I'm wondering whether or not this is an unsubstantiated rumor or the truth.

The original source appears to be Moon Phase (http://d.hatena.ne.jp/moonphase/20060607#p1), which is an extremely trustworthy source in general. However, much of what is reported there is rumour that normally turns out to be fact - I don't know where the staff list mentioned there was reported, for instance, and it seems a little specific to be merely rumour.

GONZO did six TV series this year, and only two are announced for next year thus far (January's Rosario and Vampire and the Tower of Druaga anime premiering at some point). It could be that Suspiria turns up later (if it's even got that far in production yet!).

Well, I hope whoever makes this understands the essence of Dario Argento. I'd be some what annoyed if this just turned out to be a half-baked anime with it's only relation to the source material being the title.

They're also doing Special A with AIC that will premiere in Spring. Also maybe the Mamoru Hosoda project with Gonzo "Peggy Sue" will come to light next year.

Still looking at Gonzo doing 6 titles this year I have to wonder why they had 4 of them in the one season...

Perfect Blue and Tokyo Babylon prove that anime is capable of crafting tense and engaging giallo, which is a good start for remaking Dario's body of work. Not that his giallo and supernatural work are one and the same, but I think there are perfectly capable hands out there.

If anything I think Rintaro'd be the man for the job, but as he's a Madhouse staple I have no idea if him doing a show for Gonzo would ever actually happen.

Whoa, what?

I am completely ignorant of this. Someone mind filling me in?

Actually I was wrong about next year, it's a 2009 project. Anyway from page 5 of the TokiKake thread on "that" forum

He's doing Peggy Sue, the adaptation of a French children's fantasy book, with Gonzo. The project briefly went to Mahiro Maeda yet in the end came back to Hosoda. You can read more about it and look at a few design sketches at Manuloz's forum:
