View Full Version : Which Animes Would You Gender-Swap?

And yes, this is in response to the whole gender swapping of Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi phenomenon that's been going around the net lately.
A couple of examples of this:

I gotta admit, I am intrigued with the concept of how would gender role reversals would affect the interactions between characters, particularly Haruhi and Kyon . It made me wonder if many of Haruhi's character traits would be considered totally inappropriate if she was a man. Also, would Kyon be able to handle Haruhi more or less effectively is he was Kyon-ko?
This got me thinking of what other animes would be fairly plausible, but amusing for gender swapping?
For me, I would consider Kyoani's fellow series, Full Metal Panic!, to be able to make the switch. I think a gun-toting girl (Souske) who is protecting a male student (Chidori) with extreme prejudice might work as a series or would make some intriguing fan art.:sdsmiley: Also, I think there would be a different kind of horror if Higurashi no Naku Koro ni was gender changed.
So that's what I have for now. I'm sure there might be other animes that could go under the knife for a sex change operation.:catgirl:

Kyonko is the ultimate tsundere, and Male Haruhi is a Hosaka (Minami-ke) clone, and Itsuki would be the most awesometastic lesbian since Sei Satou. I fail to see a downside to it.
Actually, looking over everything I've seen, it's the only thing where I fail to see a downside to genderswapping... though you could make quite possibly the most refined yaoi series ever if you took on Maria-sama ga Miteru.
Somehow Tsukihime would be interesting... oh wait, they did that already.
Hmm, FMP would of been interesting with the gender roles reversed.

For some reason, the first thing that springs to mind as a gender-swap candidate is Cromartie High School, which would become even more awesomely badass (and slightly creepy and unsettling, given some of the personalities involved) if they were all roaringly hawt girls.
I'd also like to see a gender-swapped version of My-HiME, taking into account the director's comments about wanting to have girls fill the typical guy roles when the series was being conceived. In a way, it'd be kind of like reversing an existing gender-swap.

They actually did this in the last episode of the Cromartie anime, where they redid most of the first episode, but everybody was female. Even Freddie.
One that sort of pops into mind is Genshiken. I'd be interested in seeing a female Harunobu, or a male Saki or Kanako.
I also kind of wonder if I would have a different impression of Monster if there was a gender swap.... =/

Speaking of Type Moon, were you thinking of Fate/Stay Night? If not, that would be a perfect candidate for gender swapping.
Saber and Rin are already more manly than Shirou.

I take it you've never heard of Archerko. She was around long before Kyonko.^^

I have not, but I am not surprised in the least.
I'm sure there must be a line of doujin figures as well (probably at least one garage kit out there).
Well, guys can stop being gar for Archer :P

Kara no Kyokai reference, I presume?
And yes, I highly approve of this genderswap:

Ah! Well, it's still on the list of things to buy, so I'll get to it sooner rather than later. I only ever watched most of it on G4; I started partway and stopped tuning in before it ended, so I never saw the last few episodes.
Are they attractively female? Or just their regular punk selves with sailor suits and bad wigs?

You're probably thinking of Shirouko (which is Shirou's mind placed into a female body), not Archerko, who is in fact the Heroic Spirit version of Illya, not a female Shirou.
Shirouko and Archerko do not share the same relationship and Shirou and Archer.
And as for the subject as a whole, I generally don't find genderswaps that amusing, unless the swapping just makes all the male characters female and leaves the female characters alone...

Kyonko amuses me but other than that, I'm not fond of the genderswapping thing. That episode of Aria DID NOT HAPPEN.

Butt ugly with sailor suits and plenty of wigs. :D
But they aren't becoming badasses, just princesses....

I like the My-HiME ideam that would be pretty cool, My Otome on the other hand would be very weird and a shota-fans dream.

City Hunter :devil::devil: Yes, it appeals to me, the idea of a charismatic, philosophical, sex-hungry, deadly, gun toting adult female perv sweeper, with a conscientious, devoted, inept male sidekick. Also a male police lieutenant whose mother is his senior officer & other gender-swapped CH characters, like the m>f transgender who has a crush on Ryo. And Falcon would have to be like Grace Jones or Halle Berry!
In the meantime, please can some company release Star Ballz on DVD!

Yeah, they pretty much look the same as they usually do, with what Nork22 mentioned.
That occured for most of the last episode, with one last segment back in their regular selves that was adapted from one of the chapters from the manga. In that, Mechazawa breaks at the end of that segment and the series ends like that. When you ever get around to that point, if you want to see the resolution of that, you would have to buy the manga.

I always thought Samurai Champloo would be interesting with mugen and jin as females and foo as a guy.
Same with Hellsing; Alucard, Seras and Integra.

Okay the I wonder what it would be like if Sister Princess was instead Brother Prince, but take it a step further. Instead of younger brothers, they're older brothers. If this thought has scarred and scared several here then it was a success.

But they have to be pretty older brothers. If they look like the cast from Cromartie, that's not allowed.

Brother Prince wouldn't be right if the brothers weren't 170% bishonen. The question remains what do about their younger sister.

I'd be interested in seeing a few episodes of just about any show gender-swapped. I'd be especially interested in the shows where the guys get all the fun and the girls are there for fanservice or damsel in distress roles. I probably would have finished a gender-reversed Gurren Lagann. I've met a couple collectors of male ball-jointed dolls that might appreciate a Rozen Monsieur. Black Lagoon would be a three women, one man team, and how about Mrs. Chang and female Ginji? The twins, of course, would be unaffected.
Much as I like One Piece, Oda disappoints me with his female characters in respect to fighting ability and positions of power. In a world where a skinny cook sans devils fruit power can punt a monster 1000 times his size into outer space and people are made out of all sorts of elements and materials, there's got to be at least one woman who can kick it with the stronger guys. Female Luffy would be damn fun to see.
Zero no Tsukaima...maybe leave the first season alone, but give the second a sudden, unexplained gender swap. Might prevent Saito -> Saiko from being replaced with a stupider ecchi twin, and it would definitely keep Louise -> Louis from becoming exponentially more violent towards Saito -> Saiko...thus avoiding mood spoilers like the end of the last episode.
Last but not least, I heartily approve of Kyonko.

Black Lagoon is already a woman-driven show. Rock's along for the ride. This is much more obvious in The Second Barrage, believe me . ;)
3 shows I would have bought if the male charactersd had been women are; Licensed By Royalty, Get Backers & Cromartie High.
And I really wish Gravitation had been shoujo-ai. :noodle:
You could also do Onegai Teacher, but then you'd get hit with a restraining order..
I keep thinking that Kure-Nai would be interesting if Murasaki was male and Shin was female, but then it would be Moribito.
