The only reason I purchased Fate/Stay Night was because of the beautiful (visual novel-like) Type-Moon animations. After watching Fate/Stay Night do I really begin to appreciate Tsukihime much more. Fate/Stay Night's ending felt like a total train wreck. I had heard that Fate/Stay Night would be a little bit like My-HiME, but I now know that FSN doesn't even hold a light to My-HiME. Both animes (Tskukihime and Fate/Stay Night) have kind of similar endings, in that the female leads both go back to their own realms, or either die . But I felt that Saber really died in vain. With Fate/Stay Night, I was in the dark the whole time because it was never explained what really happened in the past with King Arthur . I would like to know how many of you thought which anime was better, and why you thought it was better. And too, are there any other Type-Moon animes out there that are similar to both of these titles?
You can't really fault Fate for assuming the viewer is familiar with the legend of King Arthur (no I'm not spoiler tagging that like you did, this is a full series discussion) considering how widely known it is. I didn't find the ending to Fate all that satisfying either, but as a whole it was more interesting and engaging than Tsukihime was. Despite the lack of Hisui the characters are more interesting in Fate too. I didn't mind watching Tsukihime (I bought it) but the show has this sort of lifeless feel that makes it hard to become interested in what's going on. That's more a failure on the part of the animation adaptation than the original story itself, but between an original story element that's poorly explained and a very well known legend that's poorly explain within each respective anime I'll take the latter.

Couldn't stand Fate because of Shirou. (*bangs head against wall.*) While the Tsukihime anime pales in comparison to the game, I don't think it's a bad adaptation for its length or anything. It has a nice atmosphere to it.

In terms of sheer quality, I thought FSN was a lot better. Tsukihime didn't really hit with me as much; might have something to do with struggling to maintain a dark atmosphere throughout the show.
Also, Kara no Kyoukai is another Type-Moon adaptation in the works; a series of seven movies. No idea when the first one will be released on DVD though.

Thanks for the info, Seishi. Tsukihime felt kind of boring up until I saw Hisui letting Akiha suck blood from her tits. The ending, in comparison to how Fate/Stay Night ended felt a whole lot better than having Saber go back to the past, deny Shirou of having a relationship with her, and just die in vain. . I don't even know what happened to Britain after King Arthur died. They should have explained what happened in Saber's past with Mordred and Bedivere instead of expecting us to know what happened to her country after she died the first time. Did the country get ruled by Mordred the first time she died? I don't understand the importance of Saber appointing Bedivere and why she felt that she had to do it. What exactly was the mistake that she made before (in her first life)? They also never explained Archer. I would have appreciated the final battle a little more if they actually provided a little more history on Gilgamesh than they did. Everything seemed very vague.

Honestly, most of that can be figured out with a little research into Arthurian lore.
And regardless, it was INCREDIBLY unimportant to the story at hand.
I'm a bigger Tsukihime fan then a Fate fan. I just like the story and characters better, but Fate has a lot going for it. Type Moon went all out after Tsukihime and Fate is a strong franchie with spin offs and its own PS2 game. Fate and Tsukihime are different in that Tsukihime is more of a drama(talking about the anime) with bits of action where Fate is an action show with bits of melodrama. Fights are first and make up most of Fate while Tsukihime will talk at you for an hour or so.

Fate/Stay Night had Shirou in it. Therefore Tsukihime is better than Fate/Stay Night.

As far as generic male leads go Shirou really isn't all that bad. Why the tremendous hatred for him in particular?

I think it has to do with the fact that ShirĂ´ is pure failure surrounded by pure awesomeness and love. He doesn't just suck in a vacuum; he sucks compared to everybody around him. Yes, I'm not sure how one sucks in a vacuum.

My thoughts:
Both are gorgeous to look at.
Tsukihime was too short.
FSN needs less Shiro, more Rin.
BOTH needed more hardcore pron action.
Seriously. I never saw two anime that cried out more to be adapted as hentai. Oh wait. They WERE originally hentai. That's why there was all that sexual innuendo that went nowhere.
On another note: Oh God!!! That Rin/Saber scene was SO INCREDIBLY HOT!!!

While I haven't seen the anime, he's a supreme moron in the game - probably the worst I've come across so far. Fortunately, anime viewers have been spared the pain of reading through Shirou's thoughts.
In any case, the author over-exaggerated Shirou to help present his (overblown and pretentious) philosophical messages.

Here, the problem is not the message, but the messenger, Shirou just tries too hard to be a hero withouth having either the aptitude or the abilitiy(at least at the beginning as he boost his wimpy abilities with the help of Rin and Saber) or some modicrum of common sense, at least he got somewhat less annoying in the latter half.
And about Saber I guess after seeing the cost of having the Grail fulfill her wish, she just decided to embrace her fate, knowing that at least she gave it the best shot she could.

Honestly, I liked both. They were both beautifully animated and interesting to watch. Tsukihime kept me hooked with its mystery moreso than Fate did with its action. I just put my Tsukihime DVD set up for auction on ebay to make some shelf space. It's a great show, but after seeing it a few times, I'm ready to part with. I'm holding on to my Fate for a marathon before I really judge it too harshly.
And I'm on the "Shiro's not THAT Bad" Bandwagon... There's been MUCH worse...
