There were many OVAs/Movies that would nice to have in a TV series format (remake/retelling) especially if they are adapted from a manga. What are your top wanted shows that you would like to see a TV series adaption for ?
My top list would be:
3x3 Eyes
One Pound Gospel
Video Girl Ai
Gunsmith Cats
RG Veda
Vampire Hunter D
Gunbuster 1
PS: Gunbuster 1 was actually planned as a 25 tv series at first, the PS2 game do feature the story in a TV series events way.
Of course, i want all of the original seiyuu for these shows to return should they decide to go for them :)
So far my wish came/will come true with:
Ah My Goddess
Golgo 13
Guyver
Mermaid Forset
Legion

Suikoden: Demon Century. I've always wanted to see an expanded version of the OVA. Seriously, there's a lot of potential for a series in this absurb title about the reincarnation of the 108 stars of destiny in modern Japan. If it were made into a series, the Japanese voice cast from the one-shot OVA would have to return. The cast was made up of many prominent voice actors from the 80's and 90's and virtually every single one of them was playing against their type. (The main character, a street fighting country bumpkin is played by Toshihiko Seki. Seki usually plays characters that are more quiet and pensive so it was fun to hear him yell and scream so much. Also, there's Nozomu Sasaki as a cross-dressing piano player and, IIRC, Hideyuki Tanaka as a gun-toting Catholic Priest. Really, how can you lose?)
A series is pretty well out of the question of course but I sure do wish someone would translate the manga. Probably too obscure to by on any western company's radar. I'd also like to see a series for 3X3 Eyes, preferably a late night time-slot deal so the violence wouldn't have to be toned down quite as much. Also, maybe not a series per say but I'd love to see a conclusion animated for Mighty Space Miners. I wanna know what happens!
EDIT: Oh yeah, Elf Princess Rane! I love that Daichi-directed OVA. Hell, if they produced 26 episodes of Ryo Horikawa's character standing perfectly still and talking his unique brand of gibberish, I'd still watch it. EDIT 2: Bastard!! The OVA was good but inconclusive. It also kind of felt like a cliffs notes version of the manga. A full on series would be awesome. Much like 3X3 Eyes though it'd have to air late at night or the integrity of the manga would be comprimised far too much.

Battle Angel
3 x 3 Eyes
Maris the Chojo
One Pound Gospel
Voogies Angels
Dominion
Royal Space Force (sequel series)
Geneshaft
Blue Sonnet
Ace o Nerae
Midnight Eye Goku
Plastic Little
Ghost in the Shell (I want the original Motoko back!)
Kiki's Delivery Service
Here is Greenwood
Video Girl Ai
Armitage III
Mamoru Oshii's live action movies bringing them into the Jin-Roh universe.
Sailor Victory is a part-continuation of Graduation, for which there were 2 OVAs (on LD) made. Marriage (MB) is the conclusion of the quadrilogy.
I'd be happy to have licensed as already made;
Graduation
Sonic Soldier Borgman
Space Adventure Cobra
Ramune
I's Pure
Time Etranger
Isuzu Inugami

Dragon Half. With seven volumes of manga, there's plenty of material.
Tenamonya Voyagers. I mean, come on! :P
Alien 9. At least don't leave us hanging with a horrible next episode teaser!
Galaxy Fraulein Yuna. It would be nice to have a TV series to introduce all the game characters at a reasonable pace. Probably 52 episodes... or so. :catgirl:
Serial Experiments Nobue

Animation Runner Kuromi
I can see this as Daichi self-referential comedy gold.
And count me in for more Alien Nine, too. I don't remember that having a next episode teaser after the last episode though... Elf Princess Rane did, however.

Geneshaft
Wasn't Geneshaft a TV series?
I personally would love:
Gunsmith Cats
Here is Greenwood
Battle Angel (with artwork as awesome as the oav's )
Plastic Little
Fight! Iczer One!
The Great Bear

Alien 9. At least don't leave us hanging with a horrible next episode teaser!
I'd strongly second this.

Another vote for Battle Angel. But this time make an effort with the dub ;)
However much I love the full story in the Nausicaa manga I don't think it would be possible to do justice to the original film by making a series. Put that on the list for 'do not touch' :)

It was more like the background art as the ending theme fades out. It's highly disturbing. (The manga covers what happens) (fwiw, she gets better... more or less.... )

Okay, the three I want the most...
Gunsmith Cats: I loved the OVA. This really would adapt into a good TV series.
Natsuki Crisis: Saw this OVA last year. It was great, except for the fact that it was a two episode adaptaion of a 17 (I think) volume manga series.
Candy Boy: Ughh, the first short was so good. I know they are making more, but I assume they are just more ten-minute shorts.
Magnetic Rose would be an awesome series. It was my favorite of the three in that collection and Kanno even did the music.

