View Full Version : AD2008: Round 1 Voting
dunno001

Due to having exactly 20 players, the need for the fast polls is nil, and the shortened version of the rules will now be enforced. So, to determine drafting order, the results for round 1 will be used, winner of this round getting to pick first for who they want in round 2. Ties will be broken by the order in which the confirmations were sent. With that aside, let's get this started, shall we? (Please note- characters for this poll are listed in drafted order; future voting rounds will be a random order.

Admittingly, I have to say that I like how this is starting off. There's a few characters that I would love to vote for, but only 2 that can be picked... Sakura is an easy one, because those shows melt in me like sugar. The other one I have to give to a character in a show that I actually just got around to watching recently- and Kino gets it. Sorry to Roy and Osaka...

Oops, sorry. For some reason, the font size on the poll entries is font size 6 or something really small, so it's kinda hard for me to see if I've made a typo. (It's small enough that there's no difference between 1 and l.)

Good to see that the member formerly known as PsychoIdiot was able to pick Lelouch this year. ;)

Very tough voting for a second, but between Sosuke, the Sergeant, Motoko and Haruhi (who's going to be 1st anyway), I went with Keroro.

Someone must have been looking at avatars and figured they could score a few votes. I am surprised Fudce didn't pick Nishizawa though. I guess his belief she could get him into the first round wasn't strong enough ;) .

Good things come to those who wait. I have to admit I was very tempted to send her into battle straight away, but everybody knows that leaders wait at the back until they are needed.
Instead, I sent another favorite of mine into The Fight, since she most definily has a Shot, and who knows, she might just have The Power to Create a Big Lock on things given Time, and then The Voice will become Silent.
It wasn't me either, though I'd guess that's 1 name down if you want t go with the same theme of an all male, black hair theme like last draft.

I didn't feel like joining in as a contestant this time, but I will definitely be around voting for my favorite characters. :)
First pick is a no-brainer for me, Sakura Kinomoto. She's always been one of my favorite characters. She's cute and likewise has an adorably sweet personality. There's not many I would vote for before her.
Second choice is tougher, as there are a few other interesting picks in the first round. I went with Osaka for the second choice. She's such a unique character (and a lot of what makes Azumanga Daioh fun), so I thought she stood out.

Team M.A.H.O.U First Round Pick Interview: Roy Mustang
(click on Roy Mustang to view different pictures)
Chimp: Well greatings Roy, I can call you Roy right?
Roy Mustang: (http://img132.imageshack.us/img132/1579/roymustang4iz2.jpg) ...No.
Chimp: Okay well its still great to have you here and Team M.A.H.O.U. is proud to make you our 1st pick. You know you were our first choice right?
Roy Mustang: (http://img132.imageshack.us/img132/1579/roymustang4iz2.jpg) Really? Weren't you guys suppose to be drafting a bunch of perverts, nympos, and social degenerates? So what happen?
Chimp: Well...   Hentai is so old school and we here at Monkey Biz Inc. like to zig when others think were going to zag. Plus the big guy up top got some wild hair up his ass about some new theme.
Roy Mustang: (http://img161.imageshack.us/img161/369/roymustang2jo3.jpg) So thats why the name change, Team M.A.H.O.U. it is? So what does it stand for?
Chimp: Well were still working on that but is sounds really cool doesn't it?
Roy Mustang: (http://img132.imageshack.us/img132/1579/roymustang4iz2.jpg) ...
Chimp: Okay well being our first player I guess that makes you team captain. We have a lot of faith in your ablities, plus we value your input.
Roy Mustang: (http://img505.imageshack.us/img505/3630/roymustang3fx3.jpg) Okay when then we should look into who were going to draft next. I say were go after that hot blond-
Chimp: HOLD UP THERE STUD. We already have a pretty good idea of who we will target for the next round. See here some bios on most of the candiates.
Roy Mustang: (http://img161.imageshack.us/img161/369/roymustang2jo3.jpg) read :depressed: read :anger200: read  This is a joke right? There isn't even one-
Chimp: Yeah I know but really there is a plan. Anyhoo what we were want is your expert opinion on who we should get as a spokemodel and mascot.
Roy Mustang: (http://img505.imageshack.us/img505/3630/roymustang3fx3.jpg) Well if were going with those picks I guess were are going to need some help some were. I thinking of say Faye Valintine or even better yet Riza especially if we can get her to wear-
Chimp: Well those are mighty fine choices but we could run into some problems. You see they are very likely to be drafted in later rounds. So we need someone who if a team drafted would be committing AD suicide.
Roy Mustang: (http://img132.imageshack.us/img132/1579/roymustang4iz2.jpg) And who may this be.
Chimp: We were thinking about this one. slides a pink hello kitty themed folder
Roy Mustang: (http://img132.imageshack.us/img132/1579/roymustang4iz2.jpg)   Are you fuckin joking here! I already have a bad rep with the ladies and this, this, OMFG. We could get locked up for this.
Chimp: Well hopefully not.   Okay but on to your qualifications to be part of Team M.A.H.O.U.
Roy Mustang: (http://img132.imageshack.us/img132/1579/roymustang4iz2.jpg) Huh, you already signed me so who cares?
Chimp: just a formality. You see we forgot to get clear verification and went solely on your rep. So if you would please...
Roy Mustang: (http://img505.imageshack.us/img505/3630/roymustang3fx3.jpg) Fine! Is this what your looking for suddenly Roy tugs at his gloves and flames the entire room including Chimp. (http://img161.imageshack.us/img161/8051/roymustang1sk2.jpg)

