View Full Version : Ever had an anime 'overload?'

I was wondering if there was any moment in your life where you've watched (or bought) way too much anime... right up to the point when you finally decide to give it up for a couple of months?
Somehow I am in a situation where I buy a lot more than I can get of anime and manga. Like an addiction, it seems that I've seen way too much anime this year, and I probably need to give it a rest. Not really to give up the hobby entirely, but maybe to go back to the things I used to do before becoming a fan.
Just wondering if anything like this has come up with any of you guys.
I really had to cut down on what I was buying weekly anime wise. I'd look for a sale and even if I was only mildly interested in it I'd search for hours for the best deal only to tell myself "nope, don't want it" after all of that. Now I pretty much buy what I want or wait for a sale.

I had a pretty big one a few weeks ago after finishing off what was out of Aria, and completing Genshiken 2, Baccano!, and Minami-ke. With the lackluster new season and the series I decided to watch after all those being absolutely meh in comparison, it took about two weeks for me to go actively seeking anime again.
Finishing Inukami! last night though, and the pick-up of Shana II with the start of Aria S3 has helped to pick me up out of that slump.

I'm in that mode right now. Though it's more like I have too much to watch right now, so I'm slowing down and putting a few on hold. There are six shows I'm watching this season and I'm trying to fill in other shows when I can. It's a painful process for me because I'm forcing myself to prioritize shows that I don't really want to watch right now. Most of them are shorter series anyway. I'm just lazy and slow.
But I'm not giving anime up.

I can count up all the box sets in my "backlog" and wonder if blocking out time to watch it a little bit at a time is getting me down... but then again, most of that "backlog" was piled up buying from a variety of back-catalog sales, and I think I've run through a very large amount of what I wanted to get from them, so I suppose I can see my way through. (Still, I've still got a big pre-order or two left to ship...)

Ah so this seems to be a version of the classic anime burnout thread that I've seen in the past. Honestly stuff like that really doesn't happen to me. It's mainly because I just let things flow naturally. Meaning on some days I'll end up watching more and some days I'll end up watching less. Just the ways things are for me.

Yeah, I've had it. But it usually lasts just a week or two, and then I'll feel like watching something from my now unconquerable backlog, or something new that has just come in, and I'm back to watching it.

Several time I stopped watching and got a really large back log. Now I have been watching anime on my way to and from work using my Portable DVD play I ration out what I watch to about 30-45 minutes in the morning and evening each way. At home I watch only non anime show and movies on cable except for Saturday night when I watch Cartoon Network.

Hasn't happened to me yet, but I've only been addicted for 13 years ... ;)

Not really. There's so much to watch even just keeping up with what's coming out in Japan that while I can get "overloaded", it doesn't make me want to stop watching so much as quit my job and find time to watch more =P

Not really. There have been times where I would watch a bit less and focus a bit more on video games, but I've never just stopped watching for longer than a few days. Unless I was on vacation with the family, in which case there were a few periods of 1-2 weeks with no anime (and a bunch of catching up when I got back).

Early 2007 comes to mind, when I was catching up on unwatched fansubs. I'm tellin' ya, sitting through nine straight episodes of Negima!? was an ordeal.
Of course, since I no longer watch fansubs I don't have nearly as big a problem with getting burned out or backlog. Kinda nice. ;)

I was buying a lot over last summer and I've had to slow down over the fall and winter, except for the occasional DVD. I have finally been making some headway into my backlog.
I just bought 3 DVDs last week and that was the most in a long time.

I've never been an "all anime, all the time" kind of guy. I vary it with regular books, movies, television, video games, whatever, so I haven't reached a point where I feel like anime's all I do.
Luckily (from a purely financial point) the shows I'm interested in are wrapping up right now and I've got a good size backlog that is in desperate need of catching up on. Looking back a couple years I've gone from getting 15-20 anime discs a month to this year where there are some months where I'm only getting 4-5 at the most.

I'm permanently half-hibernating with anime watching now. Have a "feed" off a favourite chestnut, or try a new show, but the amount I have squirelled away seems as large as ever.
Perhaps the state of the UK & US industry is depressing me & having an effect. Perhaps I over-stuffed last year & am still digesting..... :noodle:

Not anymore. I just keep buying and buying, and the backlog grows bigger and bigger.
A couple times I tried laying low on the monthly purchases to catch up on the backlog, only to end up, after a few months had passed, frantically scrambling to pick up everything that I'd missed in the interim.
Especially when it comes to R2 stuff, you often can't pass it up and come back later. At least, not without paying considerably more for the privilege.

