Can anyone think of any specific parts of any specific series that kept them on the proverbial "EDGE OF THEIR SEATS" in suspense?

Higurashi 17. The manicure from hell.
There are a few scenes from Death Note so far that do it. Especially the episode where Light is entrapping Ray Penbar's fiance to get her out of the way. That whole episode was gut wrenching.

Yeah, I remember that. Ouch!
Eureka 7 episode 26, that reunion scene...
Other than that I can't recall any specific episodes but Last Exile, Evangelion, Escaflowne and Hajime no Ippo had scenes that made me stay up way past my bedtime.

I just finished writing a recommendation up for this series over in the Recs forum, so maybe that's why it's fresh in my mind, but the last couple episodes of Planetes were an 'edge of my seat' kind of thing as I waited anxiously to see how the fates of several characters and one tense situation turned out. Thankfully, it was a very satisfying conclusion. :)

Good call. Just about every fight in Ippo had me following along like it was a real fight, with me hitting the Next Chapter button between episodes to get to the action as soon as possible. Such a good show that almost nobody bought... :sigh:

I love to see love for Planetes! I enjoy that series so much and I found it grew on me more and more. I had seen it and bought the set later because I had such good memories of it.
In DeathNote as the battle of wits ensued and progressed I found each episode more intense than the previous one. Much more than say Monster. Monster ...is longer and has some really hard moments throughout but for compact intense on the edge of my seat ...DeathNote. Yup.

Its ones where characters I care about get into perilous situations.
Evangelion, Rurouni Kenshin, Fushigi Yugi, Sailor Moon, Blue Gender, Planetes, Monster, Z Gundam, ZZ Gundam, Noir & quite a few others have had me marathoning just to get to the end of a situation so I can rest easy.
A couple really nice moments in Planetes, I agree with you. GITS SAC had them to, especially a certain episode in 2nd Gig where Togusa helps the one lady out then she goes missing at the end of it. But the one series to really make me "suspenseful" had to be Baccano. Anyone can die at anytime and anything can happen, great stuff.