Strange to only see Osaka get in as an entry card this year. And Osaka lost her crown to Haruhi Suzumiya by getting drafted thirteenth this time when she is usually gone within the first five or six picks.
Seven rookies drafted as entry cards. Also, an additional six who just debuted last year are in as entry cards, including the new queen of the Anime Drafts, Haruhi Suzumiya.
One of my votes went to Haruhi, who was my first choice that I just missed out on. The second vote is for the character I received as my entry card, Mikuru Asahina.

Very interesting first round picks - my first pick I had to go for Hinagiku - I'm amazed she's gone so early but she's just too awesome not to go - besides the usual picks of Haruhi, Sakura, Osaka will dominate so go for the underdog.
And speaking of which, my second vote was for my character of course...L. Wonder how many would have predicted that? (But with Light also in the first round, the dreaded split vote rears it's ugly head possibilities...) Still, a few unique looking 1st round with other newcomers like Hina so will be interesting to see the round robin...

WOW! A lot of interesting and great characters. If the first round is going to be this intest, I can't wait to see how the rest of the draft plays out!
Anyway, my votes went to Light Yagami and Sosuke Sagara.
And I'm going to guess that Nos voted for Hinagiku Katsura of Hayate the Combat Butler. She was one of the three characters on the poll that I was gunning for in the second round (the others were Sosuke and Mjr. Makoto, the two characters I drafted last year).

Wasn't it a bit dangerous to draft Mikuru in this Round? Haruhi and Mikuru are now going to suffer from Split Series Syndrome, just like L and Light; Lelouch and C.C.

Heh, she was shortlisted (though only barely, since she doesn't get enough screentime), but then again like half the round was:
Konata Izumi (Lucky Star)
Mikuru Asahina (Haruhi)
Sakura Kinomoto (CCS)
Sousuke Sagara (FMP)
Ayumu "Osaka" Kasuga (Azumanga)
Lelouch (Code Geass)
C.C. (Code Geass)
Miu Matsuoka (Ichigo Mashimaro)
Motoko Kusanagi (Ghosr in the Shell)
Hinagiku Katsura (Hayate the Combat Butler)
All of the above also deserve a vote and I was too lazy to cut it down to one :sd:

This could make my birthday either a pleasant day, or a sad one, depending on the outcome.
(OK, not really, but the thought of seeing the results of Round 1 on my birthday amuses me somewhat.)
There were only a couple others who I would have voted for at all.
In my case, I actually knew half of the characters mentioned from watching their respective shows (for this round). That's actually an improvement from the last draft, where I would often narrow my choices down to about 3-5 characters (and it was often three) every round, just because I knew who they were beyond name recognition.

Consider Sakura was number 1 and Haruhi was number 2 last year, we could have a possible repeat, but Haruhi's advantage is at least it's not a 3 way with the Haruhi girls...
...wait, did I just say 3-way with the Haruhi girls in a non-sexual context? Didn't that was possible...*ahem*...anyway...
There are some definite wild cards though. In the best of poll last year Lelouche won but with CC in there as well a split vote is definite there, and we don't know just how well Konata will do as well - she's a real wildcard. For me of course, the problem with Death Note is the split vote for Light/L and Hinagiku is another real wild card - unlicenced yet popular character...it's a real tough call, and with popular veterans like Osaka in there, we could have a Sakura/Haruhi/Osaka top 3 again...just rearrange as you will.
It just makes things more interesting in the second round, when you see characters you expect to do well actually didn't (last year Belldandy was the biggest surprise in this department whilst Kino was near the top - wonder how many saw that coming?)...probably just cursed myself and L's near the bottom now...gah...

OTOH, at least Ginko's a huge upgrade from the character Jack picked #1 last year. :sd:
I thought that Nabeshin was a very popular character so I was really surprised when he did terrible. He even lost out to Schwarzwald, but to be honest I like Schwarzwald more then Nabeshin.
Ginko was maybe one of three that i had in mind for round one. I was going to go for Haruhi Suzumiya just to guarantee a high position. But decided that Ginko was a strong choice based on the fact that Mushishi was one of those series I think a lot of people have seen but one that's fallen off the radar.