I've hit the point of buying too much many times, while I may have breifly slowed down on purchases I've never considered stopping. Also that slow down only lasts until something else catches my eye. I figure so long as my budget can handle it there's no problem.

Nope. I have one too many hobbies. Juggling several different hobbies keeps me from burnout. Ofcourse it also means it takes me forever to attend to or "finish" something (like - an anime series, a Gunpla kit, a RPG videogame, a bishoujo game, a novel, a Hollywood movie). In other words, a backlog on everything.
About the only thing I don't have a backlog on is manga and pron. :P

Last winter was a turning point for me. I'd amassed a collection of a couple hundred discs in about a three year span and had a pretty considerable backlog built up. I decided to not buy anything substantial until I cleaned out the backlog a bit. Throughout the year I whittled away the discs I already owned and succeeded in purchasing only a handful more. That was, however, until the current ADV clearance sale was announced... *sigh*

I'm a little more than burned out. I think I'm officially becoming jaded. It's hard to put into words what I like and don't like anymore, so I won't do it here. Needless to say if I see another anime that's tagged as "moƩ" I'm going to puke.

Not really. I never have too much anime on my plate at one time. I have far too many other interests to invest too much into anime.

I don't get tired of anime just series that I am watching ex)watched fmp 4 times and some of my others a lot. So I want to buy MORE! and I really like to see what happens when I am hooked on an anime I really enjoy so I must buy!
I remember feeling that way toward the end of 2006, and then Geneon went and brought out a bunch of great sho.
(Sight gag for incomplete shows. Hee hee!)
But right now I'm neither overloaded nor burnt out. And the backlog is moving in the right direction for once!

Nope, not yet. Admittedly, my backlog is growing a tad since I have a new 1080p HDTV and watching all the hi-def programming via Dish Network (along with Blu-Ray and HD-DVD movies) makes it a tad difficult to find time for my anime. But I still somehow manage to squeeze in a couple of discs each week. I guess that keeps overload from setting in.

While I haven't got to the point where burnout sets in, there are times when I feel I've watched way too much stuff and should take a break from anime even if I'm not bored with it. For variety's sake and all that.
There are days when I could probably marathon whole shows,(the 13 ep ones, at least) but I don't want to overdo it.

Too much? Not really. I tend to buy a lot, but I get it in relatively small chunks. 6 discs this week, 10 next, ect. As such I'm rarely overloaded.
We'll have to see about this coming week though. Assuming the mail makes it through I should have well over 100 discs coming on in, most will probably be here on Monday. We'll see how long it takes for me to get through that.
Maybe I'll get lucky and if it snows enough, even we'll be shut down.

My hobbies usually go in cycles - meaning, I'll buy cels for a month or two, get "tired" of it, and move to dollfie accessories, Jpop, and so on. I try not to focus on one thing for too long, or I'll feel overwhelmed.
I rarely buy anime anymore, but that's because I've mostly bought what I already want, or what I want has never been licensed. And I've watched a LOT of anime in my coming up to 11 years in the hobby, so I know what to avoid, I know all the cliches, etc. I can watch 3 or 4 unlicensed series at a time, but not all at once.

I haven't really bought too much anime or anime-related stuff lately. Yeah, I'm still buying, but it feels more like the R1 companies are putting out less of the kind of stuff I'm interested in.
It's probably a good thing. I've recently picked up a new hobby (guitar) and that has been eating time and money.

I sort of had one during the summer, but not because of me watching too much anime.
During June, I suddenly had this huge urge to finish Final Fantasy X, so I dedicated virtually all of my free time towards finishing it. When I finally beat the main story mode, I was pumped and ready to go binge on anime.
The next day, I was able to watch a couple of episodes. I had finally gotten around to finishing the last episode of Baldr Force EXE Resolution, when my computer's power supply died.
You should've seen the look on my face.
Needless to say, I ended up having no computer access in my room for two weeks. I still got some watching done though. I got to see RahXephon On-Demand for free (thank you G4TechTV Canada and Rogers!), and I FINALLY got around to finishing some of the titles that I bought months ago, like Cromartie High School.
But when I finally got it back, my drive to watch 15-20 episodes a day was simply not there. I would generally watch about 2-3 episodes a day max, and there were even days when I just didn't feel like watching anything at all. My plans to free up some massive space on my hard drive that summer went up in smoke, just because I didn't feel like it. =\
It wasn't like I was going to give it all up, though. It's just that when I don't have the luxury to watch a good amount of episodes, I always complain to myself about it, and plan to go on various watching sprees when the chance comes up. But when it does, I simply pass on the opportunity.
