Okay, as you've already seen the poll, you know what's going on here. But as promised, here are the results of Anime Draft 2008:

154 Socratic Island Laputa
150.5 Buster Blader 126
136.5 Azumangaman
133.5 Lumberjack
132.5 Spirit of the Stage
127 Fudce
122 TheFly
106 ancar
103 Proximity
102.5 TnAdct1
100.5 Foxfossil
98.5 Westlo
93 bci110
91.5 AdyHart
91.5 ibby
89 Jack
77 Victor Lewandowski
67.5 PsychoIdiot
67 Ape2020
57 Jimmie M

Congratulations to Laputa for winning the draft! This year was one of the closest in AD history, and it was a good game played by all!

In addition, if you have any suggestions or comments regarding what could have been better or what we can add, please feel free to mention them now. I'll start formulating a list in a few days...

Hmm, sixth place is better than I had originally hoped for in this draft. I'm behind Spirit of the Stage, so local pride goes to the Town of West Bromwich, rather than the City of Birmingham, but I'm happy with where I finished.

I'm happy that two of my characters are on that poll, Sakura and Makoto, and on that poll I voted for Makoto. (Sakura, Eri, and Horo were runners up)

As for feedback? I had fun, but I'd have had more fun if the order was shuffled every two rounds, like is done for the VA Draft. After every even numbered round, a new drafting order is created randomly. It avoids being stuck in a single place the entire draft, especially useful if you are stuck next to somebody who takes forever to make their picks.

Any suggestions as to how? Something like that could be arranged, granted, board keepers might scream. I can use a complete randomizer if I need to for determining draft orders if needbe, but I'd prefer not to do that...

(Oh, and speaking of which, nobody seemed to comment on the round 10 character order. It was actually in reverse of the player order from round 1.)

My vote for this round goes to Sakura Kinomoto - one of my all-time favorites (glad she was able to win Round 1, even if a tie). Kyon, Makoto, and Eri would be close runner-ups.

When I do the VA Draft, I enter the lists into the random.org (www.random.org) list randomiser. I'd prefer randomly shuffled orders rather than static, but organised orders. I can't really think of any way to do it other than randomising the list, since other methods would penalise slow drafters, or be long and drawn out.

For the board keepers, a random order need not be a problem if they number picks. Take a look at the big board (http://www.fudce.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/draft7/) for VA Draft #7, for instance. Immortal1982's first pick is 1.2, second pick in first round. His third pick is 3.11, the eleventh pick in round three, etc...

(Oooh, so it was... funny that!)

Haruhi Suzumiya (Haruhi)
Sakura Kinomoto (CCS)
Kaname Chidori (FMP)
Kyon (Haruhi)
Makoto Sawatari (Kanon)
Eri Sawachika (School Rumble)
Horo (Spice and Wolf)

The best of the bunch, over half the options. Obviously, though, I went with Haruhi.

Haruhi Suzumiya (Haruhi)
Kaname Chidori (FMP)
Kyon (Haruhi)
Urd (Oh! My Goddess)
Makoto Sawatari (Kanon)
Eri Sawachika (School Rumble)
Horo (Spice and Wolf)
Saber (Fate/Stay Night)

Hmm. So many options. But in the end, I'm a Saber fanboy, so I had to vote for her.

That was one heck of a draft class by SIL and we managed to also get many voters who are not playing as well. Now in another award, we should recognize the player with the most creative way of selecting a character and everything.

Really, really hard time choosing between Sakura and Kenshin... but in the end I went with Sakura. Depending on the day, tides, moon in the house of Jupiter, etc, it could have gone to Kenshin.

I think I can safely say this week has been a good week to be from West Bromwich. :)

5th was definitely higher than expected (the guys that did well bar Tohru I didn't expect to be top 5 (Nanoha maybe, but sure as heck not Ogiue or Alice) and yet again, I'm one behind Lumberjack. One of these years...(though I'm toying to do a Victor-esque theme idea for next year)...

