and who among us isn't?), there are next-episode previews and a coda after episode 26. At least, I think I remember that these things were included. I still haven't watched past disc 1.

Pretty much, the consensus was that if you're a sub fan, need to replace your sets due to a problem like this or never owned it to begin with, the FUNi sets are great. If you're a dub fan, you might be a bit happier with the old sets. I belong in the first category (sub fan, never got Slayers Next) so I'm happy with this release.

After searching on the net, I found that the new boxset can be bought for about $30, so I can just replace it, and give the old set to any friend who doesn't mind having an incomplete set. But if the other two sets are fine, I'll keep those and not buy the re-releases.

Thanks everyone.