Akira
Angel Sanctuary
One Vorlon

Geneshaft
Wasn't Geneshaft a TV series?
You're right - Geneshaft was a tv series. Now, like a lot of 12-13 episode series, Geneshaft feels like material (in this case a "deep space" arc) was cut in order to get it down to only 13 episodes. So it is a bit of a stretch to include Geneshaft in this thread, but not as much as a 26 or 52 episode series (like .hack//sign) would be, and I think most of us have a particular 12-13 episode series we'd like to see more of (mine's Aquarian Age).
As for the original topic, I'm curious to see what a Voices of a Distant Star series would look like. Keeping it popular while maintaining the original feel might prove difficult, but as the Lifetime channel has shown us, its not impossible.
The Pirate Queen
04-11-2008, 06:04 PM
Ace o Nerae
There was a TV series - two, in fact, if I'm remembering correctly.

Oh, I have read the manga (and Emulators) so I know what you're talking about there. Actually, even the opening credit sequence shows events from the manga that never happened in the anime...

My top picks would be:
Tokyo Babylon
RG Veda
Battle Angel
Angel Sanctuary. Such a long manga deserves more than a short OVA.
Queen Emeraldas. I could probably be satisfied if someone licensed the last two episodes of the OVA.
The X movie was once on my wish list and I was very happy to cross that off my list.

Off-hand:
Twin Signal
Outlanders
Moldiver
Phantom Quest Corp
Dragon Half
Green Legend Ran
Hyper Dolls
Gunsmith Cats
And for the sheer comedy value, Kekko Kamen.

Proper Outlanders faithful to the manga would be fantastic. Better dub, the Dark Visions was better than CPM dub for enjoyment to me. Japanese audio has Fumi "Lum" Hirano as Princess Kahm, I'd want Fumi back again for a TV series. Issei Futanata was good as Tetsuo as well.
I've only seen BAA dub by Manga UK. Was the ADV dub better or worse?
Natsuki Crisis OVAs are good tough-woman fighting stuff. Ai Orikasa (Natsuki) v Hiromi Tsuru (Akira, cross-dressed). Her fight with Rina is better, move over Yawara!

I'll second Bastard!!; that would be such a great late-night TV series. They just have to use the actual names of the countries and characters that the OVA changed...
And for my own choice, I'll go with JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. It's the longest manga to never get a TV anime series. Since Part 1 has been done as a movie, the TV should be of Part 2; a Battle Tendency TV series would just be great!

Like a lot of people in here my choice is:
Gunsmith Cats
That would be nice
Angel Sanctuary and Tokyo Babylon springs to mind. I loved the manga, and I'd love to see the OVA adapted into a faithful TV-series. They did it with the X-manga, so...

Dominion Tank Police
Ruin Explorers
Dragon half
Keno's Journey, a full season
Spirit of Wonder

Armitige III
Gunsmith Cats
Vampire Hunter D
Golgo13
Cuty Honey
Video Girl Ai
Whicked City
Bio Hunter
Vampire Wars
Moldiver:D
Phantom Quest Corp

A Tokyo Babylon series to go along with the X TV series would be sooo goood (I have no familiarity with the manga but the OVA was excellent), if they could get Koichi Chigira to direct or Yoshiaki Kawajiri, that would be excellent.
I would also like to see Gunsmith Cats made into a TV series, with fluid animation and detailed art design.
Battle Angel would be excellent, and 3x3 Eyes.

Cuty Honey
Cutey Honey (http://fast.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/manga.php?id=3946) was first animated as a television series (http://fast.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=564).
As for myself: The Adventures of Kotetsu (http://fast.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=100) and Ghost Talker's Daydream (http://fast.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=4359), both of which were far too short.

I'll cast my votes for Gunsmith Cats, easily one of the best "girls with guns" anime I've ever seen, and Video Girl Ai, one of my all-time favorite OVA's that I've loved from the very first time I watched it.

Though it's not on my must have now TV series adaption but Battle Angel will surly be nice to have on a TV series format. I wonder though how many Eps/seasons might be needed to cover the original manga + Last order
I recall reading that ADV was supposed to co-produce a TV series for Makai Tenchu (Ninja Resurrection) but it seems that the project joined BGC 2041 in their Bat Cave archive :sweat1:. Which is sad as that i loved the 2 OVAs and was hoping for a sequel/retelling TV series for it.
Jubei Ninpucho (Ninja Scroll) did get a TV series adaption but it was disappointing to me :depressed: i hope that their next project (movie 2) will live to the expectations.

