Anime of Jovovich's Ultraviolet Film Confirmed (Update 2)
posted on 2008-03-27 14:10 EDT

The Animax satellite television network confirmed in a Tokyo International Anime Fair 2008 press conference on Thursday that its Ultraviolet: Code 044 anime is based on Kurt Wimmer's 2006 live-action Ultraviolet film starring Milla Jovovich. The anime was pre-announced in a press release for the event. Famed director Osamu Dezaki (Ashita no Joe, Aim For The Ace!, Lupin III movies) will supervise the animators of Madhouse and Tezuka Productions. Dezaki's longtime collaborator Akio Sugino (Ashita no Joe, Aim For The Ace!, Black Jack The Movie, Golgo 13: The Professional) will design the characters. Romi Paku (Fullmetal Alchemist's Ed, NANA's Nana Osaki) will voice the main character "044." 044 is a female warrior genetically engineered with high combat skills and ordered by the government to annihilate a vampire army. Madhouse founder Masao Maruyama will produce with Sony Pictures Entertainment (Japan). The project will premiere on Animax on July 1 to mark the anime network's 10th anniversary.

No, this anime is based on the movie.
Which I really dug. No idea what people were complaining about; the only difference between it and the one with the puppy is that Christian Bale can sell stupid shit with conviction, and Jovovich basically just looked good.

Rented Ultraviolet a year ago, and I have to say it didn't impress me too much. It was okay, nothing more as I saw it as a clone of previous movies in a mini-genre I called "warrior-chick" along with the likes of Underworld (Kate Beckinsale), Aeon Flux (Charlize Theron), Bloodrayne (Kristina Loken) and Resident Evil (Jovovich), all of which I thought were good, but not great. However, I'll keep an open mind about this Ultraviolet anime until I actually see it.

I'm surprised that Sony are still putting money into this, especuially since the movie bombed.

Maybe they will let Kurt Wimmer release his cut of the movie on DVD to coincide with this.

It was way better than any of those. He at least knows how to direct action.

The live action movie did not impress me at all, but since Osamu Dezaki & Akio Sugino are working on the animated movie then i am in !! :notworthy:

This is the reverse of Aeon Flux.... Great anime into an "ok" movie...this time an "ok" (I love Milla, but there were issues with the movie) movie into a great anime....

I have recently viewed the movie... I never knew okay with synonymous with total garbage. By the time the cyber ninja's were rolling in at around the 5 minute mark, I had paused the dvd three times to watch something else. It took me a little over 6 hours to finish a 90 minute movie.

I liked Ultraviolet. It was an action movie so I came in with the mindset of having a fun time with lots of violence. Gun Kata was nice and so were the scenes with the motorcycle.

I really liked the movie, especially since I have a movie poster of it up on my wall. To see this put into anime-style, I can't wait to see what they're able to accomplish. Maybe they'll get Milla to reprise her voice. ;)

How about an anime version of Equilibrium instead? Now that was Gun Kata...
