View Full Version : Handling two or more series at once...

How well are you at following multiple shows at one time? Do you try to keep at a minimum how much series you can view at once, or are you comfortable at watching several shows at the same time?
Until I finish a DVD of an ongoing release, or finish the series as a whole, I personally limit myself to keeping up with two shows at once (three at the most). I don't really like having to cram too many different shows in a short amount of time, especially when it doesn't give enough room for me "cherish" one series. So in that sense, I don't really mind having a growing backlog. :sweat1:

Truth be told I don't have a set amount of series I'm watching at a given time. The best way to handle multiple series I find is this. Rather than think of it as one series at a time, think of it as one episode at a time. Either way I tend to vary. On one day I may watch 1-4 of the same exact series. On another day, I might watch episode 7 of A, episode 3 of B, episode 9 of C, and episode 2 of D. A lot of it depends on how soon I can watch the next episode and of course how I pace myself with a given series. Plus starting up new series and dropping others does effect things.

I manage a slew of shows at once, but it helps that they are all coming out at different times for the most part, so it's not like I am watching 5 different shows in the same week. But, I can handle two to three a week.

Ah yes that's the other thing to take into consideration. I mean if you're not going to get the next volume of a given series until say June, you can always focus on stuff you do have during May instead.

Two or more?
More like 15-20 in any given week watched weekly along with various series on DVD plus marathoning older shows I didn't get to as they aired.
(Deja vu to your character infatuation thread =P)
Right now I'm following 17 Spring 2008 shows and 1 ongoing (Shugo Chara). I'm also trying to finish already-completed (in Japan) shows slower to be subbed as they trickle through. Most recently Aria the Origination. I'll be finishing Zoku Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei tonight. And I hope, goddamnit I hope, Shion no Ou will finish up soon so I can watch that.

While I do pare it down, it has more to do with limited time, rather than ability to follow. Only watch what I like enough to make time for.
I almost never watch more than one episode at a time, though. They were intended to be watched a serials, and it is a lot easier to justify a 22 minute break from work than it is a 90 minute one.
I'm watching four shows plus Doctor Who; these get spread out across the week as I find the time/as the mood strikes me.

"Two"? I'm trying to comprehend a number that small as applied to anime I'm watching and I just can't do it.
I'm currently collecting seven series, a rather large drop from in the past. But the only one I'm actually watching as it comes out is Lucky Star.
For actually watching anime, I'm typically following ten or so at any given time except in the lull between seasons.

Ah, collecting. I rarely watch what I collect any time soon after collecting it, but I'm currently buying a bunch.
Ongoing = the time period between placing an order for volume 1 and getting the last disc in hand.
Upcoming = Confirmed as licensed but have not ordered the first disc yet (which generally means it hasn't been solicited, or if it has, a TRSI sale for that studio hasn't happened yet.)
I have 21 Ongoing shows. I have at least 1 disc in hand for 15 of them, while 6 I'm waiting on the first disc. The TRSI ones are a bit atypical of course, and Full Moon is almost certainly dead (I should probably switch that to the "In Limbo" category), but there you have it.

*Looks at full post* That's an understatement. For me right now it boils down to the following series right now. Which honestly isn't much, but I'm doing the following. First trying to limit the amount of series I work on at once. Second trying to relegate more series to collection status.
The stuff above the line I have at least one volume of. The stuff below the line I plan to start as soon as I can. In the case of sola it's mainly a matter of hoping things work out a certain way. While in the case of Aria and Marimite, there's kind of no need to wait for a collection given how they're being released. Galaxy Angel S, I'll wait for a sale. Galaxy Angel X, uh it's obvious what I'm waiting for.

There is quite the variety of series, I'm considering in the future. However since they have to compete with each other and I'd rather just focus on what I'm currently working on. Well nothing is set in stone yet in terms if and how a series will be collected. Heck I'm probably over doing it as it is right now.

17 series, I'm currently only watching 14 Spring series and have dropped 6 spring shows. Although that may change to watching 13 series with 7 dropped series soon. Although to be fair there are Spring series I didn't bother trying. So that could be part of it. One can refer to this post (http://www.animeondvd.com/aodvb/showpost.php?p=1306086&postcount=231) to see the full details rather than have me type it out all out again. Also yeah the danger zone series in question would be Itazura na Kiss for the record.
How do I keep up? I dunno... just kinda do.
Clones? Stopping time? Honestly I'm not 100% concerned about keeping up. Sometimes going at my own pace is actually the best way to handle things. As it creates less pressure for me. So long as I make progress it's only a matter of time before I complete series. Granted I may be saying this to justify my excessive re-watching I've done in the past.

Ah yes I kind of forgot about that category. For me it's mainly When They Cry, Rozen Maiden, and I guess you could count sola as well right now.