The vote? Eri. Hands down. Personally as far as improving the draft, I'm fine with the set-up though due to the change plus no side bar may have brought a few problems. Otherwise, roll on next year.

You just wait next year I might not even make it into the draft with my next theme. I even have a shocker of lead off pick...well not too shocking as this character has been in the draft before.

And curse Jimmie M for picking a hentai character. I tried waiting as long as I could before selecting Minase just so he could be in the same round as anyother hentai character.

I still hadn't decided who my one hentai character would be when you picked Minase so I had to go in a different direction for that round. A re-match between Minase & Reika would be interesting for a later draft, though. Maybe in the Boys or Girls Tourneys...

Congrats to Laputa on winning AD2008! :) Since I have firmly secured last place the sky's the limit for me in next year's draft. :p Despite my finish, I still had a good time with it & will go back to the drawing board for next year's Draft.

My final vote:
Urd (Ah! My Goddess)

Looking forward to the Boys & Girls Tourneys later this year (And hoping to do better in as well ) Thanks to Dunno for keeping us all straight throughout & thanks again to all who voted for Team Bokuto:

Hiroyuki: Sayonara & thanks!
Elle: Back to Kuruda & more training with Gau!
Melissa: Back to work, Souske! Thanks for the support!
Sae (Bowing): Thank you all so much!
Miyuki (At the wheel in Today): Time to pick up Natsumi & go back on patrol. Thanks for your support!
Miyu: Wait for me, dear Yamato-I'll be home soon!
Honey: HONEY FLASH! (Transforms into biker girl) Thanks to all who voted for me!
Nanami: Shin's already headed back to Aslan & he sends his thanks along with mine. Now where's my idiot brother...
Hiroko: Thanks for your support!

Seventh overall, not bad for my first draft. Too bad I dropped a bit in the last few rounds or I could have been in at least the top five. But I picked characters I like rather than thinking solely of their vote-earning potential, and I intend to do exactly the same thing next year. :)

There's really only one choice for me in the Round 11 poll, and that's Haruhi. The only others I even briefly considered are Makoto and Kyon.

This was fun, I hope I can play again next time.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Dunno001 for all the hard work he put in to make such an interesting and fun draft.
Also thank you to all the other Coaches without you people there wouldnt have even been a draft.

Ah so it's down to the final round and only once choice. So let's eliminate people one by one. Kenshin Himura (Kenshin) is eliminated since I have not watched hsi series. Guts (Berserk) is eliminated for the same reason as Kenshin. I only saw enough of Cowboy Bebop to convince myself to watch something else and I never got into her so Faye Valentime (Cowboy Bebop) is eliminated.

Urd (Oh! My Goddess) has a nice body perhaps, but I don't care much for her. Same goes for Rei Ayamani (Evangelion). Thus both are eliminated. Kaname Chidori (FMP) has her moments, but nah..... Sakura Kinomoto (CCS) is unfairly eliminated since I need a refresher course on her. Maybe one day... Sorry, but I don't feel motivated to vote for Saber (Fate/Stay Night) so she goes. Kyon (Haruhi) is definitely one of the better male characters out there, but even so I don't think I'll be voting for him. Haruhi Suzumiya (Haruhi) to be honest I have mixed feelings on her. In some ways she's awesome and in other ways she's kind of full of herself. So I probably won't vote for her either.

Thus we're down to the wire. Eri Sawachika (School Rumble) has the power of twintails and one of the reasons to actually watch School Rumble. Horo (Spice and Wolf) is an awesome wolf-lady and quite the interesting girl. Makoto Sawatari (Kanon) meanwhile has a rather strong story arc in Kanon and makes you feel for her. I've actually been spending quite awhile trying to decide between these three to be honest. All are using the guilt aura on me, darn it.

