Personally I love this show for more then the technical aspects that are superb. The story pulls no punches and makes me pine for more mature series like this. Speed Grapher is definitely one that follows in the mighty Lied's footsteps.

I adore Elfen Lied and it's been one of my top five favorite anime since I first saw it back in 2004. However, one thing I've learned is that it's a severe hit-or-miss anime. People will either understand why it's so much more than a blood-and-boobs anime or they will dismiss it entirely for being too gratuitious and acknowledge it as only blood and boobs.

Lucky for you it's the same one each time. You don't have to feel too guilty. :)

This show is largely responsible for turning me into the sick bastard I am today.

I got the thinpak box set recently and I realy liked it. Very disturbing in some scenes. Especialy with the dog in the flashback episode. It had a lot of thoes moments where I literaly was said out loud "Oh my God!" The animation is beutiful. That opening theme is amazing.

I got this show not long ago, but I'm a little scared of watching it.

Marathon or single episodes?

Marathon or single episodes?

Add another to the marathon group. It's best to find out if you are part of the "I love it" or "I hate it" group as soon as possible.

No need to prolong the agony... unless you are the type of person that would catch a fly, pick off one the fly's wings, let it sit for an hour under a glass, pluck off the other wing, wait another hour and then smash it to the table while cackling madly.

If you are that type of person, one episode at a time will prolong your enjoyment.

Everyone has to lose their fantastical view of the world eventually. The irony of innocence is that no one appreciates it until they've lost it.

And where do I fall in, for me it was more of a "Meh" title, didn't really hated it, but didn't loved it either, ppl were talking about the high level of gore. I've seen Baoh (AnimEigo - OOP) and it has a comparable level of gore and a similar theme. O.O

I know that the dichotomy of the main character personalities does bring in the viewers (cute amnesiac moe girl/Blood thristy Killer bitch) and Moe Loli girl charged to bring her in doesn't help either. I guess I wasn't hooked by that.

Baoh has a pretty different theme from Elfen Lied. Baoh is a parasite that grants regeneration and superhuman power among other things. The diclonius in Elfen Lied don't have regeneration and don't gain superhuman abilities. They just have the control over vectors.

It's sort of like comparing Venom from Spiderman to Doctor Octopus.

I said similar, not the same, a story about a creature, created by science/evolution that escapes its captors and they go after it to capture/destroy it no matter what.

Of course Baoh is more of an action story and Elfen Lied has a deeper story with undertones about evolution and such.

Heh, but we could list over 100 movies/anime/tv/comic series that are exactly like that. That's a basis for many a sci-fi story. :)

Elfen Lied is more of a Frankenstein's monster, constantly chased until the end (their hair is even Franken berry pink ;) ). While Baoh is more of a Werewolf, aggressive and impervious to all but a few things.

yea, i 2nd marathon too, but it took me about 3 days to watch it since i only had time to watch a few hours each night after work.

i really enjoyed it, but the ending really left me baffled. seems like there should be an OVA to continue it (though there IS an OVA that takes place IIRC episode 9-10, or 10-11, or something like that). and the annoying thing is that the thinpak didn't have extras, which really annoyed me. the music and animation was top-notch.

and my fragile mind was never the same again after finishing Elfen Lied...

BTW, what's moe? i keep seeing it referenced.

A volume at a time.
Marathon the whole thing and it really starts to wear thin; a volume at a time is about the right amount for proper lols.

Aw man... Forgive my ignorance, but how do you submit stuff into "current quote"?

Anyway, I've never figured out whether I'm supposed to see Elfen Lied as parody or a clichéd crying fest.

Andrew Cunningham

I've maintained for a while that Elfen Lied is a vicious parody of harem anime, with all the romantic beats replaced with exploding heads and the main characters hopeless inability to progress anything explained by actual mental illness.
The manga covers, which give no hint of the darkness lurking within, and the crack comedic timing of basically everything in the show if you're looking at it in that light...all further evidence.
This theory does seem to rely on you not being able to take that sort of dating sim anime seriously, however. People who actually enjoy those shows invariably think I'm completely insane.

"moe", derived from "Moeru", which is "burning" or "to burn"

As in your passion for the character is burning.

Andrew Cunningham

Not actually true.
燃える is moeru; burn.
萌える is moeru; to sprout, come into bud.
It's the second kanji used for the term moe.

Ah yes.

But the burning meaning is frequently punned upon, which is what I was basing it on. Forgot about the other meaning.

Though at this point the etymology of the word is academic at best.

Speaking of which, I wonder if I can partially blame you and others for the fact I ended up watching the show despite the fact the "gore" aspect made me very hesitant. Then again if I remember right after awhile the gore didn't bother me as much. Not sure if that's a good or a bad thing.

My feelings on the series are I don't really hate it as it had its moments. However I don't really care for it either. Still I guess in a sense I could consider watching partial err training.

Remembering the UK BBC3 "Japanorama" programme, "Moe" as defined by Japanese otakus interviewed, is a pop-culture adjective meaning "comfort from particular" aspects of images or items.

The examples shown were a popular harmony schoolgirl idol group, a latex bare butt (or pair of breasts) headrest cushion, a cosplayer dressed as a manga character (Shadow Lady), as well as anime figures & statues.

There are as many definitions of the word moe ss there are shows pandering to that audience.
I recently saw it defined as liking something for its flaws...
An interesting definition, but pretty far off the usual use of the word.
