I stumbled across this link on another webcomicers blog- this article, about how 1000 True Fans can keep an artist going, is one of the best things I've ever read, and makes me feel a lot better about a gazillion geeky things. I know it certainly applies to comics, where artists can publish books and make a living based on fan support... it's a fairly common thing now for some webcomics artists to ask for a certain amount of donations before they post the next update.
It's also why I think the anime industry'll be just fine, but not a collosal juggernaut in all forms [well, outside SJ titles anyways].
Really, it just makes so much sense- and we've seen it in action for years with Animeigo's PreOrder system as the exact example of this sort of thing. ImaginAsian's line also follows this sort of thing..... even with bigger companies, when you think about it, Anime's been operating on this sort of principle for years. It shows how much your purchasing choices do make a difference, whether it's anime or manga, or other associated fields of geekery- that extra 100 fans does make a difference in the continuation of geek happiness for all.
I hope this is the right forum for posting this.... but again, I wanted to share it. It makes a lot of sense. Seeing stuff like Right Stuf's "500 fans get names on DVD" just shows how grass roots anime really is, and this article made me like fandoms in general just a little bit more- not the nauseating slush pile of "gimme gimme" you see whenever a company or creator [and not just anime companies] complains about leechers, but the core of people who just really like what they like, and are willing to devote a lot of serious time and energy into their hobbies, and into giving back to it.