In the end I've ultimately decide to vote for Horo because she's not just a wolf, she's a Spicy Wolf! Seriously I found her to be a rather interesting character. Plus she's quite attractive. Also her there's the matter of her interaction with the lead male. Apologies to the others, but in the end only one person can be voted for her and ultimately Horo was able to convince me that she deserves that one vote.

I would like to thank all of my well-wishers, and everyone who voted for my team.

Congrats Coach Laputa! You seemed really worried, but honestly, with Pikachu being Sana's competition for round 10 were you really that worried? Since you were so worried, are you surprised by this victory? Anything you'd like to add?

I'm happy and relieved to have won. Finally I can end my story, and end it well.

Haruhi and I were angry that Buster Blader lost on purpose. But on reflection, we realise that Pikachu was probably to him what Setsuna was to us: an essential and dearly loved person who we wanted to be on the team if possible. So we accept the win, because we too were trying to win our way, not go all-out.

As for what happens next, we're not sure. Team Socratic Power might return next year, with a relaxed drafting criteria, and a new story, or possibly the old one continued. If that happens, you might get to see some of our secondary backers. Or we might see a new team. Nagi Homura has been bugging me to create Team Overlords ever since I lost last year. There's also Team Old School, which might compete for the bottom place if it ever went ahead.

Updates to my story will be posted on my blog. At the moment, only the other story-writing coaches can see it. If any of them are interested in writing a unified story end, do get in touch with me, and I'll see if something can be worked out.

To answer your first question, choosing Sana was always going to have been extremely risky. Being someone from an extremely old series, there was a big chance that many people would have simply forgotten her; moved on to liking other people more; or just simply never watched her series.

I would also like to pay tribute to you, Nosredna, for being such a hardworking and patient journalist. I hope you'll return next year, in a timely fashion.

Thank you also, Lumberjack, for maintaining the draft board.

Now some feedback and suggestions.

Rule changes
If dunno ever knows in advance that there will be a material change to the forums, which will or have the potential to affect the Draft, such as a forum changeover, or loss or gain of the sidebar for voting, he will endeavour to tell us in advance as soon as possible.

At the end of the Draft, a record of the final scores will be kept on the same website as the one on which the rules are kept. The scores will not overwrite the record for previous years, but be added to it.
- it should be noted that currently on dunno's Geocities website, there is no record of winners and final scores for years 2004 to 2006

The snaking draft format should be kept. Coaches at the beginning of a Round should be given 24 hours to make a pick, in addition to the 24 hours they previously had to make the end-of-round pick.

If someone stays top in scoring for five rounds or more, they are awarded a Silmarillion Medal - Socratic Island Laputa Meritocratic Medallion
Alternately, someone staying top in scoring for five rounds or more gets a Silsprint Medal, and someone staying top in scoring for ten rounds gets a Silmarillion Medal.

Unless stated otherwise, all stories written by coaches are assumed to follow on from those they have written in previous Drafts.

The Anime Draft should be renamed the Anime and Manga Draft.

Coaches have the final say in deciding the spelling of their team members' names and series.

Unless stated otherwise by the relevant coaches, all series will be listed by their English names on the polls.

Medals should be awarded to the bottom three scorers, if they state at any time during drafting that they are aiming to loose the Draft (i.e. attain bottom position)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Finally, I have a challenge for everyone. Amongst my core supporters, I have an esper, a time traveller and an alien.

Name them.

They will be revealed in next year's Draft.

I agree with this, but only when combined with round order shuffling. I don't mean any offense by this, but I got sick and tired of waiting 36 hours between my picks, when I saw you wandering round the forums doing other stuff. Either shuffle the order, or give the end-person only 24 hours.

With my pick, I'm drafting "That annoying emo kid" from "Neon Genesis Evangelion". And yes, I want his name to be spelled that way.

Unless stated otherwise by the relevant coaches, all series will be listed by their English names on the polls.
what about series with multiple english names?