I'm coming up on the end of Tenchi in Tokyo and about halfway through Rumbling hearts. I usually only watch one episode of each per day. That's how I usually handle multiple shows at once, but I generally don't do it in the first place. I'm mostly a one show at a time type of guy.

This is basically my "in limbo" category, which means unsure it'll be released or waiting for an acceptable, proper release.
Canceled in the middle:
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni
Karin
Rozen Maiden
Licensed but canceled, planned to buy:
Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha
Shakugan no Shana OVAs
Zero no Tsukaima
Waiting on a proper release:
Genshiken OVA
Probably going to need to add to this list... (thanks Viz!):
Full Moon wo Sagashite
Thank god Bandai rescued Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann from being anywhere on this list.

No problems for me with multiple series. This situation isn't unique to anime though. US audiences who follow any tv series (24, Lost, any soap opera, etc.) has to deal with one episode at a time, so any series requires watching multiple shows at a time. J-dramas, C-dramas, and in fact most tv that I've seen overseas also involves long stories spread over multiple episodes, so the normal tv viewer would have to follow different series. I guess for me, it just seems normal.

I have too much free time, so I watch a lot. I try to keep it under 20 :beat:, but then I don't really have any other forms of entertainment that I watch. I usually watch a couple of weekend movies, but I mostly read books. I don't watch anything on TV (since it is all crap). I am a huge entertainment collector though, so I like to buy good TV shows (House, Heroes, etc.)

Ah, collecting. I rarely watch what I collect any time soon after collecting it, but I'm currently buying a bunch.
It's a rarity for myself as well. I only watch as its coming out if its episodic, like School Rumble or Hell Girl. And in the case of the latter, its because its so goddamn repetitive and I want to drag out the viewing.
The TRSI ones are a bit atypical of course, and Full Moon is almost certainly dead (I should probably switch that to the "In Limbo" category), but there you have it.My seven only included what I actually have, thus no MariMite, Aria, or anything else that I don't actually have on hand. I had already put Full Moon on the 'indefinite hiatus/canceled' list next to Kodocha and about seven Geneon titles. I don't think its ever going to be finished in R1.
Currently collecting:
Bleach (only until volume 15)
Hell Girl
Simoun
Shuffle!
Kanon
Lucky Star
Strawberry Panic
As for Upcoming shows, I have 16.Let's see.... (? indicates something I'm not 100% certain on yet)
Ayakashi Ayashi (?)
Gurren Lagann
Code Geass
Gundam 00
Tweeny Witches (hasn't actually arrived yet, so its still an upcoming title.)
Serei no Moribito (?)
Doujin Work
Emma
Maria-sama ga Miteru
Ouran (when Funi finally feels like releasing it)
Sasami Mahou Shoujo Club (likewise)
Claymore
School Rumble 2nd Term + OVA
sola (depending on what BV ultimately decides for its release)
Shigofumi (same)
I think that's it, so.... 15
As for Spring 2008 shows currently airing in Japan that I plan to continue watching for now, this is the order in terms of how much I like them... well, as of May 5th, things might have shuffled a little since then. Here are mine, more or less ranked:
Code Geass R2
Kurenai
Soul Eater
Kyouran Kazoku Nikki
Macross Frontier
Nabari no Ou
Kaiba
The Daughter of Twenty Faces
Zettai Karen Children
Kanokon
To-Love-Ru
Wagaya no Oinari-sama
Amatsuki (I'll probably drop this one)
Plus series continuing from previous seasons:
Bleach
Naruto (though I'm about 30 episodes behind and won't be catching up anytime soon)
Shion no Ou
Mnemosyne (OVA)
Mai Otome S.ifr (OVA)
Shugo Chara (I've only seen the first two episodes but I'm going to continue... maybe tonight?)
Haven' started yet:
Naisho no Tsubomi (OVA)
Candy Boy (ONA)
Tower of Druaga
Total, that comes out to... 13 spring series plus 6 from previous seasons and 3 I haven't started quite yet.
I have a really good memory so I could watch a bazillion shows at once if I wanted to, but I prefer to marathon full series so I can get the full impact of a given show.

Ah, yes, the canceled/indefinite hiatus category:
When They Cry
Black Lagoon
Story of Saiunkoku
Hellsing Ultimate
Rozen Maiden
Kodocha
Full Moon (Screw you, Viz!)
Nanoha
Zero no Tsukaima
Shakugan no Shana OVA
I'm hoping I don't have to add sola and Shigofumi. Though depending on what BV does, it may not make much of a difference.

i prefer to focus on watching one show at a time but sometimes i just need to take a break and experience something different for a little bit. like right now, i can only take so much cuteness at once so i've been alternating discs of Strawberry Marshmallow and Area 88.
