Remember Elite the space trading game from the mid 80s & early 90s? It was various PCs & Commodore 64 IIRC.

I recently found Frontier:Elite II & Frontier:First Encounter for sale in a shop bargain bin, which I was told are sequels. They are on 3.5 floppy (original Elite was on 5" floppy or cassette/cartridge).

Does anyone know if the 2 Frontier games are playable on Win XP at all. I have a similar, but newer game, Vega Strike which does work.

They won't run directly on Windows XP. You can get them to work by using an emulator. Give this one (http://sourceforge.net/projects/vdmsound/) a try. Many people have said that it works fine. You can also try DOSBox. (http://www.dosbox.com/)

You should also look at this. (http://www.eliteclub.org.uk/jjffe/about.htm)

An updated version (Elite 4) that will run on modern operating systems is supposed to be in the works. Of course, I've heard that for the last several years. It's probably vaporware.

There is a freeware/public "adaptation" of the original Elite:

Works under XP, Mac, Linux.

It's not vapourware (I know a bloke who works at Frontier) but apparently it hasn't made a great deal of progress yet because they've been concentrating on other platforms and are currently working on putting out a Wii game - Lost Winds (http://www.frontier.co.uk/games/lostwinds).

Right On Commander!

Thanks, I've d/l Oolite (18.8Mb). Frontier:First Encounter has arrived, waiting for Elite II (& Vega Strike, a similar type game).

Strange, watching Starship Operators made me nostalgic for Elite (& to a lesser extent Colony Wars) which lead to all the above.