I also want the round order shuffling put into place for next year too. It makes for better drafting by the coaches knowing that they will have to think more carefully about their picks when they don't know who is going to draft before their next turn comes up until after the shuffle is done. We have already done three VA drafts with the shuffling every two rounds and it's time to bring it into this draft for 2009. :catgirl:

And my vote for the round 11 poll is Haruhi Suzumiya.

Suzumiya Haruhi (Haruhi) - 13 - 18.57%
Kinomoto Sakura (CCS) - 14 - 20.00%

Holy crap, those two ran away with it. Very close between them though, and while Haruhi got my vote, there's never any shame in losing to the lovely, wonderful Kinomoto Sakura.

Truthfully, I REALLY expected Haruhi to take it; I'm more than pleased to see Sakura take the top character vote! Congratulations to Sakura and Fudce for this win! (Even though it doesn't get you anything... :P )

That aside, we are now entering full-feedback mode. The following things have been mentioned (or are being so now) for change suggestions:

-Drafting order
--1. Keep snaking order (present rule)
---a. Time limit on people at ends to be:
----1) 24 hours for BOTH picks
----2) 24+12 for both picks (present rule)
----3) 24 hours for EACH pick
--2. Straight line order
--3. Some random order
--4. Other??

-Number of characters to pick
--1. Only 1 (I am against this, mind you.)
--2. Only 2 (current rules)
--3. No limit to number
--4. Other??

-Renaming to anime/manga draft, to allow manga characters also
--Doing this will rule out any potential of a seperate manga draft, which I do know there have been murmurs for.

We are not voting on anything yet, this is merely suggestions on things to change. In regards to other comments:

-I was not expecting to lose the sidebar. While I had notice that the forums would be switching over, I did not know what would be gained/lost in the move. I can, however, post should I be allowed to about any changes that may affect the polling.
-I should have no problem getting at least 2007 and 2008 final scores up on the page. I might have 2006 on my other computer, but I make no promises to that. Nor do I have the results from 2005 or back anymore.
-Medals are something that can be discussed, but they really don't belong in the rules. I only use the 3 I use now because of how they relate to what people know about them already.
-I am not going to force players to use an continuous ongoing story line. Mind you, players may come and go, some players prefer to use a simple yearly theme, and even still, should we get more interest next year, there's no guarantee that everyone will be able to get a slot to get back into the draft!
-What I can do is make a post once a round ends, of a copy/paste of the round's drafts as entered into my database, for everyone to look over and so that I can fix typos. (I am human, and make mistakes.) Any changes may be requested from that, provided that they are reasonable.
-An icon for the AD winner is something that you'd have to ask Chris about. While AD is a tradition around here, I don't know if he would want to go that far with it...

Anything else, suggestions, etc, please post them. I will lock out submissions at the end of May, and start polling for the new rules/changes in June.

I still think the rounds are too long, given the piddling little number of votes we get. Even with the current overlap thing, we could get the actual voting done quicker.

And you definitely need to speed up the selection process. That took ages :sd: I recommended earlier that you all try to, if possible, find a time to get together in a chatroom or something and knock out the whole drafting order in like half an hour.

I think randomization would be better for the draft as well. Also I think for the 2 pick people, they should get 24 hours straight from the last pick. No resetting the clock.

I still think the rounds are too long, given the piddling little number of votes we get. Even with the current overlap thing, we could get the actual voting done quicker.

I've always kept it to 7 days to try to give more people a chance to vote in them, since some people only come around on the weekends, others only at certain times, etc. I can say that since the move to vBB, there were votes coming in on the last day of the polls in all the rounds. I also worry that if it's too short, it'll basically come down to the players voting, with only a few other people's voices heard. How many days would you propose we make it, though?

And you definitely need to speed up the selection process. That took ages :sd: I recommended earlier that you all try to, if possible, find a time to get together in a chatroom or something and knock out the whole drafting order in like half an hour.

