View Full Version : What are the best joysticks for PC gaming?

I'm looking for a good joystick for aviation simulation & spacecraft flight, as well as motoring games.
I'd like fine gradual directional adjustment, not restricted to one "click" for movement in NSEW direction. There used to be some old style small stick & 3 platform button joysticks years ago, but long gone.
Price is no object if the hardware is good. :)

People don't think when they say "Price is no object". :P There is always someone out there trying to aim for true, pure perfection. :notworthy:

Bah. If it doesn't simulate a fire-control system, it's no good. All the planes worth flying carry missiles. ;)

I'm sure for the right price they could make that mod possible. :D

Be ridiculously expensive to find a high-res display that can cover an entire bubble canopy, though.
But heck, if you're gonna go that far, might was well hire a crew to program you a VF-01 Valkyrie combat simulation program while you're at it.
"360 degrees of freedom" has nothing -- nothing -- on the full-immersion space combat sim. :>
Slightly offtopic but has anyone tried/seen any reviews of this game controller (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Drive-Wireless-Rumble-Force-Gamepad/dp/B000RK1Q74/)? It's for PC but is also compatible with PS2 which is why I'm interested in it.

Nice, but I only want a joystick! :sweatdrop:

Interesting to know because the mini-sticks on those gamepads could give finer control than the hand-size sticks.

I have a Saitek Cyborg EVO

Mine works great. I use it in BF2.

You use a joystick in an FPS? Does not compute...

Does for games like Quake II/III/IV & Unreal. Joysticks (Sidewinder anyway) allows different firing rates, auto-strafing, multiple/angle grenade throws etc.
Having said that I only use my trackball & keyboard hotkeys (why I prefer PC gaming as well as better resolution on my monitor) on FPS games....

Trackball? @_@ I can't imagine playing a FPS with a trackball! But if that works, more power to you! @_@
I've been pretty happy with the Logitech Wingman 3D for space sims. (I still haven't fired up Falcon 4.0, after years...I should probably support Joel and buy Allied Force.) The twist rudder is a stroke of genius, IMO.
I should point out that it probably hasn't been produced for years, but there are similar replacements. It does NOT have the super-heavy-duty build of, say, the old Thrustmasters though.

Being slightly ambidexterous on keyboards etc I use the trackball for direction (very rapid changes are good), & keyboard for movement & weapon selection. Having a programmable trackball allows more firing options through the buttons than your average joystick as well.

I don't know about that, but I had a roomate that swore by his trackball. I really couldn't argue with his skills, somehow he made it work very well.

I use twitch movements too, especially when piston-jumping in ut2k4. Fwiw, I actually used a trackball (original Logitech Trackman) primarily for FPS during the UT99/Q3A days. People always wondered how I was able to pull maneuvers that were thought only possible on a mouse. Now I'm not as quick with the thumb anymore..luckily my wrists are though.

I use Mouse-Trak (by Itac) either home/office model (3 button) or Evolution (6 button) depending on game, ergonomic comfort etc. http://www.mousetrak.com/
Very smooth & are own-hardware driven.

...I use it for piloting the fighter jets and choppahs.