I thought of another one... how about Rayearth? In the OVA continuity. Now, I know we've got the (very good) TV series that preceded it (Magic Knight Rayearth, of course), but I'd go for a full length adaptation of the 3 episode OVA. Except this time it would have depth and character development. :relief:
I think the characters designs for the OVA are absolutely gorgeous (I prefer them to the TV designs, actually), and Naomi Tamura's ED for the OVA is one of my favorite anime theme songs. The story is just too hollow, and if it were longer it might be so much better since they could actually explain things.
I don't think anyone's mentioned Blue Submarine No. 6 either... That falls in the same category for me. I found the story dull by the time the first episode was concluding; let's see how many ways we can blow stuff up underwater was what it turned into for me. Give the story and characters some development, and maybe I'll give it another shot. ;)

I'd like to add Very Private Lesson (http://fast.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=2592)—with eighteen volumes of manga (http://www.amazon.co.jp/s/ref=nb_ss_gw?__mk_ja_JP=%83J%83%5E%83J%83i&url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-keywords=%8B%B3%89%C8%8F%91%82%C9%82%C8%82%A2%83b% 81I&Go.x=0&Go.y=0&Go=Go), there certainly is enough material.

Please Save My Earth. I don't know why none of Saki Hiwatari's work has ever been animated again, and I find the story drags a bit in the middle, but I'd love to see a full-length series of this that did the whole plot. Make it look beautiful (it doesn't need incredible animation, there's not that much action) and tell the whole story and it'd be fantastic.
I also second the votes for Angel Sanctuary and Tokyo Babylon. Just no more terrible image songs from the latter, please, my eardrums ruptured badly enough last time.
Please Save My Earth.

Aha, I knew there was one more of my favourites that I'd forgotten. A TV-series would be amazing, especially if it was as beautiful as the OVA was in the flash backs. Agreed about the animation as well. If any TV-series could be almost be no animation at all and still get away with it, this is the one. ;)
I'd also love to see more of Here is Greenwood. Of course, part of the reason it's so cute is the animation style, but the humor and wacky dormitory story would probably work today as well.

No mention of A Tree of Palme (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=928) yet?
I love the world concept and energy that Takashi Nakamura (Fantastic Children) invested into this, but it's far too rushed and stilted to be anything good. It was originally proposed as a television series, but was turned down. Wouldn't mind seeing him return to it one day.
I also wouldn't mind if there were a Vampire Hunter D television series, but that would have to be seriously rewritten and deviate a fair deal from the original novels.

Video Girl Ai - I have eternal ambivalence about the work of the mangaka (well the adaptations of it which are all I've seen), they're some of the best of that kind of material I've seen, but I don't really like that kind of material.
RG Veda - I'll put in a vote for this, though I haven't actually seen it it sounds interesting, fantasy story with good character designs.
Vampire Hunter D - *imagines a Yoshiaki Kawajiri directed series about vampires, monsters and the people who fight them... is V intrigued*
Gunbuster - I'd enjoy a TV adaptation of either Gunbuster.
Mermaid Forest - I'm just remembering how much I'd like to see the two OVAs/movies they made based on Rumiko Takahashi's stories about mermaids.
Elf Princess Rane - I have yet to see the OVA but this could be quite fun I think, elves, comedy...
Shinesman - If they got really good staff to work on this maybe it could be Martian Successor Nadesico good, I have yet to see the original OVA (again).

GUNSMITH FREAKING CATS-If there was ever a series that begged "Please! Make me a series!", this is it. Oh sure, the 3-episode 90s OVA is badass... but can you imagine a regular series done by, say, Madhouse? Spike Spiegel himself would weep at the pure badassness of it all.

I heard it's repetitive, I do rather like Urusei Yatsura, but that's because Mamoru Oshii directed the first few seasons and made them good, I'm not a fan of Rumiko Takahashi's work in longer versions, which is why I wanted to see the OVAs/movies.

I loved the OVAs of Mermaid Forest & Scare and for some reasons they still hold a very special place in my memories even after watching the TV series. The 13 Eps TV series is a direct adaption from the manga, which i would highly recommend if you enjoyed the OVAs. It's only 13 Eps of decent quality animation so it can't be that bad ;), and hey Minami Takayama & Kouchi Yamadera reprised their roles again as Mana & Yuta ! That's something you don't get a lot in today's sequels and remakes if you know what i mean

I was waiting for someone to mention PLEASE SAVE MY EARTH here. Glad to see I'm not the only one who would like to see it as a series.
Would also love to see TOKYO BABYLON (love the manga), RG VEDA and FAKE. FAKE is one of my all time favorite mangas and would love to see it done more justice than the OVA. But it would definitely need some better voice casting.

...FAKE. FAKE is one of my all time favorite mangas and would love to see it done more justice than the OVA.
Hmmm, Fake...mention of it makes me go off on a tangent, and think of Earthian - the OVA adaptation, I hear, is AWFUL. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the manga, so it would be great to see the story animated, if for nothing else improved background artwork and the CG effects now available to most shows. Given its overall look and the feeling I get from it though, I could see this being handled by someone like Studio Pierrot quite adequately (a la Twelve Kingdoms?)
Some others already named that I would love to see more of, in a television format:
Gunsmith Cats
Gunnm (Battle Angel Alita)
Makasete Iruka! (Grrl Power!)