The big problem I see with a chat room format is trying to find the time when you could get 21 people together for a few hours to hammer out the characters. I'm frequently on here at night, which means that people in Europe are in the middle of the night, and over in Japan, it could be the start of the workday. I just don't see that happening feasibly. In addition, going by some of the lists I had for people signing up for AD08, not everyone has a list of characters they can just go down, and they may need some time to think of someone once the list is exhausted. (Do note that a couple of people for round 1 got their 3rd pick.) Furthermore, even shortening the draft time is something I'm averse to, since again, the multiple time zones need to be considered. It's possible that when A makes their pick, B is getting ready for bed. B gets up in the morning, goes to work, and when they come back, it may very well be 18 hours.

So in fairness, I can't get rid of the 24 hour timer. There are other options, though, that can be considered should people choose, and that's a total draft timer. Assign, say, 144 hours (average 16 hours per pick, 6 day total allotment) to each player, and all picks must be made within that limit of on-clock hours. Again, though, I would be very cautious in going too low on that. Of course, the number may need to be different for the ends should we keep snaking drafting. I'm open to other ideas, though.

Okay, folks, these are the last few days for proposing another changes to the rules. If there are no further changes, I'm going to start the voting on them next week. The following are things that will make it to the polls; if there is a different option you want represented, please mention it!

-Drafting order
--1. Keep snaking order (present rule)
---a. Time limit on people at ends to be:
----1) 24 hours for BOTH picks
----2) 24+12 for both picks (present rule)
----3) 24 hours for EACH pick
--2. Straight line order
--3. Some random order

-Drafting timers
--1. Leaving as-is (present rule)
--2. Attempting some sort of chat room / IRC channel for blitz drafting
--3. Initiate a total draft timer?
---a. Time limits to be determined (suggestions needed)

-Round length
--1. 7 days (present rule)
--2. Some shorter length (suggestions needed)

-Number of characters to pick when voting
--1. Only 1 (I am against this, mind you.)
--2. Only 2 (current rules)
--3. No limit to number

-Renaming to anime/manga draft, to allow manga characters also
--Doing this will rule out any potential of a seperate manga draft, which I do know there have been murmurs for.

So... anything else?

What do you mean by "Straight line order"?

and is #3 the idea of a snaking draft with order-shuffling?

Okay, 2 would be the one where it goes 1-20, then 1 picks again, with no snaking. You are right on 3, though, since snaking that means less random seeds... :P

-Number of characters to pick when voting
-- increase the number to pick to three characters

-Renaming to anime/manga draft, to allow manga characters also
-- No.

-Drafting order
--3. Some random order (Order shuffling every two rounds, same as VA Draft)

-Drafting timers

-Round length
--1. 7 days (present rule) *staggered poll starts every 2 days*

-Number of characters to pick when voting
--2. Only 2 (current rules) *maybe increase to 3 or 4*

-Renaming to anime/manga draft, to allow manga characters also
-- No

-Drafting order
--3. Some random order

-Drafting timers
--1. Leaving as-is (present rule)

-Round length
--2. I've found five days works well at getting everyone as long as you start it Tues-Sat.

-Number of characters to pick when voting
--3. No limit to number (making it West coast style with lots of scoring!!)

-Renaming to anime/manga draft, to allow manga characters also
No because manga characters would be at a huge disadvantage since this even happens in the GA forum and not in the Manga forums where most of its fans might only go. Plus its bad enough with all the parallel universes and alt tellings seen in anime.

Just going to comment on this one. I think it would be far better to have a separate draft in the manga forum. Adding a bunch of manga only characters to the mix would just make things more convoluted. That and if the a character has both a manga and anime version which are different enough from each other. That and including manga beings up the question of "What about other things anime is adapted from?" which creates a slippery slope where it's hard to find balance. A separate manga draft and anime draft would make it clear which version we're judging a character based on. That and it seems fairer that more manga related stuff should be use to create activity in the manga forum rather than be used to supplement general anime.