Just wondering.... since it's the 1st poll, I would have thought it would be on the front page, especially since there's hasn't been any competing polls but chris might have taken down that option...
Well, from my understanding Chris only puts the link to a poll on the front page if it's newsworthy, like the Weekly Releases poll or any poll in the Polls subsection that he created in relation to current events in the indusrty.
Er, but it's been done before such as last year draft, so I was wondering if Chris changed the rules. And I meant the sidebar of the forums forum listing, not the animeondvd.com webpage. Unless that is what you're talking about...

I think that's why he would be perfect for latter rounds. I think in previous drafts there was actually a fast draft, so there was a chance that you wouldn't get in if you didn't get enough votes. Since votes usually are skewed toward popular characters(haruhi for example and azu dai oh characters)...those are usually picked for the round. At least that was my mental processes, as probably Lelouch is wasted in this round, but I was afraid someone would take them. Of course there's that question of what's left for the 2nd round, and stacking of this round so...

Well if that's the case, then it's dunno's decision if he wants to put the poll on the sidebar or not. The actual format of the polls didn't change as far as I know. You can still place a poll on the sidebar as long as you click on the "Add poll from this post to the portal" option on the initilal post of the thread.

Don't be so pessimistic - last year if I remember, not only did I remember that LeLouch won his round last year, but also won the poll at the end of the rank 1 characters of each round - I consider him a possible outsider to win the round.
Anyway, I've made a list of characters I want to use and which rounds I'd prefer - I think I'll stick to what I did last year - my last two rounds using for personal favourites which I don't mind if they don't do well at all (though Ryo did well last year in R9) whilst the 1st 8 I'll see whose available.
Also, I've mentioned this to TnAdct1, but a personal rule of mine is to note draft anyone that I drafted last year so if anyone wants those this year, I'm not going for them.
And lastly, as I said, my fanfic plans are still available, but I know what when I introduce my drafts, my plans is to have a trio of 'brothers' to introduce them in a sing-song way...though one of the three isn't a male...

I am planning on doing the same thing as my last couple of picks will be characters I want rather than characters I think will do well.
I nearly did it for the first round but thought it would be better drafting a character from a popular series (although I do like Spike).

Originally I was planing on not drafting any characters from my team last year for this year's team. But when I wrote down my list of characters I like to draft, I decided to write down six of the ten characters that I had on my team from last year, and two of them were actually on my list of ten characters that I submitted to dunno during the entry phase. So I might draft a character or two from last year's team if they're available. Two of my original ten (Sosuke and Mjr. Makoto Kusangi) are already gone, and I expect a couple more might go by the end of the third round. So we'll see how that plays out next week. I already know who I'm going to pick in the final two rounds as I'm pretty sure that they will still be available by that time.

Chimp: Yeah about that. You see the early exit polls are indicating we really underestimated the Moe fetish crowd in AOD. I mean we already knew about Haruhism but were counting on some split voting to clamp down on that.
Roy Mustang: (http://img132.imageshack.us/img132/1579/roymustang4iz2.jpg) So.

Ah yes the easier of the two votes to make was Ayumu "Osaka" Kasuga (Azumanga) because it would be a crime not to vote for her. Such a wonderful girl. However the second vote was where the real challenge came in. That and I can already feel the glares from whoever I fail to vote for. However I don't want to completely waste the second vote. Thus my choice will be Miu Matsuoka (Ichigo Mashimaro) due to her "fun" moments in the series. For the record the others I was deciding between included the following.
Konata Izumi (Lucky Star)
Haruhi Suzumiya (Haruhi)
Mikuru Asahina (Haruhi)
Sakura Kinomoto (CCS)
Hinagiku Katsura (Hayate the Combat Butler)
Now granted to be fair, I can't say all five of them had an equal shot at being the secondary vote. However there are things I like about each of them. Be it the otakuness of Konata Izumi, the flair of Haruhi Suzumiya, the nice body of Mikuru Asahina, the cuteness of Sakura Kinomoto, or the coolness of Hinagiku Katsura. In any case at least this means I won't have to click view results or anything like that.

If I counted it correctly, looks like I'm going to be drafting in the 15th position, which is selection #35 in the second round. It might be avantageous to draft this late as I can gauge the field and monitor players' tendencies. But it also means that some of the characters that I plan to take in the second round will be gone by the time I get to pick. But just like in real life, that's the breaks! :sd:

Hey, not bad at all!
Hinagiku pretty much ended up in the middle of the pack, like I hoped she would. Had I not been the last person to get into the draft, she could've potentially done even better.
All in all, I would like to thank those who gave Hina their support! :D
Further observations:
- I find it interesting and amusing at the same time that there was a 5-way tie for 6th and 8th place.
- Interesting tie for first place.
- I was quite surprised with how few votes some of the characters got, like Mikuru, Spike, and Lelouch.
- Nice to see that Ginko (and entering early) pulled through for Jack after all. :)
