What discs are you trying? Is it still in warranty? If so, contact Sony.

Then its your fault you screwed yourself. It SAYS DO NOT turn off.
Anyway, Sony can help you. Call them.

I've read on some different boards (http://www.gamespot.com/pages/forums/show_msgs.php?topic_id=26085458) that a few people have had problems. My brother and I both have a PS3 and play CoD4 almost everyday and no problems.
Sheldon - You should do as others have said, either replace it at the store which you purchased your PS3 or call Sony.

If the drive failed in the middle of the level loading, then all you can do is turn it off.
Sounds like what happened to mine. I could put in a disc, the system would recognize that something was inserted, but would never load it. You'd just see the little "squiggly" in the upper right-hand corner of the screen.
Sad thing is, I had barely used the drive. At least my eject mechanism worked, unlike others.

When that happens turn it off by holding down the I/O button until it turns off, NOT the switch at the back. It'll attempt to shut down gracefully. The button at the back should only be used when the PS3 is shut down, or when nothing else works.
If you can still get the XMB up, try to make a backup of your save games onto a USB memory stick and then do a factory reset/reformat. If you can't get it to load discs properly again you'll at least have a backup of the saves you can use when you get a replacement console.

It is really not related to Call of Duty specifically. Despite what people think, the defective rate of the PS3 is not 0%. There seem to be a growing number of Blu-Ray drive failures in PS3's with an unknown cause. But at least the numbers are no where near the failure rate of the 360. We will have to see as more systems age though; most people are reporting this with 60 GB systems for now. A lot of the people that jump in on those threads and say "it happened to me too" are probably full of crap though :).

LOL! Look at it this way: You're not hearing from 20GB owners because all 5 of them are working fine. ;)
