This is my first post, and I hope this is the right area for this. I'm a long-time reader of animeondvd.com's reviews, forums, etc.. and it is an excellent site. :notworthy:
Anyway, I watched "Royal Space Force: WOH" on Blu-ray last night and it was a very good movie. The overall picture quality was excellent. I was like some others that thought "older" anime wouldn't look that different on Blu-ray, and I couldn't have been more wrong. However, I experienced quite a bit of scene "flickering". I don't know if that's a good word for it or not, but often the scenes would brighten and immediately dim back to where they were. This was pretty subtle in most cases, but very noticable in others. Also a person's face would brighten a bit in a scene. When I would see this happen, I would go back and pause, then frame by frame go thru the scene and I could see it occur slowly.
I was going thru the AoD Blu-ray Review: Wings of Honneamise thread (http://www.animeondvd.com/forum/showtopic.php?tid/23010/tp/1/) in this forum and user inu-liger posted a link to the High-Def Digest review of the movie. In the High-Def Digest Review (http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/986/wingsofhonneamise.html) of this blu-ray they mentioned something that I guess could relate to what I'm seeing:
Making the situation more irritating are darker scenes that feature heavier noise, grain fields that spike at random, light artifacting that's visible in many shots, and an overall contrast that frequently wavers.
Below are some of the times that I saw these different things occur:
If you look these scenes up, you might actually start just a bit before the below times to guarantee that you see the frames I'm talking about.(assuming you see them at all)
00:16:33 - Manna's face lightens and right after that when Shirotsugh comes into view, he fluctuates in brightness.
00:23:05 - 00:23:17 - Bottom right corner of the screen is flickering for approx. 3 or 4 seconds.
00:31:33 - 00:31:41 - Part of a boat Hull? flickering at bottom of screen thru this time period.
00:42:33 - Entire screen darkens and lightens.
1:45:41 - Again, entire screen flickering for a few seconds.
If any of you have this movie and could look at those times(above), please let me know if you're seeing what I'm seeing. Just want to make sure I'm not going crazy.:crazy:
BTW, I'm viewing this on a Sony KDS-50A3000(LCOS/SXRD) via PS3 at 1080/24p.(motion enhancer=off)
