Our university anime club is gearing up for a Christmas-themed meeting in two weeks. One of the first things we want to do is come up with as comprehensive list as possible, of Christmas-themed episodes for us to pick this year's lineup from.

Last year we screened Mahoromatic, Strawberry Marshmallow, and Itsudatte My Santa.

Other series we have identified include: Ai Yori Aoshi, Azumanga Daioh, Big O, Chrono Crusade, Irresponsible Captain Tylor, Love Hina, Maison Ikkoku, Nadesico, Ranma 1/2, ROD the TV, Sailor Moon, Tenchi Muyo, Tokyo Godfathers, and Urusei Yatsura.

We're just a little bit concerned about the age of some of these series though, and are trying to especially get a handle on newer series that have Christmas episodes that club officers may not be aware of. (Surely, in all those episodes Inu Yasha or Naruto some other recent long series must have one?) Any suggestions are welcome though!

What additions to our list can you suggest, o wise sages of AoD? :notworthy:

Thx in advance!

Episode 20 of Sister Princess is a Christmas episode, and one of the better episodes in the series IMO.

Daa! Daa! Daa! has one, though I can't remember the episode number :/ I do know that they find out that Kanata's birthday is on Christmas, and that he never celebrated Christmas until Miyu came along (what with being a buddhist and all  ). Maybe that helps... somehow.

Pokemon has a Christmas episode, too, and a very silly one at that. I'm not sure if it's on DVD, but I know it was dubbed in English because I saw it at some point. If somebody knows...

I'm in the same club, but we're not all college students. Sometimes we get some local high schoolers attending. Regardless, Popotan wouldn't be too bad...

Right now, my vote's for Tokyo Godfathers and R.O.D. the TV.

Kimagure Orange Road has a Christmas episode (only marred by some cat abuse).
Lovely heartwarming episode with all the character & plot elements that make KOR so good as a series.

Same volume also has an episode in the snow with plenty of Madoka action. Also one of the best KOR episodes.

If only I could remember the volume # :offline:

Pokemon Episode 65: Holiday Hi-Jynx (http://www.serebii.net/anime/epiguide/indigo/065.shtml) , the one with Santa Claus and Jynx. Yeah, that was a pretty silly episode.

As far as availability, the episode was on Vol. #21 of Pokemon - The Po-Ke Corral (http://www.animeondvd.com/reviews2/disc_reviews/1793.php) - which was released back on September 19, 2000. The DVD is now OOP, however it will be on the third box set of Pokemon Season 1. The third set doesn't street until February 12, 2008, though.

Grumble Grumble Grumble

Now the series 'Kamichu' has an episode where they try to compete against the commercialization of the Christmas holidays...

And if you don't mind something that doesn't quite fit the holiday spirit, the Sci-Fi horror OVA series 'Karas: The Prophecy/The Revelation' occurs during the Christmas shopping season...

Thanks for the replies everyone! Keep them coming! :neko:

(I gotta say though, in spite of all the anime that's coming out on a yearly basis, I'm pretty surprised that many of the series being mentioned are from the 90's or older. Statistically, I'd imagine there to be plenty of Christmasy stuff made in the last 3-5 years. Has the concept lost some of its novelty since the 90's, or is that just what people are most familiar with?)

I'm in the same club, but we're not all college students. Sometimes we get some local high schoolers attending. Regardless, Popotan wouldn't be too bad...

I don't know how familiar you are with Popotan... I own it, and being an Akio Watanabe fan I like it a lot, but there's questionably-aged nudity nearly every episode on the DVDs, and I for one would be reluctant to ever screen it for a group.

I own the whole thing too, bro, and while it starts like a nudie show, it has a surprisingly good second half. Regarding the Christmas episode (eight I believe), I don't recall having Loli Slut showing off her washboard. But hey you own it, so why not check for yourself?

Even so, I think there's better out there than that episode... and I know we won't show it, but god I love the Christmas Eve arc of Nanoha A's.

If I'm not mistaken it was one of the licensing announcements during FUNimation's Kickoff Week way back in January. It was announced (http://www.animeondvd.com/licenselist/2007updates.php) the same day the license for Shuffle! was announced.

Hmm, let's see...

Chocotto Sister is an interesting example in that the first episode is a Christmas episode. It also has one of the most... er, interesting portrayals of Santa ever. Also, if I'm not mistaken, Hayate the Combat Butler also has a first-episode Christmas episode. Lovely Complex has its second episode as a Christmas episode. Nodame Cantabile does a Christmas episode as the third episode, while Potemayo (for which each episode consists of two 12-minute segments) has a Christmas segment as the first half of episode 3. Those might be nice because they're beginnings of the series and thus should be easy enough to pick up.

For completionists' sake, I'll add a couple more that come to mind.

Tokimeki Memorial ~Only Love~, episode 21
Sister Princess ~RePure~, episode 13

Macross TV had either 1 or 2 Christmas episodes. IIRC the "Lolicon Three" were bumbling trying to sell gifts in one, & another had a very touching "Silent Night" being sung, or it could have been the same episode.

IIRC, there's a Sailor Moon special (not licensed) set at Christmas.

Angel Heart episodes 25 & 26. About a brother that hires Ryo Saeba & Xiang as City Hunter to kill his brother & himself together, on Christmas Eve.

Let's see. The only Christmas episode that I could think of that has not been mentioned is in RahXephon Episode 8, the episode is about spending Christmas in a tropical island. Also, the last episode of the original Digi Charat series is a Christmas episode although it is only 3 minutes long. Christmas is also mentioned in the first episode of Saber Marionette J to X, but this is not really a Christmas episode.

Since you mentioned Maison Ikkoku, I recall that it has at least 2 Christmas episodes -- one where Godai is trying to give Kyoko a present, and another where Kyoko knits him a sweater for Christmas.

The latter is followed by a New Year's Eve episode too, I think.

So, double or triple points for MI there. :notworthy:

I have seen all those, except Strawberry Marshmallow,Itsudatte My Santa, Chrono Crusade, Maison Ikkoku, Tokyo Godfathers.

While not exactly Christmas stories, the 1963 version of Astroboy did have 4 episodes that were first broadcast on or around Dec. 25th. the 1st, #52 Snow Lion does have Uran placing the star atop the tree; the 2nd, # 100 Robot House (Engl: 91 Wonderful Christmas Present), might even be a propoer Christmas story, because it ends with a family xmas dinner. The 3rd and 4th were not seen in America, but were on appropriate dates. 148 Robio and Robiet was obviously a tragedy; 192 Medussa's mansion as I recall had little if anything to do with Christmas.

1980 series again used tragedy, although off hand, I do not recall the date of broadcast, it was obviously set just before Christmas. I only recall the English title "Light Ray Robot," but it was the 3rd of 4 versoins of Denkuu's story.

Well, as long as it's been bumped...

I just watched a Christmas episode from You're Under Arrest! TV, earlier today. File 11 - ANN has the title as "The Santa from Hell".

Anyway, it's decent, fairly shounen-powered. The little kid in it is adorable. I honestly didn't expect those children that first showed up in the OVA to become recurring characters.

The kids (Including Maho, who I agree is a cutie) appear as recurring characters up until at least episode 36. I don't recall if they appear in YUA! II & they haven't appeared as yet in Full Throttle. Incidentally, Coastal Studios used real kids for the English dub instead of adult female actors.

Thanks for the correction-How could I have missed that? :sd: BTW, are you getting the singles or the box sets? The first 3 box sets each have a bonus disc that includes interviews & behind-the-scenes at Coastal (Including a clip or two of the dubbing sessions with the kids).

Well, I'm picking up the boxed sets, though I can't say that I was terribly impressed with the clips on the first one (though watching Pamela Weidner work was sort of fun). I'd rather have the actors talk a bit more about the company and themselves on future extras discs, so again, I look forward to that. Dubbing sessions with the kids too? Haha.

Too bad that Jo Ann Luzzatto was replaced as Miyuki, though obviously Juliet Cesario is more than adequate for the task. Plus, she's a hottie!
