Grumble Grumble Grumble

Given the generally accepted definition that 'Anime' is animation produced and targeted for a Japanese audience, here's some interesting news that was announced this week...
Entertainment giant Walt Disney Co. will team up with several Japanese companies to produce animation for television in Japan, a leading market, a Disney official said Thursday.

Disney, Madhouse to Make Stitch! Show for Japanese TV - Anime News Network: (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2008-03-06/disney-madhouse-to-make-stitch-show-for-japanese-tv)

With the current financial crisis developing in the Japanese Anime industry, the funding provided by Disney would no doubt be welcomed. But in the long run, will the introduction of Corporate US funding of Japanese Anime production be a good thing? Or a bad thing?? And how many users on this forum would purchase a Anime series produced for the Japan Disney Channel???

Probably not. I don't like Disney as a company to begin with, and I have a hard time imagining anything they'd do would even be particularly good. The only way I'd really consider it is if it's pretty much a completely separate program merely with the Disney name on it, but no actual creative input.

Like anything else, it would depend on the look of the characters and backgrounds, the fluidity of the animation, and the specifics of the plot (or plot summary, in the case of folks who are almost exclusively interested in titles set for R1 release).

I can't begin to guess how much control Disney will have over the projects they'll fund, but I honestly doubt that this would guarantee a uniform, company look (whatever that is, these days), for all the works involved.

Knowing me, I'll probably be interested in the Stich! TV series that Madhouse is doing...

The involvement of Disney is totally irrelevant to me.
If a show gets an R1 release and I like it then I will buy it. I do not think that I have ever known, or even thought about, the source of the funding for the show.

I do not have enough information (meaning none) to even hazard a guess as to whether or not this will ultimately be good or bad.

You know this has been happening and really isn't that new except maybe having just a high profile company attached to it. US involve in many different ways as brought us second seasons, basic concepts and many others things. Its all about content and despite what some may feel, Disney can and does very good shows. Their animations can and does at times bet out +90% of anything Japan might be doing and the other 10% is more of personal taste. It might be a little different with story but then again that is more of personal taste as well.

This is rather interesting to see this will increase the sales of anime or if it will be a flop and make things worse. Right now, I don't want them to work on a project with KyoAni.

If they were smart, they'd do a Kingdom Hearts TV series. Let Square or whatever studio have free reign over the story, and just help with the animation and throw money at the project. Would be almost as good as getting the Advent Children crew to do a Kingdom Hearts CG movie. Or heck, just do both. :D

Actually, there is money in something like that; good idea.

I don't think I would mind a Madhouse-animated Kim Possible movie.

A Shego series animated by Madhouse would so frickin' kick so much ass, too! :beat: :notworthy: :susel:

I agree that Disney is capable of putting out exceptional animation features, (as the recent releases from their Pixar division shows...), but with Disney, the impact on the development of the Anime series their funding will be far greater. Previous US distributor funding for Anime series was in reality, supplemental funding, with the Anime series still primarily produced to be shown on Japanese TV and Cable networks. Now with Disney, not only do they have greater resources for Anime series funding, they also have the resources to have their own dedicated cable channel in Japan. This by itself will give them a greater degree of control of the series production. In addition, unlike previous attempts to break into the Japanese Anime market, (e.g. Warner/Cartoon Networks attempt with the 'Powerpuff Girls') Disney trademarked characters are already highly popular in the Japanese market, giving them an almost automatic success for many of their planned series...

You know I swear I thought there was talk about Disney being interested in something like this a long while back. Of course that may have been just fan speculation. But yeah this would be a great idea, one of which I'm surprised hasn't happened yet.

When I first saw a W.I.T.C.H. graphic novel I was surprised how mahou shoujo mangaish it was - down to semi-naked transformations, scenes with girls in the bathtub or getting dressed etc. I was then surprised to see Disney's name on it. I've not read much more than the first book nor seen any of the TV series but it would probably make a good anime.
